Work Text:

Thursday, December 21st, 1989

Narcissa sighed snuggling into the blanket she had wrapped around her shoulders. The twenty-nine year old was currently sitting, ungracefully, on a couch in her living room, home alone, reading a book.

Her husband, Lucius Malfoy, was away on business for the next few days. And her nine year old son, Draco, was spending the night with the Nott family. So, for the next fifteen or so hours it would just be Narcissa, the house elfs, and Nancy Drew.

It wasn't that Narcissa didn't like her normal life, she did. But, it was nice to have a break from it all. A break from quidditch. A break from politics and business. Even an appreciated break from sex.

Don't get her wrong, Narcissa was never forced into sex. Lucius wasn't that kind of man. But, she did enjoy having sex whenever he was around, and consenting. Which meant that sometimes it got overdone. So, a break was nice. Though, she would probably change her mind about that by tomorrow night.

Right now, however, Narcissa was content with her hot chocolate and "The Secret of the Old Clock".

More than content, actually. "The Secret of the Old Clock" had been her favorite book growing up, and she was always happy to re-read it. It pleased her quite a bit, as well that although Draco wasn't much into Nancy Drew he would often ask her to read that book to him.

Part of that was likely because she had read it to him since he was around five, but still....

Narcissa shifted in her bed. She missed Lucius. After an hour-and-a-half of tossing and turning she would admit it; she really wanted her husband.

But, Lucius was away in Bulgaria until Saturday night, and couldn't come home. She wouldn't ask him to anyway, this was really important business. Still....It might be better if Draco was home, but he wasn't. And Narcissa wasn't going to force her son to end a sleepover just because she missed him and his dad. That was more than unfair.

Narcissa could go to her sister, Andromeda, but she would hate to bother her so late in the night. Especially since her sixteen year old was home for the holidays, and Andromeda rarely got to see the child anymore because of school and friends.

It seemed no matter what, Narcissa would be alone. At least, until she picked Draco up at 11:00 tomorrow morning. Just under twelve hours from the moment. It seemed like it would be forever. Narcissa knew it was ridiculous and untrue, but time seemed to have a habit of being too fast or slow just to spite her.

Twelve hours, two days. It wasn't long, but....A primal part of Narcissa wondered if she would ever see her family again.

Of course she would! But....So late at night, so alone, it was hard to believe.

If Severus were here, he would comfort her. Tell a funny story, play a board game, come up with some magical solution, maybe literally. But, Severus wasn't here, and wouldn't be for a few days.

Severus would come for a few hours on Christmas, he always did. And he came occasionally during the summer, including on Draco's birthday, but that was it. He was otherwise too busy. Narcissa got, she really did. But, she also missed her best friend.

Narcissa turned and sighed for what felt like the millionth time that night. She needed to sleep!

It would be a long time before she was able to.
