Robin has his headphones on, his hangs shoved in his pockets and is walking to school. He normally takes the long way to school, so he avoids one person. Robin doesn’t mind though, he enjoys walking, it helps him clear his head and he enjoys listening to music.
“Robin!” Robin smiles at himself because he knows who’s voice that is, the other win for taking the long way is that he always runs into his friend Finney and his sister Gwen.
Robin takes off his beats and places them on his neck where somehow they stay in place. “Hey Finn” Robin says ruffling his friend hair and turns to the girl next to him “Gwen”
“Robin” Gwen walks in the middle of the two friends and takes Robin’s headphones, putting them on. “Spanish music, like always” Gwen rolls her eyes playfully but still keeps the headphones on her head.
Robin smiles at her and moves her to the side so he’s walking next to Finney.
“Have you been studying for the Precal exam?” Finney says smiling at his friend.
”Shit, I haven’t been studying”.
Finney rolls his eyes at Robin, “of course, well lucky for you Im a great friend and I’m inviting you to one of my study nights with Billy and Griffin.” Finney smiles at Robin.
”What? I don’t want to go to one of your nerd nights”
“Oh come on Robin, you know you need to pass this exam”
Robin sighs, it’s true, he currently has a 72 in his Pre Cal class and if he fails this exam he would have a failing grade. But does Robin want to spend time with Finney and his nerd friends during a nerd night? No he doesn’t, he likes them sure but he once joined one of their nerd nights at Billy’s house and they take their studying seriously, way too seriously. But Robin needs this to pass this exam which is next week on Tuesday.
“Fine”.
Finney completely lights up, “Omg, you won’t regret it” he says with a huge smiles as he gives his friend a hug.
”I’m already regretting it” Robin says rolling his eyes but hugging Finney back.
Finney and Robin became friends during Freshman year, they both had geometry together, they were paired in a partner project and after that they started talking. Finney always helps him with math, and Robin is so happy about it. Now in their Junior year, Robin always asks for Finneys help since their math classes have become even more difficult.
Robin and Finney kept having conversations while Gwen walked next to them still listening to Robin’s music until they reached the school and he handed the headphones back and walked to class.
”Finney, where’s the nerd night going to be?”
”Oh! At Griffins house, I’ll send you the address during lunch and I’ll tell them about you coming”
“Will they be okay with me being there?”
Finney gave Robin a look, “Of course, they like you Robin, even when Griffin is a dick, they won’t mind you joining”
”Is Bruce going to be there?”
Bruce is one of Finneys teammates in baseball, he talks to Robin during their science class and he knows that sometimes Bruce joins their nerd nights before exams.
”No not today, it’s his dads birthday so he’s spending it with his family”
”Great, then I’ll be with you guys”
”Oh come on Robin, we aren’t that bad” Finneys says playfully pushing Robin as they walk to their first class.
”You guys take your nerd nights way to seriously”
After classes Robin makes his way out of the school, he looks at his phone and notices that his mom texted him asking him to go to the store to pick up a couple of things she needs for dinner. He spots Finney, Griffin and Billy waiting for him by the gate and who walks to them.
”Hey guys” Robin says as soon as he’s close enough.
”Hi Robin!” Finney smiled at him.
”Hi!, I’m glad you’ll be joining us!”
“Yes very excited, let’s get this “nerd night” started” Griffin air quotes “nerd night”.
Robin just rolls his eyes, “My mom texted me, I have to pick up a couple of things from the store and take them to her, I’ll be there in like 45 mins” Robin explains.
”That’s fine”
“Yeah, I’ll send you my address.”
Robin waves off Griffin, “Finney already sent it to me, don’t worry about it man”
”Alrighty”
”Do you guys want any snack?, I can pick something up.”
”Oh!, yes please, can you get me some Sour Patch Kids” says Billy.
”I would also like some candy”.
”A bag of chips would be nice too, so we can share”
”Yes, yes”
“Okay guys, I’ll see y’all in a bit then”. And with that Robin waved at the three boys as he headed to the store.
After Robin bought all the things his mom sent him and the snacks for his friends, he made his way to his house.
When he entered his house he was met with the smell of spices. “Mami, I’m home!”
”Hola cariño, did you buy the things?”
“Si” Robin replies as he takes out the snacks from the bags and hands them to his mom.
”Gracias mijo, vas a un lado?” She asks as she eyes the snacks.
”Yeah, voy con Finney y sus amigos”
“Okay mijo, be careful” His mom says as she walks up to him and gives him a kiss on the forehead”
“I always am, bye mami!” Robin gives his mom a huge smile before walking out the door.
”Bye Mijo!” He hears before he closes the door.
Before Robin can start making his way to Griffins house, he takes out his headphones, puts them on and starts listening to some Spanish music as he puts the location on his phone and starts walking.
He hums to the songs as he looks around and can’t help the fact that he feels deja vu.
The three boys made it to Griffins house and got straight to studying. They took their study nights seriously because they all knew if they didn’t then none of them would get anything done. They really wanted to pass that exam on Monday.
Time went by so fast, after a while they heard loud voices screaming at each other.
Griffin sighs in realization, Vance.
”I wonder who Vance is screaming at now”.
Finney looks up at Griffin and then remembers something.
”Hey Robin?”
”Yeah?”
”Why do you take the long way to school?”
Robin looks over to Finney before answering,”why do you ask?”
”Well I noticed that it started like in the middle of last year, I’m just curious.”
Robin breaks eye contact as he looks up at the sky,”Trying to avoid someone”
Finney nods and also looks up at the sky before talking. “I’m not trying to be noisy but is it Vance?” That makes Robin stop and look at Finney. Finney realizes and stops walking and looks at Robin. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, I’m just curious”
Robin just sighs and starts walking again, “Yeah, we don’t exactly get along anymore”
Finney nods again and follows after Robin, dropping the subject. He knew the two boys were friends for so long and last year, in the middle of 8th grade they both stopped talking completely and Robin started taking a different route to school.
Finney blinks.
“Yeah, we don’t exactly get along anymore”
“Robin” That’s the only word Finney let’s out before getting up and walking out the room, the other two following. How could he forget to tell Robin, this was also Vance’s house. Griffin moved in with Vance after Vance’s mom and his dad got together.
Once he was out of the room he could hear the voices who in fact belonged to Robin and Vance.
Five minutes before.
Robin kept looking around, this direction was leading him to the one house he’s been avoided. He was hoping that it wasn’t that house, he was hoping Griffin just lived right next to Vance. He should know better. He stops when his phone tells him to stop.
Robin looks to the right at the house that he hasn’t entered since 8th grade, the house that holds to many memories.
He turned and looked in front of him to find a person he hasn’t talked to since 8th grade as well.
“What the fuck are you doing here Arellano?” Vance says after they starred at each other with wide eyes.
Robin would also like to know.
“I don’t know, my phone brought me here” Robin says pointing at his phone.
”Your phone?”
”Yes my phone” Robin says rolling his eyes, “Does Griffin live with you or something?” Robin asks.
Vance’s annoyed and angry look switched to a confused look. “Why are you trying to see Griffin?”
”Finney fucking invited me to one of their nerd nights to study”
”What the fuck?, since when are you friends with Griffin?”
” I don’t fucking know, now if you don’t mind I’ll be going to story with my nerds”
Before Robin could make his way toward the house, Vance walked over and stopped right in front of the gate “I don’t want you no where near my house, and stop talking to Griffin” he says with a glare.
Robin scoffs, “You can’t tell me what to do, I won’t even bother you, just let me fucking go”
“No”
“No?”
And before the two boys could continue arguing, the front door opened showing Finney, with Griffin and Billy right behind him, looking rather confused.
”Vance why the fuck are you screaming at Robin?” Griffin asks, confusion showing all over his face.
”Since when are you friends with him”
”I’m not sure, why aren’t you letting him in?”
”because I don’t fucking like him”
“Well I do so just let him in, he literally won’t bother you”
”I don’t care, I don’t want him in my house”
”Our house” Griffin corrects as the two boys kept arguing.
Robin ended up losing his patience.
”it doesn’t fucking matter, I’ll just go” Robin says and it brings all boys attention back to him.
”Robin, don’t worry about it, Vance is just being a huge asshole”
“It’s fine, we can have a nerd night at my house tomorrow or whatever” Robin says walking away towards his house.
”Robin!” Finney called out.
”It’s fine Finn, Robin says not turning around or stopping, “Ill text you”.
Robin couldn’t believe this, he talked to Vance, his best friend since he was a kid, his first crush and probably still us crush.
”Yeah walk away from your problems Robin Arellano, like you always fucking do!” Yelled Vance after him.
That made Robin stop dead at his tracks.
He heard Griffin screaming at Vance about his logic, but he couldn’t understand anything, all the anger started flowing. He turned around and walked right up to Vance, all close and personal.
”Tu eres un pendejo Vance Hopper!” Robin yells really loud. “You fucking walked out of my life, you stopped texting me, stopped calling me, stopped showing up so don’t come at me for walking away from my problems when that’s the only thing your fucking good at!”
Vances face also starts showing anger as he scoffs. “Yeah but you started acting fucking weird first, you started ignoring me and avoiding me, what the fuck was I supposed to do? Beg?, you started leaving my life, I wasn’t going to close to someone who wasn’t making a fucking effort!”
”And why didn’t you ask huh?, I would of fucking told you what was happening but your first fucking instinct was to walk away from me”
”I fucking thought that you saw what everyone else in my life saw, how fucking horrible I was, I was fucking scared but I didn’t want to fucking force you to be in my life if you didn’t want to”
”I did want to be in your fucking life but I was ducking confused with my self, I was confused about everything and I didn’t want to push you away, I didn’t even notice I started avoiding you it just started happening”
”Well that’s not my fucking problem, it’s been fucking years since we’ve talked and now we are talking”
”Yes now we’re talking after I showed up to your house to have a fucking study session with Griffin”
”Why did you start avoiding me?” Vance says after a couple of seconds, his loud voice was gone it even sounded like he hesitated.
”Fuck, because I fucking liked you and I might still fucking like you I don’t really know” Robin says with anger as he throws his hands around.
Vance’s eyes widen and before Robin can even question why Vance was getting closer to him, he feels Vance’s lips on his. He feels his whole body freeze before kissing back, he feels Vance’s hands grab him at his waist and pull him closer and Robins hands go up to Vances curly hair.
After breaking the kiss Vance just stares at Robin before talking.
”Fuck Robin, the main reason why I walked out of your life was because I fucking liked you, I was scared you were going to walk out so I fucking left first so I wouldn’t be more hurt about it”
Robins eyes widen in realization, they both turned away from each other because of their feelings.
Robin drops his head on Vance’s shoulder and hugs him. Vance tenses up but hugs him as well.
“What the fuck just happened” They hear Billy say.
That makes them pull apart from each other and look at the three boys who look very shocked at the scene in front of them.
”So your telling me you guys are both gay and found out you had feelings for each other and pushed each other away” Griffin says still looking pretty confused.
”It sounds like it” Finney says.
”If any of you guys tell someone about this, you will fucking die”
”Great now I was threatened, I just wanted to study man”
“Bro for reals, I felt like I just watched one of those Kdramas Bruce loves to watch”
The three boys keep talking as they head back inside.
Both Robin and Vance look at each other before smiling.
Robin goes back where he left the snacks and walks right past Vance as he walks to the house.
”You should join us for nerd night”
“Yeah that’s not fucking happening” Vance replies rolling his eyes.
Robin just laughs and heads inside, making sure everything actually happened by turning and giving Vance a quick kiss on the check before winking at Vance and walking to Griffins room.
Robin realizes everything did happen since Vances cheeks were turned bright red as he turned and walked to the kitchen.
Maybe nerd nights weren’t that bad, he’s glad he didn’t walk away this time.
