Work Text:

If tapping his pen against his forehead helped him write his lyrics any faster, a permanent dent would show on Koga’s head.

Except it doesn’t, as one would logically think, and yet Koga continues to fiddle with the pen in his hand, knocking it against every surface it can find—his thigh, the floor to the practice room, his aforementioned forehead, the list goes on. Which sucked, if Koga was being honest, because the headache that formed after the second hour had passed wasn’t getting any better with the whole ‘trying to knock out your brain cells through physical force’ thing.

But the dusty clock hands on the old practice room clock shows it’s been three whole hours since Koga sat down to work, and he has to resist the urge to scream into the palms of his hands. Soundproof room or not, Koga’s pride will take a hit if he gives in. Which, screaming and letting out his frustrations doesn’t exactly translate into giving up, but it sure as hell does mean admitting to the world that he’s stuck.

If it were a different topic, Koga just knows he would be writing lyrics down at the speed of light. His notebook would be filled to the brim with ideas if it had been centred around any other subject than the one he was assigned. Koga would have been out of the dusty, stupid, still very dusty practice rooms by now. He could be home, lying in bed, napping with a guilt-free conscience had it not been for this very assignment.

Koga has learned the hard way, that life doesn’t go the way he wants it to. And thus, lamenting about writing a love song is what he’s been up to for the excruciating past few hours.

In reality, Koga is not unfamiliar with what love feels like. He loves his dog, more than anything in the world actually. He loves music, his guitar, and the other assorted instruments he’s picked up over the years. He loves chicken, and bells, his family, and dare he even include UNDEAD on the list of things he loves. The grey-haired idol is full of love despite only showing it through growls and threatening barks, and he’s got his own way of showing the genuine stuff.

Admiration is one thing, but devotion to an entire other person… That’s a little different.

“Wan-chan, you’re still working here?”

A familiar voice causes Koga to open his eyes—ones he didn’t even know were shut out of deep thought—and he’s greeted with a slightly too close honey-haired figure peering at him from above. Koga jolts back, just barely missing the mirror behind him, and glares at Kaoru for surprising him like that. Bastard didn’t make a sound when walking in, and judging by the teasing smile tugging on Kaoru’s lips, he just knows it was on purpose.

“Well do I look like I’m here for fun?” Koga replies, discontent and displeasure colouring every bit of his body language. Despite that, Kaoru sits down on the floor next to him, and he swears that the blond’s smile gets just a little larger in time with his own glare hardening. Koga did not invite the elder here, so what the fuck was he doing here?

“Say,” Kaoru starts, and Koga can feel his headache from earlier getting worse as he continues to register Kaoru’s words, “ if you’re still having trouble with the love song, we can do this.”

And Koga, still very displeased with the unannounced arrival of the other, doesn’t know what to expect out of the almost devious looking smiling radiating off Kaoru’s face, when suddenly, Koga’s pen is clacking against the polished floors of the practice room, and the very hand that was holding said pen is intertwined with the honey-haired individual sitting next to him.

Both hands, actually, are now holding onto the elder’s, as Kaoru pulls them closer and up to eye level. It draws Koga’s attention, obviously, so his gaze settling on their hands holding onto each other is a completely normal phenomenon that would happen to practically anyone else.

What is not normal, is the feeling of his cheeks gaining heat, and his heart just barely picking up speed as he absorbs the warmth of Kaoru’s hand into his now-equally warm hands. It’s stupid, it’s horrendous at best, it’s… nice? The palm of his hand slots nicely into Kaoru’s, if Koga is going to be entirely honest to himself—and well, honesty is a virtue Koga would love to lose in this moment if it meant that thoughts akin to the one he just had would disappear along with it.

Koga has to duck his head into his chest in order to tear his eyes away from the scene, and he hears a bubble of laughter come from the person beside him.

“Are you feeling the love now, Koga-kun?” Koga can’t see the face in front of him, but he just knows that Kaoru has one of his stupid smiles on. A part of him wants to look up and stare at it—just because it’s so stupid , he swears—but he fights the urge by biting the inside of his cheek.

“Fuck off.”

Another giggle from Kaoru is heard, and Koga looks up with the final purpose of glaring at the honey-haired idol. His embarrassment is no laughing matter, and yet Kaoru looks elated to be here. Koga can’t share the same sentiment.

“If you really believed that, your hands would have flown off mine the moment I laced them together.” Kaoru’s tone is nothing short of feathery teasing. The knowing glint in other’s eyes doesn't make it better either.

“I’ll do what I want,” Koga grumbles, still annoyed about everything.

The guitarist forces their hands down so they aren’t in his face anymore, but his eyes end up following where their intertwined hands lie in Kaoru’s lap anyway. So what was the point of that? Koga is entranced by the warmth tingling in his heart, and he doesn’t let go of Kaoru’s hands even after the elder gave him a way out.

Instead, Koga studies the emotion simmering in his chest. It’s a little different from the love he typically feels, but there is a healthy mix of unknown feelings and known ones. The familiar pace of his heart picking up in speed accompanies everything in a way Koga wants to put into words.

Well, he could work with that.  (And Koga is sure to curse out the elder once he figures out Kaoru had really helped him with his project. Fuck that guy and just how much Kaoru knows him—Koga is getting back at him for sure .)
