Work Text:
Soon after school ends, Wednesday visits Enid in San Francisco. She almost turns doesn't when she hears Enid scream in excitement over the phone. Not that they talk on the phone. Not that they do every night. Because they don’t (they do. Enid insists ). She hates the way Enid’s parents treat her, so they go on a lot of walks. There are so many hills and she loves how cold it gets at night. One walk, when they end up all the way in the headlands across the Golden Gate Bridge, Wednesday catches herself thinking that Enid looks so beautifully vibrant in the fog . The only color she can see is Enid walking in front of her . I like having a friend like Enid.
One night in San Francisco, they start sharing a bed. Wednesday has to make sure Enid is okay (she fell asleep while they were staying up late talking). That night, Wednesday ends up cuddled in Enid’s arms. “You’re a good friend to me,” Wednesday decides. Enid doesn’t hear her. In the morning, Wednesday wakes them up in the morning because she’s startled that she’s in bed with Enid. They both end up having a laugh about it.
Eventually, Wednesday gets fed up with Enid’s mother. To prevent murder, they decide to run away together… by traveling to the Addams family mansion. It’s right before the school year is about to start and they’re going to go show up together. Secretly, they both can’t wait to show up together.
We’re friends, Wednesday thinks, but she doesn’t want to share a bed and cuddle anyone else. We’re friends, Wednesday thinks, but when Enid looks at her she feels like they’re the only people in the world. And nobody else makes her feel that way.
We’re just friends, Enid thinks, but the only attention she really cares about is Wednesday's. We’re just friends, Enid thinks, would Wednesday push her away if she told her how much she loves her?
Sometimes, Enid thinks that maybe Wednesday might love her back in her own way. Wednesday has a look at that she gives Enid and no one else. Maybe Enid is her only friend? But Wednesday always makes sure she has her food and sits down before she sits. If there’s one of anything, Wednesday always gives it to her. But most of all, Wednesday joins the morning ritual of making tea in the morning. She doesn’t make it for her, but asks permission to join in the ritual. It’s the purest joy that Enid knows.
Enid has no doubt that she is head over heels for Wednesday when they almost kiss.
but sometimes when Wednesday runs off after she has an idea and comes back upset, she snaps at Enid. One day, because Enid is already stressed from calling her parents, she cries. As Enid sits on their bed, Wednesday stands and watches her face for a few moments. She fights off her initial reaction to run away, but doesn’t move. So they just stare at each other. Enid notices the moment Wednesday’s glance softens. She wants to stay in that moment forever. Wednesday takes her hands. “I’m sorry. That you still waste your energy on crying.” Enid squeezes Wednesday’s hands. She accepts the apology. Friends don’t tolerate me the way she does? Wednesday thinks, and smiles at Enid. “You don’t have to tolerate me, Enid.”
“I love you, Wednesday.”
The words shock Wednesday so much, she stumbles backward. Enid looks so vulnerable and heartbroken, but it’s too much for her to say it back.
“That’s acceptable.”
Enid can’t look at her anymore. Fuck . Wednesday takes steps forward. She wants to touch End’s face… but she’s scared she’ll become addicted. She unequivocally belongs to Enid Sinclair. As a friend, Wednesday reminds herself, and friends don’t kiss. Wednesday kisses Enid on the cheek. Enid looks up at her and sees Wednesday scared for the first time.
“I’m sorry I cried before. You weren’t being mean. I just-” Enid rambles to fill the space. Wednesday shushes her with her hand.
“Stop. For some idiotic reason you tolerate-” Wednesday stops to think.
“Accept me for who I am. Don’t change yourself, Enid. For anyone,” Wednesday finishes.
It’s two weeks before school starts, and they both never want to be apart after that.
Wednesday gets used to worrying about Enid, but what she’s not used to is worrying about school. “Do they know that you’ve been here?” Wednesday asks out of the blue. It’s sunset and they’re on a walk.
“Who?”
“Them.”
“Is it okay if they do?”
“We’re friends and they know we are roommates.” Wednesday isn’t satisfied with how little she can read Enid, who shares the same sentiment.
“Why do you ask?”
Several moments pass before Wednesday finds the words she’s looking for. “Will things change when we go back?”
Without thinking Enid answers, “I hope so, Willa. No. Uh. Sorry. Wednesday. I hope so, Wednesday.”
Wednesday stops walking. She turns away from Enid. Hiding her face. “Understood.”
Enid doesn’t want to push it, but she touches Wednesday’s arm. “What do you think I mean?”
“You wish to return to our previous situation. Roommates.”
“Look at me,” Enid requests. Wednesday complies, and Enid sees how heartbroken she looks. “Oh, Wednesday,” Enid says as she steps in, pulling her into a hug. “Thank you for being open with me.” Wednesday relaxes into the hug. “Tell me what you’re thinking. If you want.”
Wednesday pulls back, still not catching Enid’s eyes. “I want you to stop being afraid.”
“I’m not scared.”
“You’ve been on devices a lot less since we left Evermore. Stop trying to please me. I want you to do what makes you happy.”
“I lied. I am scared. I only want to be with you. I want to tell you everything and be there for you however you need in your dark, twisty, beautiful way. I want everyone to know that I’m yours and I do care about posting on Instagram even though you hate it and it’s a little possessive but I don’t want you loving anyone else but me. But I understand if that ruins our friendship, and you think that this whole speech was horrible but I want to be your girlfriend. I want everything that means to you.”
“I will hold your hand if you want. And you have my consent forever to touch me when you feel the need,” Wednesday says, stepping closer to Enid.
“We can be girlfriends and I don’t have to ever have to touch you like that, Willa.”
Wednesday leans in close and whispers menacingly in Enid’s ear, “Call me that again.”
Enid can feel the warmth of Wednesday’s breath in the cold air. “I can’t stop, I’m sorry. It’s-“
Wednesday has all the information she needs. “It’s fine, Enid I will behead anyone else who tries.”
Enid nods, “So will I.”
Wednesday runs her hands through Enid’s hair. “Do you want to kiss?”
“All the time.”
“I meant right now.”
Enid nods. Wednesday pulls her in by her hair, and Enid wraps her arms around her waist in return. Their lips meet. The first of many kisses that night.
They spend the rest of the break asking questions back and forth about the details of their new relationship. Enid loves the way Wednesday's brain works.
One night, they have a laugh over being friends who share other beds. Wednesday kisses Enid extra hard when she mentions that Wednesday better not have any friends she shared beds with. It’s moments like that she gets confirmation that Wednesday does want her. Like that.
Sometimes the couple can be found in the library. Enid puts her head on Wednesday’s lap as she reads. Other times, when she feels like it, Wednesday uses Enid’s earphones to listen to music. Sometimes Enid plays with the hem of Wednesday’s shirt. Other times, she takes one of Wednesday’s headphones and listens to music with her.
Wednesday pretends to be annoyed, but she knows Enid only does it to feel closer to her. Sometimes, it feels more intimate than kissing. Other times, Wednesday causes Enid to fall off the couch (lovingly).
We’re girlfriends, Wednesday thinks, and happiness has never felt so good.
