Payu had honestly hoped that after the events of the previous year, with all the drama and intervention on their behalf by P'Pakin, this year’s racing events would be much less… eventful. For a while, they had been. People had known Sky and Rain were under protection and no one had done more than offer them friendly hellos. Or popcorn.
Payu was the closest he’d ever been to relaxing at a race with Rain in attendance and Pai was content to make moony eyes at Sky while everyone avoided racing him unless they’d become too big for their britches.
It could be said that things were going as well as they possibly could which should have, in Payu’s estimation, been the indication that something was bound to go wrong by the next race.
Lo and behold, Payu had barely stepped away for a few minutes while Pai was racing and returned to find Rain backed against one wall by a biker with more brawn than sense and Sky tersely telling another man to fuck off. Payu grit his teeth and motioned for the nearest security guards to follow him before pulling the biker off of Rain and shoving them into the one harassing Sky.
“You must be new around here,” Payu warned while pushing Rain and Sky behind him. Rain went easily while Sky kept making faces over Payu’s shoulder. “But you don’t bother these two. They’re not here for you to ogle at or hit on.”
“And what are you gonna do about it if we do?” one of the men said with a sneer.
“I’ll have you dismissed before the best racer finishes coming up behind you to ask if he can run you over with his bike,” Payu replied just as Pai pulled one of the men around to face him and began winding up for a punch.
“P'Pai, no!” Sky yelled. “You know the rules!”
Pai snarled and dropped his fist, but pushed the man towards the security guards that were already circling for the capture as it were. “Get out of here. If you touch my Sky again, I will make sure you’re used as the next speed bump on the race track.”
Once the men were escorted away by security, Payu breathed a sigh of relief, letting Sky and Rain move past him. Rain comforted Payu while Sky dusted off Pai’s racing jacket.
“Making a guy your new speedbump on the racetrack huh?” Sky scoffed. “P'Pakin owes you a favor or something?”
“He might. I’ve won him a lot of money this month, you know?”
“You’re obnoxious.”
“I’m obnoxiously in love with you.”
Sky gagged and stalked off, but Pai noticed the direction his lover was moving in, the direction of his racing trailer. After a quick glance to make sure Payu and Rain were happily consoling themselves or sucking face, Pai ran off to catch up with Sky. It was time for a different kind of ride.
