Gab felt dead tired. It wasn’t bad enough that she got shot twice, but Asa had lost the chance to talk with her brother because of it. She sighed and slouched a bit, and Gabriel adjusted a bit from their position on her head. Asa said it was ok, but she couldn’t say she agreed or understood why.
Gab clicked away on her game idly, when there was a sudden knock at the door accompanied with Asa’s silhouette beyond the screen door.
“May I come in?”
“Knock yourself out.”
The door slid open, and Asa entered, holding a change of pajamas.
“Hey.” Gab said, sounding more pathetic than she wanted to.
Asa gave her a little smile and wave before she spoke. “Is it really ok that I'm staying here with you?” Asa had been staying in her own room prior to the raid, but Jin insisted they share over concern that there would be retaliation from the day's events.
“It's no big deal. Even if I'm injured, I'm still supposed to protect you. After that raid, it's best you stay close. Assassins…” Gab trails off, recalling Asa’s last encounter with them. Asa ended up dying once, and had to get her hands dirty. Gab’s chest tightened as she looked away from the other girl. “...yeah.”
Asa was quiet a moment before responding, no doubt reconsidering her choice of guard.
It should have been her.
“It's alright you know, Gab.”
Right. Even if she said that, it wasn’t that easy for Gab to accept.
Gab tilted her head back towards Asa, and saw her soft smiling face.
She is seriously unfair with how cute she is.
“I was in the hospital, so there was really nothing either of us could have done. Please, don't blame yourself for what happened.”
Gab could still picture the scene well. Asa's somber expression and the two bloodied corpses strewn out in front of her. Asa’s resolve was seriously impressive.
Still, she shouldn't have had to be the one to have killed those two. Should've been me and Gabriel biting those bastards' heads for the shit they pulled. Hell, she shouldn't have even been captured in the first place.
And now she missed the chance to talk with her brother because of me. Why would Asa hold herself back? I really didn't understand it.
Either way, she knew well enough Asa wouldn't accept as no for an answer here, so she relented.
“Yup. I know.”
Asa’s smile faded a bit. Pretty sure she totally saw right through that...
Gab did her best to change the subject.
“Well… the bed is pretty big so hopefully you don't mind sharing.” She gestured to the empty half.
“Are you sure? I don't want to impose. I mean, I don't mind taking the couch.” Asa said, trying her best to sound casual as she broke into a cold sweat.
A smug expression began to form on Gab’s face. My, my, now who was lying. Gab knew Asa hated being alone in the dark. She was being too considerate.
“Really, it's fine. It's best you stay close so Gabriel and I can protect you.”
“Alright, alright! I give.” Asa stifled a laugh. Her smile was seriously way too sweet.
Suddenly, Asa began pulling up her shirt, and Gab’s eyes widened, quickly pulling her gaze away from Asa’s way too toned abs as a blush began to form on her face.
Right. That's a thing.
Gab pulled at a loose thread coming off of her comforter like it was the most interesting thing in the world while Asa changed into her pajamas.
After a moment, Asa spoke with a sheepish smile. “Just stay where you are, I’ll climb over, ok? Don’t want you to make your injuries worse after all.”
“Sounds good.” Gab did her best to feign disinterest as Asa's hand brushed against her hip.
“Oh, sorry.”
Asa climbed over Gab, tummy poking out of her tank top. Gab simply stared forward, doing her best to ignore Asa's butt in her face as Asa made her way over onto her side of the bed.
She glanced over at Asa now that she had settled down, and saw she was tapping on her phone. Asa noticed Gab staring and gave her a smile. Gab smirked in response in an attempt to act normal.
“Want me to turn the light off? I really don't mind keeping it on if that would be better.” Gab asked, genuine.
Asa was a bit conflicted. On one hand she appreciated Gab asking, but she didn't want to bother Gab with her unconventional sleeping habits.
“No, it's alright, you can turn it off. Thank you for asking, though. I really appreciate how considerate you always are to me, Gab.” Asa gave her another sweet smile.
Cute. “Yeah, of course. I really care about you, you know. I just want to make sure you’re comfortable.” She gestured to the ceiling light and Gabriel floated up to grip the string, before pulling it downwards, making the room dark.
As Gab settled down herself, she thought she heard Asa mumble something to her left.
“Sorry, did you say something?”
Asa fumbled with her words a bit before she spoke up and continued. “...well, I, just wanted to say… that you're a very important person to me. Today was pretty scary. If something had happened to you…” Asa trailed off, choking a bit.
Gab swallowed hard. She knew she shouldn’t have made Asa worry. She waited for Asa to compose herself.
“So no dying, ok? No mission is worth that.” Asa gave a determined stare. “I feel safe here with everyone, but it's different when I'm with you. You’re irreplaceable. I don’t want to hear anything suggesting you’re not.”
Gab could feel a sting in her eyes, as she met Asa’s serious gaze. “Alright.” She said, and she meant it this time.
Asa continued. “I feel like I understand what’s really important when I’m with you. And well…” Asa paused for a moment, expression softening as she studied Gab’s face. She found even deeper resolve. “I like you, Gab. In that way, I mean.” She said, finally.
Gab was stunned silent. Did Asa really just say that? It was kind of a lot to consider right now, but Gab couldn’t restrain her own feelings anymore. Gab couldn’t stop her face from flushing and the big smile formed on her face. “I like you too, Asa.”
Asa and Gab just laid there for a moment smiling at each other, neither knowing how to continue. Finally, Asa broke the silence.
“Gab… is it ok if I be just a little selfish?” Asa said, quiet. Gab raised an eyebrow as Asa continued, “would it be ok if I put a hand on you while we sleep? I need to know you’ll be alright. Plus… the darkness…”
Asa's tone seemed uncharacteristically desperate and Gab could feel her heart shatter into a million pieces. This woman… “Please, Asa. Of course.” Gab gave her a soft look, a softer one than she had shown anyone in a long time, and opened her arms up to Asa, the invitation clear. Asa didn't hesitate in pulling Gab close, arms encircling around her with a firm yet tender embrace. Asa positioned her head under the crook of Gab's neck, ear pressed against her chest so that he could hear the soothing tones of Gab's heart, and for some reason, Gab wanted to burst into tears. Gab smiled serenely as Asa began to fade into sleep, and Gab pressed her lips to the top of Asa's head before she too began to fade.
