Work Text:
It was a little past midnight. The sun had long set, sinking down on the horizon. The streets outside were devoid of individuals, covered in thick piles of snow.
Inside a sleek, cozy apartment resided a sleepy Kuina. Who was buried under the comfort of her fluffy, gray blanket to keep her warm. Her eyes drooped now and then, trying to fight the sleepiness that is about to consume her. With one eye closed and the other slightly opened, she took a peek at her busy girlfriend typing away on her laptop, sitting on her desk adjacent to their bed.
Practice today was a little more tiring than usual. With Usagi joining her, it wasn't hard to immerse herself in the physical training she is used to. Her muscles aching, her body begging for sleep. But how could she? Ann was still busy finishing up a report. She needed that warmth and comfort of those arms wrapped around her. (Kuina admits, she can only sleep well with ann by her side. Preferably, cuddling.)
"Ann..", she whined, lightly kicking her legs under the blanket. The busy woman only replied with a soft hum, the clicking of the keyboard still apparent, her eyes never leaving the screen. Kuina huffed. Her lips jutted down in an adorable pout, eyes glaring. She was dead tired and her girlfriend won't even look at her! How is she not supposed to sulk?
"Ann!", the said girl only exhaled as she stopped what she was doing for a moment. Swiveling her chair around to catch a glimpse of her girlfriend covered by the thick blanket, peering at her with those warm, doe eyes. Her impassive face softened upon seeing those puppy eyes. "Come to bed, please?", Kuina pleaded in a small voice.
Hearing such a request, Ann couldn't help but let out a soft smile. "In a minute, baby. I just need to finish the outline, alright?", she muttered tenderly. Eyes gazing on Kuina who looked even tinier swallowed by the blanket.
The other girl could only nod her head, understanding that being a forensic scientist can be a bit busy sometimes. "Okay. I understand", she said feebly. Hearing the slight disappointment and sadness in Kuina's voice, Ann melted—feeling guilty for making her girlfriend gloomy. Keen on making her feel a tad better, Ann stood up from her swivel chair. Gingerly taking small, quiet steps on the carpeted floor of their bedroom. She approached the girl lying on their king-sized bed, leaning down to meet her eyes.
"I'll join you as soon as I get this done, okay?", tender hands glided over Kuina's silky hair, brushing it gently with long fingers massaging her scalp. The slight furrow in Kuina's eyebrows eased, the delicate manner lulling her to sleep. Ann found herself staring at the sleeping girl, the corners of her lips tugging up to form a sweet, loving smile.
After spending some time watching her girlfriend rest, looking as peaceful as a kitten taking a nap on a chilly winter, she got up slowly—making sure Kuina wouldn't stir awake. She got back in typing away at her laptop, adamant in finishing her work to join her girlfriend and rest.
..
Kuina was roused from her sleep as she felt the other side of the bed sinking. She realized that she had fallen asleep while waiting for her girlfriend, which in return received a glare from her. Ann grinned. "Sorry", she apologized, giving her a light—almost feather-like—peck on the tip of her nose. It was nearly 3 AM now, but at least she got her report done.
Having no choice but to forgive her, Kuina only mumbled, still sleep-induced. The taller girl took this as a sign to engulf her girlfriend in a warm hug, tenderly kissing the crown of her head. Kuina was now nestled cozily in Ann's arms. She nuzzled her face onto the taller's neck, sighing.
"You're lucky I love you", her muffled voice said softly. "I know. I love you too", roseate lips formed a gentle smile, holding her closer. She let her eyelids drop, hearing Kuina's soft breathing, it was a lullaby for her that coaxed her to sleep as well. Joining her other half in dreamland.
Both of them were nestled underneath the blanket, protected from the chilly bite of the winter season, holding each other close. Having one another as their source of warmth. A sanctuary they would always seek.
