Regale

Summary:

Wearily, Kyoshi washed the war paint from her face.

Notes:

This is a prequel to Clay although you don't need to have read that to understand this one.

Work Text:

Wearily, Kyoshi washed the war paint from her face. It'd been a long day of training the Heritage and Peoples' Protection Team. Yun might've been insane by the end, but he'd been ingenious in inventing the Earth Chains. She'd been practicing them with the Team while also teaching them everything that Jianzhu had taught her. After she'd dried her face, she changed out of her war regalia and into a green silk sleeping robe. With the flick of a finger, she took up her lantern and walked out into her and Rangi's bedroom.

A small smile crossed her lips as she saw Rangi and tiny, 5 year-old, Su Ki curled up together in the enormous bed. Su Ki might not've been their biological child but to see her and Rangi together you could've mistaken them for mother and daughter. Half of the blanket they were wrapped in was sewn in Earth Kingdom green with cream trim while the other half was Fire Nation red with gold trim. It perfectly represented her and Rangi's love and Su Ki's birth heritage. They might not've been able to save Su Ki's parents a few months ago, but they were giving her a good life. Of course being the adopted, non-bender daughter of the Avatar would end up casting a long shadow on Su Ki. Between her, Rangi, Jinpa and Hei-Ran, they would make sure that Su Ki could stand on her own two feet mentally, emotionally and politically. By the time Su Ki was fully grown she'd be more than capable of defending herself and others with fist, fan and sword. A few weeks ago she had asked Jinpa to send a letter to the Eastern Air Temple asking permission for a fan-fitting for Su Ki. The Abbess's letter had arrived earlier saying that they would be honoured to do so; she couldn't wait to tell Su Ki at breakfast. Maybe she'd ask if Ju Li and some of the other girls wanted to train with Su Ki? It'd be a good bonding experience and when they were older they'd be able to defend Yokoya while they were dealing with other things.

Quietly, she crossed the floor, blew out her lantern and set it down on her bedside table. She slid into bed then embraced Rangi and Su Ki.

As she pressed a kiss against Su Ki's topknot, the girl stirred and murmured. "Hm? Hi, Mama. I missed you."

"Hi. I missed you too, Owlet-Kitten."

"Can we try doing some Horse Stance later?"

"Of course we can, now you should go back to sleep. It'll take a lot out of you." At least Rangi wouldn't make Su Ki do Horse Stance for 10+ hours.

Kyoshi kissed Rangi's hair then settled into a deep, dreamless sleep.
