Work Text:
The school hallway was abuzz with talk that afternoon as kids swarmed it as school ended. Violet and Eva seemed to be up to something, and Jamie, ticked off from the events of the night before, stormed over to them.
“Hey, guys!” he said, feigning friendliness. “Still waiting on that apology from you guys for being two ICE-COLD BITCHES last night!”
“Um, cleaning out Cat’s locker?” Violet interrupted. “A little respect?”
Jamie scowled.
Cat’s ghost appeared behind him, surveying the scene.
“Violet Abernathy is such a sad. Little. Poser,” she said. “Jamie, tell her to stop touching my stuff.”
Jamie refused to respond in annoyance.
“Jamie?” Cat repeated. “Jamie! JAMIE!”
“GAH!” he exclaimed. “JUST SHUT UP!”
Violet’s eyebrows flew as she assumed Jamie’s shouts were directed at her. “NO, you shut up! I don’t have to shut up anymore!”
It was then that Violet pulled out Cat’s scrunchie from her locker, holding it high in the air triumphantly.
Eva tensed. “Hey, wait— That scrunchie belongs to Cat…”
Violet seized her power. “Shut up, Eva.”
Eva stepped back, not used to this new version of Violet. “…Sorry, Violet.”
Violet slowly tied her braids together with the scrunchie. “Cat Warner is gone now, so it’s up to me to replace her.”
“Replace Cat?” Jamie echoed. “You have got to be joking.”
Violet turned to Jamie, a smug look on her face. “Listen, I think you need to worry a little bit less about me and a little bit more about your reputation. Elijah and Alex have been telling the whole school about your little threeway in the woods last night.”
“Threeway?” said a voice.
Jamie whipped around to see Mercy walking towards him, a questioning look on her face.
“Violet, what are you talking about?” Jamie said to Violet. “Nothing happened! You saw yourself!”
“Really? Because I seem to remember there was a…”
Silence.
Violet scowled. “Ahem!” she whispered to Elijah and Alex from across the hall.
“Oh, yeah,” said Alex.
“A swordfight in this mouth!” Elijah exclaimed loud for the hallway to hear.
“Wait, wait— He let it happen?!” gasped a girl in the crowd.
“Yeah! A swordfight in his mouth!” Alex echoed.
“Sounds kinda crowded,” Violet added.
Elijah and Alex continued to spin their wild tale on the sensual escapade of the prior night, and soon everyone in the hallway was listening in, adding things and asking questions. Jamie watched the scene in horror.
“Probably wasn’t even the first time, too!” Violet cackled, and the school joined in the laughing as they all slut-shamed the poor boy.
Jamie’s eyes welled up with tears, and he ran the other way as fast as he could.
“Jamie, wait!” Mercy shouted after him, but Jamie kept running.
Mercy felt her bones fill with anger and contempt, and she closed her hand into a fist.
She ran to Elijah and, with all her might, tried to punch him in the face, only to receive a kick to the gut, twat, face, and leg, leaving her on the floor with a bloody nose and some nasty bruises.
This was it.
They were finally going to have to pay.
~
Jamie hugged his knees as he sobbed inside the closet, alone. The door then opened.
Jamie looked up and saw a limping Mercy standing in the doorway, holding her waist.
“Oh my God, Mercy…” Jamie gasped.
Mercy leaned down in front of Jamie and brushed her hair out of her eyes, wiping some blood off of her mouth with her wrist.
Jamie started to panic. “Mercy, are you okay? I’m so sorry, I never should have—”
Mercy put a finger to his lips. “Shh. Listen.“
Mercy scooted up next to Jamie and wrapped her arm around his shoulders, making the tears prick his eyes once more.
“They might have made you cry…” Mercy told him. “But that will end tonight. Jamie, you’re the only thing that’s right about this broken world. You can cry for now, but…in the morning, we’ll burn it all down…and build the world again.
Our love is God.”
Jamie sighed and looked up at Mercy. Her lip and nose were still bleeding, and her mascara was smudged and ruined.
“Are you okay?” Jamie asked again.
“Before I met you, Jamie, I—” Mercy sniffed. “Look at me, now I’m crying, too.”
The two chuckled.
“I was frozen…waiting to be thawed, and then you came along…” Mercy smiled. “And now I’m not alone anymore. And neither are you. Jamie, I promise you, the minute the morning sun cracks a sliver on the horizon, we’ll burn it all. The tears. The pain. We’ll raise our own city, on the empty ground…” Mercy looked at Jamie again.
“Our love is God.”
“Now, here’s our plan…” Mercy started.
~
Elijah’s phone rang in his house. He picked it up passively as he focused on the video game he was playing.
“Hello?” he said.
“Hey, Elijah. It’s Jamie…”
Elijah’s eyebrows flew.
“Who is it?” Alex asked.
Elijah turned off the game and fumbled with his phone, trying to set it to speaker, and dropping it on the floor in the process. The two guys bent down to listen.
“How did you guys know it was always a fantasy of mine to have two guys at once?” Jamie continued.
Elijah blinked, dumbfounded. “Uhhh…lucky…guess?”
“Well, if you want it to come true…” Jamie went on, “meet me at the cemetery. At dawn.”
Click.
Elijah and Alex stared into space for a minute in disbelief.
“Free pussy…” Elijah said.
“…And we don’t even have to buy it a pizza,” Alex finished.
“WHOO!!” “YEAH!” “PUNCH IT IN!”
~
“We can start and finish wars, we’re what killed the dinosaurs.”
“We’re the asteroid that’s overdue!”
“The dinosaurs choked on the dust, they died because God said they must.”
“The new world needed room for me and you.”
“…I worship you,” Mercy said suddenly.
Jamie looked up at her as she cradled Jamie’s face in her hands.
“I’d trade my life for yours,” she said. “They’ll all disappear…and we’ll plant our garden here.
Our love is God.”
Mercy then turned her attention to the gun she was preparing.
“Whoa, is that real?” Jamie asked.
“Of course, but we’re filling it with ‘Ich Luge’ bullets.”
“Ich Luge…?” Jamie echoed.
“My grandad scored them in World War II. They contain this powerful tranquilizer. The Nazis used them to fake their own suicides when the Russians invaded Berlin, and we’re gonna use them to knock Elijah and Alex out long enough to make it look like a suicide pact… Complete with a forged suicide note. If you’d be so kind as to jot it down for me.”
Jamie grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, readying himself.
“Alex and I died because we had to hide our gay forbidden love from a misapproving world.”
Jamie held up the note, and Mercy took it, folding it up and putting it in her pocket. “And when the morning comes, they’ll both be laughingstocks.”
“Let’s go hunt some jocks!”
~
Jamie leaned against a tree in the forest, awaiting the jocks’ arrival. Finally, he heard leaves crunching underneath their footsteps.
Elijah and Alex came around the corner, spotting Jamie.
“Hi…Jamie…” Elijah said slowly.
“So, do we just whip it out or what?” asked Alex.
“Take it slow, Alex,” said Jamie, trying to sound as seductive as he could. “Strip for me.”
Elijah and Alex blushed.
“Okay!” they exclaimed simultaneously, and did as they were told.
“Wait, what about you?” Alex thought to ask.
“Well, I was hoping you could rip my clothes off me, sport.”
Elijah nodded quickly. “Yeah, we can do that!”
“Count of three,” Jamie said. “One…two…”
“Three,” Mercy finished, coming out from behind the tree where she was hiding, shooting Elijah in the chest.
Jamie shot at Alex as well, but missed by quite a bit.
Elijah fell to the ground, lifeless.
“HOLY CRAP!” Alex screamed, and started running the other way.
“Stay there!” Mercy ordered Jamie. “I’ll get him!”
“What…?” Jamie muttered, watching blood spill from Elijah’s wound.
“YOU KILLED MY BEST FRIEND!” shrieked Alex, who was still running, but was now crying as well.
“Elijah? You’re just unconscious, right? Elijah?!” Jamie said, shaking Elijah’s body.
“WHY ARE YOU CHASING ME?!” yelled Alex to Mercy as he tried to climb a fence to escape.
“GET OFF THE FENCE! GET OFF THE DAMN FENCE!” Mercy screamed at him.
“I DON’T UNDERSTAND!” sobbed Alex.
Jamie ran up to Mercy and Alex at the fence, shaking. “Mercy, Elijah’s dead! What did you—”
“We can start and finish wars…we’re what killed the dinosaurs…we’re the asteroid that’s overdue!” Mercy said to Jamie.
“STOP BEING A DICK!” screeched Alex.
“The dinosaurs will turn to dust…”
“WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!”
“They’ll die because we say they must.”
With that, Mercy pulled the trigger and shot Alex dead.
Jamie started to cry. “WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU DONE?!” he screamed.
Mercy dropped the gun on the ground and walked closer to Jamie.
“I worship you.”
Jamie breathed slowly, his legs shaking as he contemplated what he had just seen and done.
“I’d trade my life for yours.”
Mercy wrapped her arms around Jamie, and the two stared into each other’s eyes.
“We’ve made them disappear, we’ll plant our garden here…”
Jamie stared back in horror, and Mercy stared in love and obsession.
“Our love is God.”
“Our love is God…” Jamie echoed, sobbing into Mercy’s coat.
“Our love is God.”
“Our Love is God!”
“Our love is God…”
