Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Luca woke up slowly. As he rose out of bed, he smelled bacon. Letting out a loud sigh, he walked to the kitchen to find his husband in the kitchen.

Shu was standing at the stove, his brows furrowed in concentration. He had trouble with figuring out the stove, so he resorted to using his magic to make fire. Shu Yamino was a sorcerer from the past who, by an accidental and supernatural series of events, ended up in the year 1968. He met Luca by chance when he offered him a place to stay after seeing him sleeping on a park bench. After a while, they started dating and soon became unofficially married. They had a small and secret wedding with close friends.

Shu hadn’t realized that Luca was standing in the doorway, and continued to cook him breakfast. Luca quietly snuck up behind him and hugged him from behind. Shu let out a small sound of surprise.

“Luca!” the sorcerer exclaimed, his flames flaring up. “Shoot..”

“What’re you up to Shubert?”

“Ah…” he chuckled awkwardly, “it was supposed to be a surprise.”

“My bad, I’ll just go back to bed,” Luca joked.

“No, no it’s fine..”

“Aww, you’re so cute when you’re pouting!”

“Shut up,” Shu blushed and turned away from the blonde.

They continued their morning eating their slightly burnt breakfast. Luca comforted Shu, telling him he liked it crispy. Their day continued with Shu working part time at a coffee shop, while Luca watched him. Shu acted annoyed with him, but he could be seen smiling when he turned around.

They had eaten dinner and were cuddling on the couch when the phone rang. Luca went to pick it up, his mouth pressing into a thin line.

“Alright, I’ll be there in a few,” he said, his tone uncharacteristically cold (at least for Shu).

“What was that love?” questioned the concerned sorcerer.

“Ah. you know, just a job I need to take care of,” he waved half-heartedly with his hand. “Don’t stay up for me; I might be back late.”

Despite Luca’s words, Shu sat down on the couch with a book to wait for his husband to return. Ever since learning about Luca’s job, Shu has had trouble sleeping. Especially when his husband is out working.

Luca Kaneshiro was a mafia boss. When Shu had learned that his sweet, adorable, caring lover was a mafia boss, he didn’t believe him at first. That was until Luca had come home one night, exhausted and covered in blood. Shu could only stare in shock as he went to wash himself off. He never found out how much blood was Luca’s, and how much was other people’s.

Shu had begun to doze off when he heard the door lock click. He whipped his head around, and flinched when a strong iron smell hit him.

Luca entered through the door quietly in the dark, seemingly not noticing Shu on the couch. When Shu called his name softly, he jumped.

“Sh-shu?! I thought I told you to not stay up for me.”

Shu reached for the lights. “I couldn’t sleep anyways,” he flicked on the lights, and was shocked to see a lack of blood on Luca, despite the smell. He examined the mafia boss, and noticed his unusual slouched posture, his left hand clutching his abdomen.

Noticing Shu’s gaze, he reassured him, “I’m fine, I promise.” To which Shu responded with a heavy sigh.

Before Shu could ask him where he was, Luca sucked in a quick breath and winced. Surprised, Shu reached out to him, “Luca!?” It was then that Shu had seen the red seeping through the blonde’s shirt. “Luca!”

Luca turned away. “It’s fine, I’ll take care of it. It’s not fatal.”

“What- what is it?”

Luca didn’t respond.

“Is it… from a gun?”

The silence answered his question. Shu gasped, and tears sprung to his eyes. Luca saw Shu’s worried expression, and immediately felt a sharp pain in his heart, and it wasn’t from any physical wound.

“Shu… I’m fine, really.”

“Don’t.”

“What?” Luca’s eyes widened, surprised by the sorcerer’s cold tone.

“Don’t act like you’re okay when I know you’re not. Do you know how it feels when your husband leaves every other night and comes home covered in blood and injured? You tell me to not wait up, but how on Earth could I possibly sleep when it’s possible that at that very moment you could be dead!” Shu’s usually calm demeanor was completely gone. Tears were running down his face, and his voice and body were shaking violently.

“I didn’t realize you felt that way…” Luca whispered solemnly. “You don’t need to worry, I know what I’m doing, I promise.”

“I will never stop worrying as long as you’re a mafia boss.”

“What’re you saying?”

“I’m saying that if you continue to do this… I don’t think I can do… this.”

“Wait, what?!” Luca was shocked. Shu had never told him that his job bothered him that much.

“If you continue to go out and get hurt like this… I don’t know if I can handle it.”

“Shu… I made a promise, okay? I’m sorry but I can’t quit now.”

You also made a promise to me! Many promises! You promised me that you’d stay safe, and that you’d always be here for me. How can you keep both?” Shu’s voice broke on his last sentence. “If you plan to keep this up… then why don’t you just go off so I’m not stopping you?”

“C’mon, you don’t mean that right?” Luca let out a shaky laugh.

“I…” Shu hesitated for a second, “Yes. I do.”

“I’m sorry Shu…” Shu’s heart dropped, “But I really can’t.”

Shu stood there for a second, in shock. He couldn’t believe that Luca would choose his job over him. Maybe it was selfish to make him choose, but the fact that he wouldn’t choose Shu hurt him more than he’d like to admit.

“Then go.”

And he did.
