Work Text:
Penny and Ricky sat on the warm grass, basking in the springtime sun.
Penny was lying on her back, her braids sprawled out next to her. She was looking up at the book she was reading.
Ricky was lying on his side, his crutches beside him, staring at Penny as she read the words on the page slowly and surely.
Ricky traced Penny’s features in his mind, noting her wild, curly brown hair and every colorful plastic clip stuck in it. Her braids softly blew in the calm breeze, and as the clips moved with the hair, it was like they were laughing.
Penny’s hazel eyes trembled slightly as they scanned the page back and forth, and her freckles and dimples grinned with promise. Her rainbow painted finger nails tapped the cover of the book lightly.
“Do you want to read another chapter?” Penny asked as she finished, laying the book on her chest and leaving her hands on the grass, palms facing up, fingers curled upward slightly.
Ricky blinked, and entwined his hand in Penny’s open one. He reached for his speaking device.
“Let’s pause for now.”
Penny nodded.
Ricky looked at Penny for another moment, then typed into his device again.
“You look really pretty.”
Penny smiled, her dimple indenting itself more into her cheek. “You look pretty nice yourself.”
Penny rolled onto her side so the two were face-to-face. Penny grasped Ricky’s hand and stroked it with her thumb.
“Penny,” Ricky signed, “did I ever tell you how happy I am that I met you?”
“Aw, shucks…you’re too nice, Rick…” Penny said, blushing.
“Like, really happy,” Ricky continued, scooting closer. “You’re one of the best things that’s happened to me.”
“So are you, Ricky,” Penny replied.
“I love you,” Ricky signed.
“I love you more.”
Ricky cradled Penny’s head in his hands and pulled her in closer to his face, planting a kiss on her lips. And for a moment that seemed eternal, that’s all that mattered—they were together, and close, and they were all they needed.
This was broken by a yell from across the park.
“Ick, get a room!”
It was Ezra, who was sitting on a bench with Mischa not too far from where Ricky and Penny were lying.
“Mind your own beeswax, kid!” Penny fired back, sitting up.
Ezra rolled his eyes.
“Sorry about that,” Penny told Ricky.
“That’s fine,” signed Ricky. “Maybe we should grab some lunch?”
“Yeah, okay!”
