Work Text:
emu ootori has a unique talent. she doesn’t know how she acquired said talent, but it is helpful to her nonetheless.

mafuyu was not the one to set herself up as an intimidating person, yet to emu, there was something so frightening about her. there was something wrong. she couldn’t figure it out just yet, but there was something off. maybe it was how perfect she is, there’s no possible way she could be able to maintain good grades with being class representative, while also having time for her club and free time. or maybe it was her smile. it was a pretty one, yes that was true, but there was something quite weird about it. maybe it was in the eyes, emu couldn't tell, but something was off.
emu has a unique talent; she could tell whether a smile was fake or not easily. an odd knack to have to be frank, but a special one nevertheless. but when it comes to mafuyu, she couldn't tell. it looks so real, but something behind it was telling the opposite. she was going to get to the bottom of this. she would find what made mafuyu’s smile so off putting. she would get her to smile a real, happy smile. that was if it was even fake in the first place.

monday marks the beginning of a new school week, and while every other student was doing nothing in particular during their break, emu has her goal set. and she would achieve it no matter what.
she scours the halls in search of her victim. the previous day she bought a nice chocolate box, because who doesn’t like chocolate? this is sure to make mafuyu smile.
and while walking the halls deep within her thoughts, she found who she was looking for.
through the window, she saw mafuyu buried deep within a book, sitting in a desk of an empty classroom presumably waiting for the end of break. it was the perfect time to give her gift, no one else was there and she would be able to catch that smile all to herself. summoning all the courage she had inside of her, emu throws open the door, forgetting all about her manners. and that surely causes quite the scene, because within seconds, mafuyu's gaze and her smile falls upon emu.
there it was again, that intimidating feeling. Losing all the bravery she had previously gave to herself, emu runs towards the desk, places the box of chocolates down, and runs outside the classroom. how pathetic, how was she supposed to make her classmate smile if she couldn't even do something as simple as giving a box of chocolates. then, the bell rung marking the end of the break. dejected, emu shuffles to her next class.
✧☆✧
the bell rang as mafuyu stares at the box. it wasn't the first time she had received such gifts. but something about this one in particular and the chaos that led to her obtaining such a gift made her chuckle just the smallest bit on the inside.

the end of the school day came quicker than expected, but emu still sat in her seat clearly saddened about what happened hours prior. as she sat in her seat, with her head facing down, she felt a slight touch coming from what could only be a piece of paper.
emu sat up and found a note written to her in the prettiest cursive she's ever seen.
"thank you for your gift -asahina"
maybe it wasn't so bad after all. she'll try again, she'll try however long it takes.
