Chapter Text
If someone were to ask how Wednesday Addams ended up telling her soulmate she loved them, she wouldn’t reply with “A playlist, a soul-sucking device, and singing .”
No, she wouldn’t say that at all. She would instead glare at the offending person, and stalk away -but with a fond expression. (courtesy of Enid, not the enquirer ~ and if said enquirer was a certain Gorgon; then it would just be the glare)
Said soulmate would blush, and change the topic. What happened between Enid Sinclair and Wednesday Addams will forever stay between them, and them only. Oh, and whoever might be reading this :)
Wednesday sat in the family coach, resigned as ever while she tried to ignore her parents swooning over each other.
Although she would bestow third degree chemicals burns upon whoever tried to make her admit it - Nevermore or not, she was looking forward to be ing home again.
She was startled out of her reverie then by a loud buzzing coming from her pocket. Sh e pulled it out, glaring witheringly at the- Yep, the vibrating soul-sucking device.
It seemed to have caught her parents attention, too, and her mother made a vague noise of interest as she glanced at the phone - (and finally away from Wednesday's father, thank the goddesses.).
“Darling, you got one of those-devices- everyone’s talking about! Never thought i’d witness you conforming to such inane social conventions.” Her mother gushed, eyes glinting.
“I’m not conforming.” Wednesday replied in her signature monotone, albeit with a vitriolic edge that would inspire anyone of average intelligence to flee immediately.
“It was presented as a gift. I, however, intend to part with it as soon and violently as psychically possible.”
Gomez's lips pursed - part sympathy, part ruefulness.
“That’s a shame, my little storm cloud. We were thinking of getting one for the family!”
Wednesday sighed, ignoring her father as she tried to figure out what in the realms the device was buzzing for. She finally managed to turn the cursed thing on, and she quickly scanned the little 'bubble' at the bottom of the faintly glowing screen.
She frowned at the foreign phone number. She scanned the 'message' quickly nevertheless, and the heart she never thought she had skipped a beat when she saw the message was from Enid.
*Unknown number*
Hi Wednesday! It's Enid. Xavier gave me ur number. I never thought youd get a phone, im so excited!
Wednesday reserved a moment to absorb this utter escalation of the civility her and her roommate had tentatively fostered.
Both a little afraid that such politeness would stretch too far and too thin.
Then it would snap, leaving more than just silvery moon nail polish lost to the abyss - as their overlapping (and near-painfully domestic) routine slipped from the clockwork tracks ~ and into jarring unfamiliarity.
An absent bzzz drew Wednesday's attention ~ somehow less obnoxious now that it was Enid requesting it.
*Unknown number*
So,,,,, yeah!
lol
how are u? :)
After a moment of furious and thorough thought, the raven made up her mind.
Sure, Wednesday of old would have ignored the “text”, deleted the number, and gone on with her day.
But she’s not old Wednesday anymore - hydes, and convoluted boarding school plots, and ancestral ghostly-inversions and hells forbid, friends - have all altered her, irreversibly. Indelibly.
And all that aside, it's Enid.
The most frustrating, bewildering, and wonderful person she’d ever met- She shut down that thought train immediately.
Wonderful? Wednesday scowled, disgusted at the dripping sentimentality. Maybe she’s coming down with something.
Even so, it's Enid.
So. S opened the phone and pressed on the green app with the bright red dot. She hesitated, before typing out a reply, and hit send.
WA:
Hello, Enid. It is not what I expected, either. Luckily, I do not have a soul so the device can’t take mine.
WA:
In response to your inquiry, I am well. You do realise you saw me just thirty minutes ago, don't you?
She paused for a moment.
Wednesday noticed a little box below Enid's contact offering to "update her contact details" - a little lost and largely irked by such, Wednesday pressed update and hesitated, before sending in another text .
WA:
What does ‘lol’ mean?
Wednesday didn’t have to wait longer then two seconds before a new message pinged in, now neatly labelled with Enid's initials.
The goth blinked, startled at the speed of the response, before shrugging and adding it to the endless list of unexplainable things that is Enid. She allowed a small smile to momentarily grace her face while she thought about her bright, bubbly werewolf. Wait... her werewolf?! She banished all notions of Enid being hers from her brain and focused on the texts.
ES:
Sure sure sure. It makes perfect sense for some1 wthout a soul to keep almost dying to save other ppl 😏😉
ES:
I knowwww its only been like 30 mins… but i miss u already roomie :(
Wednesday felt a little less dead inside (just a little) then usual when Enid said she misses her. She shook it away, telling herself she probably told every one things like that. But that just made her feel... sad... The goth cursed the fact that she, for the first time, cares what so meone thinks of her. She should be above that. Even if that person is Enid.
Wednesday for the trillionth time that day shook off thoughts about Enid and glared back at the soul-sucker.
WA:
Tell any one I have a soul and not even the repelling nature of the ear-bleeding pop ‘music’ you listen to can save you.
(Metaphorical) lightning struck, and then -
ES:
As long as u wear the snood 2 my funeral im happy :)
WA:
Deal.
A beat.
WA: I, in turn, do not rejoice solely in your absence. Predominantly because I do not rejoice, solely.
Which, from Wednesday, is the Enid equivalent of a teary embrace.
The ravenette switched off the phone, feeling an odd sensation of... satisfaction? Not quite, no ~ It was more like, contentedness.
A feeling which for her is usually associated with moonlit cello solos and the comforting solitude of her novel writing time.
And apparently Enid, now... Stars, what's happening to her?
It didn't escape Enid’s notice that Wednesday didn’t deny having a soul.
However, the only thing that Wednesday picked up on from that conversation was that Enid deflected from telling her what “lol” meant.
How suspicious.
She planned to resolve as such later. By holding someone at knifepoint, of course.
Nevertheless, Wednesday most definitely was not intent on parting ways with the soul-sucker now that she has Enid’s number.
For research purposes only, of course. Obviously.
(Science would surely explain why she couldn't help but visualise each one of Enid's reactions as the raven tapped that little blue arrow.
Wednesday bet the blonde's brow was furrowing right now as she typed- new, shiny manicure hindering the process. Maybe her tongue would even stick out as she focused.
Those irrefutable giggles, surely compelled by each new text, the goth could swear echoed in her ears.
Oh, what the seer wouldn't sacrifice (traditionally, bloodily, and oh-so-willingly), to have witnessed her roommate's expression as she declared Wednesday's presence missed, accompanied by "emoticon"; an expressive form already established beloved to her subject??
Well.
Wednesday wasn't actually 100% sure what she wouldn't sacrifice.
But there was no rush for that particular conclusion - she intended to invest in this new development comprehensively and whole-heartless-edly, just like every Addams having achieved anywhere from adequate to proficient, in Wednesday's personal books, would.
(Yes, literal books - detailing all of her family's respectively redeeming & forsaking acts, neatly and chronologically ordered.
- with a special overview index, descending by relative importance.
Featuring acts ranging from; 'unwelcome, inappropriate and undignified joviality' - to 'sloppy attempted murder resulting in abstract personal offence on grounds of the pathetic effort' .)
Of course, Wednesday and her uncle were the only two to reach proficiency status. (Grandmama floats above it all.* Curse her shrivelled heart.)
For those at mortal risk of having found her musings 'too long' and 'didn't read' - Wednesday was hanging on to the soul-sucker. With the cold, dead grip of the eternal army, plagued by rigor mortis.
*Coughs.* For research, of course.
And so it begins...??
