Work Text:
There were many cases in Fuyumi’s childhood home where it seemed as though there was never enough food given to her or her siblings. Touya especially often didn’t get enough food for the intense training he was forced to do.
Fuyumi had grown very used to sneaking around the house and making her presence barely noticeable to avoid interacting with her father as much as possible. When she woke up early, she snuck out to the kitchen, relieved that it was empty. She plugged in the rice maker and made rice, then grabbed tuna, mayo, and soy sauce for the filling. She put the ingredients in a bowl and mixed them together. She heard footsteps and stopped what she was doing, listening. To her relief, it was just Natsuo. He came into the kitchen, nodded slightly at her, and grabbed breakfast quickly before leaving.
Fuyumi put the filling in the rice and shaped it into a triangle, making a few onigiri before slipping them into the back of the fridge, covered with a towel.
That night, after dinner and Touya finished his training, Fuyumi snuck over to his room, tapping lightly on the door before opening it. Her brother was sitting in the dark holding an ice pack to a bruise. He looked up when she came in, tense body relaxing slightly. Fuyumi sat down next to him, handing him the onigiri.
“It’s tuna mayo flavor,” she whispered. Touya gave her a grateful smile before biting into the rice ball. Fuyumi chewed on her lip as she sat next to him, holding the ice pack for him.
“Thank you,” Touya said when he finished the onigiri. Fuyumi smiled at him before taking the plate back to the kitchen.
It was finals week for Natsuo. Fuyumi knew that college was tough–she was also going through it. For someone like him who was going into the medical field, though, it was even worse. He had sounded really stressed when they had called last night, and had hung up early with an apology and an explanation that he really needed to study. Fuyumi knew that it would probably take some of the stress off of her brother if he didn’t have to cook for himself, so she resolved to pack him a bento.
Fuyumi made hambagu, a savory hamburger steak made of ground beef and pork with a soy and dashi sauce. She put rice, asparagus with miso sauce, sliced tamagoyaki omelette, and fruit in the bento. She also took the time to make chocolate mushi-pan, a small steamed cake. Sweets were rarely, if ever, allowed in the Todoroki household growing up, so she knew he would like the small act of rebellion, and he had discovered that he had a sweet tooth.
Fuyumi drove to Natsuo’s apartment with the food, knocking on the door. When her brother opened the door, he had dark bags under his eyes and his hair was messy. There was a pencil tucked over his ear. Fuyumi handed him the food, wished him luck on his finals, told him to sleep, and returned home.
Shouto didn’t often eat breakfast before school. Fuyumi made sure that he would at least take a few protein bars with him to eat on the train. Today, however, she woke up early to cook for him. She mixed up eggs and cut tomatoes. She stir fried the eggs and tomatoes, then put them over steamed rice. She set the dish on the table and went to wake up Shouto.
“Shouto? I made you breakfast, come eat it.” Her brother made a noise of affirmation from inside his room.
When Fuyumi had last visited her mother in the hospital, she had realized that hospital food was notoriously bad, and resolved to cook for her mother. She had spoken with the doctor, who had approved it, and now she was cooking.
Fuyumi decided to make unadon, an eel rice bowl. She grilled eel with a sweet soy sauce, and steamed rice to put it over. Then, she made the journey to the hospital to give the dish to her mother.
The whole family was finally reunited. Endeavor was in jail, and Touya was no longer a villain, and was getting therapy and reformation. Rei was out of the hospital and back with her children. Everything was new and recent, and it would take adapting, but everyone was pleased with the outcome. Today, Fuyumi was out going to a museum, and the remaining family decided to cook a meal for her for when she returned.
“I’m not too good at complicated dishes, but I can do simple things,” Natsuo offered.
“I’ve been learning from some of my classmates,” Shouto said.
“I’m not very good at cooking. I can probably make rice?” Touya phrased it like a question.
“Well, I haven’t cooked in a while, but I’m sure we can make do,” Rei said. “Touya, you can make rice, please? Natsuo, you make miso soup, okay? Shouto, please make edamame. I’ll make beef curry and mushroom salad.” The group split up to do their separate tasks. Touya’s job mostly just consisted of putting rice and water in the rice cooker, so when he finished, he ran errands for the others. Rei asked him to get pickled daikon radishes from the pantry. He fetched various ingredients.
“Touya, you’re good with a knife, right?” Rei asked.
“That feels like some sort of jab,” he muttered.
“Could you cut the vegetables and beef for the curry for me?”
“Sure.” He moved next to his mother, taking the knife as she sauteed onions.
“Ah–chop the vegetables first.” He nodded, chopping mushrooms, carrots, and potatoes. When he finished chopping the potatoes, Rei instructed him to soak them in water, and he moved on to cutting the meat as his mother grated ginger and minced garlic.
Meanwhile, Shouto boiled edamame. When it was done, he drained it and made a sauce with garlic, chili paste, onion, mirin, and soy sauce. Then, he added the edamame and tossed it together.
Natsuo was making dashi soup stock. When the dashi was done, he added miso paste and dissolved it into the soup. He added tofu, dried seaweed, and chopped green onions.
At the same time, Rei cooked the beef cubes and added the onions, seasoning, carrots and mushrooms, and beef stock and boiled it. She added a few more ingredients for seasoning and simmered, then added the potatoes. She added the curry roux that was in the fridge already last.
While the curry was cooking, Rei made the sauce for the mushroom salad and cut and fried mushrooms. She added the sauce after the mushrooms were cooked and tossed everything together.
When Fuyumi arrived home, it was to a meal cooked by her family, and all of them sitting waiting for her.
