It’s always been your dream; Time Square in New York City for New Years Eve. You wanted the full experience too, standing in the cold for hours on end, crowded, just for that one single romantic moment in the arms of the love of your life. Last year you rambled on about it as you drifted off on the couch, feet perched on Nanami’s lap, watching confetti fall like snow on the square via your TV. You were talking to yourself more than anything, but Nanami was listening, next year’s Christmas present already getting planned out in that beautiful blond head of his.

“I can’t believe I’m actually here,” you say, in awe of all the bright lights of the big city.
Nanami smiled, the light in your eyes being more than worth having to keep this surprise for an entire year. Planning had been a breeze, but standing in freezing temperatures for hours on end in the drizzling rain was not.
Especially the no bathroom situation.
He adjusted the silly promotional Planet Fitness top hat that you insisted he wear as part of the experience.
“The lights are brighter in person than on TV,” he leans down to whisper in your ear over the roar of the crowd, “Are you having fun darling?”
“Yes, I’m having the best time,” you spin around to meet his lips, “I love you.”
He kisses you one last time as the one minute timer goes off, the weight of surprise #2 heavy in his coat pocket. His cheeks pinken with the look in your eyes as you gaze up at him. If anyone were to ask him about that, he’d blame the biting breeze.
“Anything for you sweetheart, I love you.”
Nanami holds you from behind, shielding you from the breeze as the crowd’s attention is directed towards the crystal ball.
“Ten, nine, eight,” the square begins to count down in unison. It’s at 5 seconds until midnight that Nanami takes a calming breath, deciding it’s now or never. He carefully takes a step back without you noticing, reaching into his coat pocket.
“One!” You excitedly turn around, ready for your midnight kiss that you’ve dreamed about, just to be met with an empty spot where Nanami used to be. Anxiety grows in your chest for the split second it takes for you to look downwards where Nanami could be found, down on one knee.
“Love of my life, will you do me the honor of marrying me, and becoming my wife” Nanami’s voice falters slightly, the only sign this stoic man is currently so nervous he barely knows what he’s doing. It’s snowing confetti at this point, but nonetheless he can still spot the wobble of your bottom lip as you nod your head and begin to cry.
Nanami slowly rises, New York, New York playing loudly as you all but leap into his arms, burying your face in his neck to save some of your dignity. You can feel more than hear him chuckling for the many couples around you swaying and singing around you.
“I spent months hunting for the perfect ring and you don’t want to take a look at it first before giving me an answer? What if it’s just a ring pop?”
You pull back just a little, just to have your breath stolen all over again. The ring was perfect, beautiful in its cut and design. You couldn’t have picked a more perfect ring if you’d done it yourself. You quickly covered your mouth with your right hand, fully not trusting yourself to make some stupid sort of noise as you held out your left for Nanami to slide the ring on.
It was a little tricky with both of y’all’s hands shaking with nerves and excitement, but the ring fit like a glove. It shined beautifully, the reflections of the billboards making the jewels and band absolutely glow.
You blinked back tears, happiness surging through your chest as you stood on your toes guided by Nanami’s large hands on your lower back. You were finally getting the midnight kiss you always wanted; Frank Sinatra crooned on in the background, strangers and cameramen cheering at the sight of your ring as you ran your fingers through your now fiancé’s blond undercut.
Everything felt right for once. Maybe 2023 will be your year.
