Work Text:

Ever since Enid had been invited to join the Nightshades, she’s dragged Wednesday to each and every one of their parties. If it were anyone else, Wednesday would immediately refuse. However, she knew that it’d be a lie if she said that she didn’t enjoy Enid’s company. Thus, she attends, only awkwardly lurking about the corners as everyone else engages in their regular social activities.

Wednesday finds herself wholly uninterested in these parties, including the unsuspected friendships and romances that they arouse. For that reason, she usually declines Enid’s invitations to join her in playing along with whatever party games that get brought up.

However, tonight provides a different story.

“I detest. I have no interest in trivial party games,” Wednesday objects after Enid invites her to a game of Spin the Bottle. Her eyes run over each Nightshades member as they remove themselves from their seats and into a small circle on the floor. Meanwhile, Wednesday remains seated, palms clasped together and resting on her lap.

“No pressure, Wednesday!” Enid replies joyfully, “just think about it!”

She does. Silently, she looks off to the side and gnaws onto her inner cheek.

Despite her objection, she found herself on the cold library floor. Before her, an empty glass bottle laid, it’s intentions clear. She resolves to only participate in a few rounds, only to appease Enid, and to perhaps settle some uninvited feelings of her own.

“Who goes first?” Bianca asks, only for Yoko to very quickly grasp the bottle by its body and give it a firm spin with a smirk painted on her face.

The bottle spins, until it slows and points directly at Divina, who certainly doesn’t try to hide her enthusiasm. They both lean across the circle, planting their lips atop each other’s. The air soon fills with the sound of their peers cheering and whooping, as a result of their speculated relationship amongst the student body.

Divina then spins, the bottle choosing Ajax as its next victim. The kiss goes smoothly, however obvious that neither of the two particularly enjoyed the gesture. The bottle then goes to Ajax, who lands on Xavier, of which the two kiss confidently. Another speculated relationship. Rinse and repeat. The game goes on. Xavier and Bianca, which was a bit awkward considering their status as Nevermore’s former power couple. Bianca and Kent, Kent and Yoko, Yoko and Ajax, and then, painstakingly for Wednesday, Ajax and Enid.

Wednesday knows that Enid and Ajax have undoubtedly kissed before, she was no idiot as to what happened in their dorm when she was away. But this was when the two had been dating, and since then they have resolved to stay friends for reasons unbeknownst to the rest. Still, a fury of jealously rages deep in her stomach, and she opts not to watch as the two kiss clumsily. Wednesday always believed the two had no chemistry, and she’d rather not observe perhaps the most uncomfortable kiss of the night.

However, instead of the inevitable kissing noises and giggling from the rest of the Nightshades members that Wednesday expected, there was utter silence. She turns to look over at the event, and can see both Ajax and Enid staring at each other wide-eyed. The both of them look as if they feel the need to vomit, but Wednesday notes the resolve in Enid’s eyes, as if she wants to preserve some sort of secret.

It feels like an eternity as the two lean in, and Wednesday can’t bare to watch any longer. She gives the collar of Enid’s sweater a firm yank, tugging her from Ajax’s grasp and instead into her own.

The action results in Wednesday hauling Enid’s lips onto her own, paying no mind to the incoordination, how their teeth clashed at first and how their noses uncomfortably bumped into each other. They sort themselves out, maintaining a more comfortable position for the remainder of their kiss. The world falls silent around Wednesday as she feels Enid’s lips curl into a smile, her palms holding dearly onto her cheeks. The two pay no attention to the surrounding reactions: gasps, laughter, cheers, and a myriad of “i knew it!”s and “called it!”s.

“Go Wednesday!” Xavier shouts, but Wednesday hardly hears him.

Reality smacks Wednesday hard as she pulls away from Enid’s lips. She looks about the circle, looking at everyone’s dumbfounded faces. A specific warmth fills her cheeks, similar to the feeling she had the first time she kissed Tyler, before the vision and fear that ensued afterward. However, it was a blatant fact she enjoyed this kiss much more.

She stands. “I’ll be taking my leave now,” she says monotonously as she collects her belongings.

“Um, me too!” Enid barely sputters out, jumping up to meet with Wednesday.

“See ya, lovebirds,” Yoko, who was now sitting with Divina, chuckles.

“Have fun you two,” Kent adds, “do-“

“The offer of a matching black eye still
stands,” Wednesday spits before exiting. Surely enough, this silences him. Though, before the door completely closes the door, she can hear everyone gawking about what an impressive display she gave them all.

Enid clings to Wednesday’s arm, most of the walk back to Ophelia Hall tense and quiet.

Unsurprisingly to Wednesday, Enid is the one to break the silence.

“Why did you do that?” Enid asks, and Wednesday mistakes her curiosity for disappointment. It was one of the very few moments in her life in which she felt her heart sink.

“You looked uncomfortable, I figured I should get you out of that situation.”

“Oh,” Enid’s voice falters, her face falling, “is that all it was?”

“I’m not sure what you’re getting at.”

There’s another brief instance of awkward silence as Enid musters up whatever courage she has.

“It just… I just…” Enid struggles to find her words, “I’ve had feelings for you since the first time you stepped into my dorm, and, for a minute there, that kiss really made it seem like you felt the same.” The harsh lump in her throat and the tears pricking at her eyes don’t stop her from squeezing onto Wednesday’s arm even tighter. “I’ve thrown so many hints your way, but I always figured you’d never feel the same.”

“Enid,” Wednesday responds almost immediately, “look at me.”

There’s a moment of hesitance before Enid releases her grasp from Wednesday’s arm, quivering eyes looking straight into the other’s.

“I wasn’t aware you felt that way about me.”

“Obviously,” Enid retorts, but theres a chuckle behind her words, “you’re so bad with feelings.”

“I’m well aware, but I’m sure about the kind that I have for you.”

“What do you mean…?”

“I’d like to kiss you again,” Wednesday admits, “properly, this time.”

Enid doesn’t answer, but instead pulls Wednesday into another kiss, and Wednesday begins to understand her parent’s affection.
