Notes on Inter-Office Dating (Or, What To Do When Your Secret Relationship Goes Semi-Viral)

Summary:

To: [email protected]
From: [email protected]
Subject: FWD: FWD: Officer Conduct Complaint

Sergeant Grey,

Here’s that civilian complaint I mentioned earlier. As Officer Hunter mentioned, I don’t think it’s really worth launching a formal investigation. It seems as though this Karen might be an actual “Karen.” Lucy really was having a bad day, which we both know doesn’t happen too often, and Tim was only trying to help. That’s the way I see it, anyway.

However, if you’d like to talk to Sergeant Bradford about the incident, just let me know the time and I’ll get the conference room ready.

Best,

Officer John Nolan

Notes:

My silly little take on how #ChenfordSecretDatingEra gets exposed. Seriously, this is so so silly.

All credit goes to ABC, The Rookie, Alexi Hawley, and Melissa O'Neil's butt in jeans. I did a minimal amount of research on how to lodge complaints against police officers, and mostly made everything up for the purposes of storytelling.

No beta, we die like Jackson West.

To Whom It May Concern,

I have been a resident of Los Angeles for over twenty years and have been an avid supporter of the police. I have even donated in the past, because I know the work officers do is important. However, I cannot stay silent about the egregious abuse of power I witnessed today. I saw a form on your website for such complaints, but I prefer to email you about the incident instead.

This morning (March 2nd), I was waiting in line at a coffee shop on Santa Monica Boulevard. The line was very long, as you can imagine, and I had to wait TWENTY MINUTES before arriving at the front of the line. Just as I was about to, a uniformed officer came in, SKIPPED THE WHOLE LINE, and ordered a donut. (A bear claw, to be specific, which is VERY POPULAR at this location.) When I asked why he was skipping the line, which I have the right to do as a TAX PAYING CITIZEN, he said his “girlfriend was very upset” and that he would “be in a lot of trouble if he didn’t get her her breakfast.”

And then he just left!!!!

Well, when I followed him to get the police car number, I saw that he handed the donut to what appeared to be his female partner!!! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!! Either he lied about the reason as to why he skipped the line, which is a blatant abuse of power, or he is ACTUALLY dating a fellow police officer, which is clearly a conflict of interest. His name was Officer Bradford, I believe.

If you do not look into this matter, I will have NO CHOICE but to contact the media. I will wait for your response.

God Bless,

Karen O’Neil

Thank you, Officer Torres, for making us aware. I’m forwarding this to Officer Nolan, Sergeant Bradford’s union rep.

John, take a look here and let us know how you’d like to proceed. I don’t think it’s a big enough offense to kick up to Internal Affairs, but I would check with Sergeant Grey.

Thanks!

Subject: Civilian Complaint Follow Up

Officer Bradford,

Thank you for your patience as we investigated LAPD resident Karen O’Neil’s complaint, lodged on March 2nd, 2022, against you. To recap, Mrs. O’Neil alleged that you abused your power of the badge to skip the line at Mama Joe’s Coffee and Bakery, as well as alleging that you are dating your fellow officer and subordinate, Officer Lucy Chen.

As we discussed in our last meeting, we did not find these claims to be truthful, nor warranting any suspension or further action at this time. We believe that, while perhaps misguided, you did not abuse your power during this incident.

We are also choosing to believe that you and Officer Chen are not, in fact, dating. As stated, should this not be the case, please fill out the form and have it reviewed and signed by Sergeant Grey before bringing it to our office. We will need Officer Chen to fill out a separate form, which is attached here. We will go over the next steps and subsequent investigation at that point. Please be aware that regardless of your relationship status, we have advised that you two not ride together for a minimum of two months.

I am attaching a copy for the case file, which has been forwarded to both Officer Nolan and Sergeant Grey. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Officer Tammy Collins
Office of Internal Affairs, LAPD

Next time remember to use your personal account, dummy. Just like you should remember that we got off insanely easy, all things considered.

Can’t wait for tonight. Maybe we should discuss disclosing. I know you said you didn't want to jeopardize our relationship bubble and my career and blah blah blah, but I'm thinking we might not have a choice? Lying to Grey doesn't feel good.

Anyway, we'll talk over dinner.

Love you. Xx

So, when were you going to tell me you cheated on me with Tim? Or was I just going to have to see it on Twitter?
Damn. I always knew it was him.
Bitch.

This user is not in your contacts.

Lucy Chen

Totally hypothetical question incoming

Angela Lopez

No, it’s technically not illegal to date a superior officer.
You’ll be separated once you disclose probably.
Wesley says you can’t be sued, though. So that’s a good thing right?
Tell Timothy I hear Burbank is nice.

Lucy Chen

It’s so scary when you do that

Subject: Disclosing Form

Officers Bradford and Chen,

Thank you for filling out your respective forms. Pending Sergeant Grey’s approval, these will be sent to Internal Affairs for review. As your union rep, I will be accompanying you to all future meetings during the time of the investigation. As I understand it (this is my first Relationship Disclosure Form), you will both be placed on a paid suspension while they determine if your relationship has ever, or will ever, affect any cases you worked together. And possibly separately.

Anyway, I wouldn’t worry. Once they ensure you both acted professionally while working, Sergeant Bradford will be transferred to another division, per his request. Officer Chen will continue to work with the Mid-Wilshire Division.

I’ll follow up soon re: next steps.

Best,

Officer John Nolan
Mid-Wilshire Division

P.S. Can I just say that I am so happy for you guys???!! We’ll have to have you two over for dinner sometime. Bailey makes a mean lasagna. :-)
