Work Text:

“Yin, a she-wolf, the only feeling she felt towards anyone was hatred or discouragement. A jet black pelt most wolves feared.
Yang was her lover. His aura was positive, changing the mood everywhere he went. They had three pups; Nightshade, Dove and Luna. Classic trio. Nightshade… he was a fighter.
Dove was quite the opposite. But Luna chose another path, a path of magic.
She grew to be a powerful mage. She made several powerful runes, runes that cannot be lent into the wrong paws.” An elderly wolf spoke.

“I’ll get a rune. Just you wait, Elder Underbrush.” A snarky gray she-pup smirked.
“Yeah, you’ll mistake a stone for one, Yoshi.” I said.
She gave me daggers. It was true, she was denser than a Boulder. “Either one of you will be fine, young pups.” He winked at me.
Yoshi laughed and turned away from the den. “Star.” Elder Underbrush took my attention.
I shifted my gaze to the graying wolf. “You have potential. Healer Ethera sees it too. You will find a rune. Believe and you will find it…”
*~*
My paws dug into the ground as I ran. I couldn’t get enough air in each breath. Alpha Rainfall and Aure must have gone mad! Rage tickled my pelt, soon coming to a stop near a flowing river. “Maybe I’ll find my own pack. They all just…” I groaned, stomping my paw into the river, causing a splash.
Looking down, I spot a shiny rainbow-translucent-thing. I scooted it onto the forest floor, away from the water. It had a symbol carved into it. Could it be…? I picked it up, gripped it with my teeth, and ran.
I made it into camp, and ran into Ethera and Burdock’s den. “Star? Do you need something?” A cinnamon-coloured male asked.
I dropped the stone-like object. “I think I found one.” I looked into his yellow eyes.
He inspected my object. “Definitely a rune. But, I have no idea what it controls. I’ve never seen one described as this before. Maybe a high elder would know?”
“What do you mean? You don’t know?” I sighed, still annoyed from the stupidity going on. “Alright. I’ll go to Azalea. Thank you, Burdock.”
“Course. And, try to take it easy, Star.” He said, somewhat worried.
I nodded, making my way into the elder’s den. Popping my head in, I looked around, until I saw a graying white and baby blue she-wolf. “Azalea,” I approached her.
She raised her head up. “Yes, dear? Is something troubling you?” I nodded.
“I found this rune,” I murmured, placing it in front of her. “I was hoping you could identify it.” I raised my head up.
She examined it, bringing it closer into her bed of moss. “How intriguing,” She said.
She looked up at me. “You have heard of the elements, correct? Fire, water, earth, and air?”
“Yes.”
“But most never hear of the runes of shadow and light. The shadow rune formed when the other separated. Luna had her own rune, the rune of light, to keep balance between them. You have found Luna’s rune. The rune of light. Protect it, for this one most of all, should never be held in the wrong paws.” She glared at me as she spoke, not threateningly, but one silently telling me to have caution.
“I have… Luna’s rune? As my own? But that means-” Azalea nodded.
“The war has begun.”
