Work Text:

It was a beautiful day outside. Birds have migrated south, flowers have closed up for the winter...

On days like these, usually the skeleton brothers Sans and Papyrus would have kept themselves busy. Sans normally went out to the local pub, Grillby's, or visited a close friend of his. Papyrus had often went around town running errands, created puzzles in his back yard, or hung out with his best friends. Unfortunately, today was much too cold and icy to go outside. It had snowed approximately 3 feet of snow, and driveways and porches have been coated in ice. For all intents and purposes, most people were snowed in.

This greately bothered Papyrus.

Ever since four in the morning, Papyrus had kept an eye outside on the weather as he preformed chores in his house. He vacuumed the carpet, washed the couch cushions, scrubbed the table, washed the dishes, and threw the couch cushions back in the washer because god, somehow those things never felt clean. He wanted to go outside and shovel, but with how fast it was snowing, it would have been like fighting with a small, white dog in how persistent the snow was in piling up so quickly. He almost went out a few times too, but every time he went to open the door, the heavy winds and fast snow reminded him why he couldn't do outside. When all of the regular chores were done, it was only 7. Papyrus peeked outside, and the snow continued to rage on.

It had been a while since he witnessed a snow storm like this. The last time he did was back when everyone was underground, and they had to deal with magic snow. Which, well, that wasn't all that different compared to regular snow on the surface in hindsight. Maybe he should ask Sans about what the difference is sometime.

Speaking of Sans, he was fast asleep in his own bedroom. While Papyrus usually let him sleep in until 10, currently he was getting a bit antsy without being able to go outside. Many times he approached his bedroom door as his hand hovered the door knob, tempted to wake his older brother up, only to pull away and wander back downstairs. None of his friends were awake before 9 (specifically, Undyne and Alphys especially) so it started to feel like he's been caged into his own home. He paced around in the livingroom and thought about puzzle ideas before he realized he could just sketch the ideas down, but that only occupied him for an hour.

Papyrus checked out the window. It was still snowing hard... in fact, it was hard to see further than two feet from the window. There's no way he would be able to shovel at least the steps at this rate.

He pulled out his phone and checked the time.

8:03 AM

Two hours until he gets to wake up Sans... it's going to be a painful two hours. Perhaps he could challenge the outside weather and try to shovel anyway.

Sans clutched his covers tightly. Despite being a skeleton, he could still feel the tempurature. The air chilled him to the bone (literally) as he wrapped himself in his thin blanket. It wasn't this cold when he went to bed...

No matter how much he tossed and turned, it was really hard to sleep when your tailbone felt frozen. It didn't help he wasn't wearing his jacket, either. He eventually resigned to being awake and kicked off the covers to the floor. Quickly, he picked up his jacket, threw it on, and zipped it. Then, after he wrapped his blanket around himself and pushed his feet into his classic fuzzy slippers, he trudged towards his bedroom door and gently opened it.

Well, there's the problem. The front door was wide open with small piles of snow on the carpet in the doorway. Didn't Papyrus know the blizzard would have made it pointless to even try to shovel?

Sans tiredly dragged his feet down the steps, bed sheet clutched tightly to his body. His toes curled in his footwear as he reached the first floor, now worried for his brother potentially being burried in snow. Wouldn't be the first (or last) time. Tracks of snow were scattered throughout the carpet, presumably left from Papyrus' boots. It painted a clear picture of him running around the house for whatever reason. Sans approached the door, looking outside into what felt like a void of pure white. It was impossible to see any houses from across the street, or even next door. There was a pathway carved into the tall snow, similar to walls in corn mazes. However, snow already started to pile up on the pathway...

He leaned outside and called out for his brother. "hey, papyrus, you out there?" His sheets threatened to free itself from his small hands' clutch and fly into the wind. He knew Papyrus could handle himself, but his brother often threw himself into situations a bit bigger and harder to manage than he realized. He began to step out and commense a one-man search party, when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and looked up, face-to-face with...

"I'M RIGHT HERE!!" Papyrus beamed, with a shovel in his free hand. "THANK GOD YOU'RE FINALLY AWAKE, I WAS RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO DO BY MYSELF."

"were you out there shoveling all morning?" Sans tilted his head. "snow stops at like, noon, doesn't it?"

He waved his gloved hand in dismissal. "OH, I STARTED SHOVELING HALF AN HOUR AGO! I WAS RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO DO."

"isn't undyne up by now?"

"SANS, IT'S ONLY 8:30."

He looked outside into the bright whiteness. "oh." He shuddered from the bitter cold. "well, uh, do you wanna take a break from that?"

Papyrus feigned annoyance and sighed. "OHH, BUT I JUST STARTED GETTING INTO IT! I HAD A RHYTHM AND EVERYTHING!!" He crossed his arms, smile barely hidden on his face. "BUT, IF YOU INSIST, I WILL... 'TAKE A BREAK,' AS MUCH AS IT PAINS ME TO SAY IT."

"aw, it's not that bad!" Sans stepped back and tried to push the door shut. "i mean, now that i'm up, we can uh... huff, hang out?" Unfortunately, the winds were too strong for the weak skeleton as he fought with the door. Thankfully, Papyrus stepped in and helped close it shut with a click thanks to their combined strength.

"THAT'S TRUE!! I CAN MAKE HOT CHOCOLATE AND WE CAN WATCH CHRISTMAS SPECIALS TOGETHER!!" Papyrus leaned the shovel against the door as he dashed into the kitchen.

"yeah, sounds perfect." He made his way over to the TV stand and pulled out its drawer handle. "what one do you want?"

"UMM... HOW ABOUT ANY OF THE STOP-MOTION ONES? I ALWAYS LIKE HOW THEY LOOK."

"sounds good to me."

Notes:

AUUUGHH I HOPE THIS IS OKAYYYY i liked the idea of them fighting boredom off but sans would probably just . sleep through it. and i'm in the middle of a snowstorm right now so the idea of papyrus running out of things to do in the morning because of being trapped inside felt very relatable and fun to write for me

I HOPE IT'S GOOD !!!! i hope you enjoy :]
