weakness, in our hands

Summary:

Kazuha is always looking forward, while Heizou can only watch from afar.

Kazuha has always been enamored by great ambition. Heizou's weakness are those who shine brighter than any fire flower.

Notes:

OH MY i finally wrote a kazuhei these two have consumed my brain for the past 2? 3? months uncontrollably. this is my first time writing them, so i consider this a test run and hoping for the best. the entirety of this fic is based on kazuha's story quest line where he mentioned his interest in great ambition being a flaw in his character, and heizou's teapots lines where he shares his "weakness" with the traveler. i obviously dont think these are exclusive only to each other given the real context of the lines but i thought it was interesting to connect to each of them nonetheless! i sped wrote this so hopefully it makes sense...but enjoy

Work Text:

Kazuha has determined a major weakness of his. Clear as day, and all he can do is embrace it as a part of his character. Because, truly, there was no way he could fight against it.

Time and time again, he had heard the sounds of delight, of fireworks even, coming from other people when they spoke of dreams and desires. No matter how large or all, everyone in the world had their aspirations. Something they longed for, would do anything to achieve. It brought warmth to Kazuha’s heart. It was a beauty in the world that he would be willing to draw his sword to protect.

Everyone’s dreams and aspirations belonged to themselves, and no one else. He would carry on this belief with him.

And even more truly fascinating to him is when these dreams spiral into something bigger. Grand aspirations, he would call it. Those who desire something grand that they devote everything to it. Kazuha found himself intrigued by them, the things that make these people’s eyes glimmer in wonder — the wonder would reflect in his own.

He even saw it in his friend’s eyes, his current traveling companion for a short time, in the calm before the storm. His friend questioned Kazuha about the Musou No Hitotachi, used by the Raiden Shogun herself. The Musou No Hitotachi was only used to sentence divine punishment, a fate clear as day, but his friend longed to see it for himself. He wanted to withstand it, to counter it, to spar against it. The thought baffled Kazuha, and troubled him to some degree. Could there really be someone who could withstand it?

Kazuha, at the time, opened his mouth to ask this very question, but promptly shut it. Determination glimmered in his dear friend’s eye, and he knew that he could not strip this from him. Defeated, he sighed. If anyone could do it, then surely…

His mind shook back to the present, immediately feeling a disturbance in the air. The wind moved differently than it had moments before, an occurrence that Kazuha knew could only be caused by another person with control of the wind. An anemo vision? Kazuha considered the time, knowing that he had to be meeting up with his friend again soon. There should still be some time…to satisfy his curiosity. After all, he hadn’t met many other anemo vision wielders in his travels.

He felt the disturbance again, briefly, and let it be his guide. It fell silent after that, so Kazuha moved on instinct soon after. It was no matter, as it only took a minute or so to run into the exact person he was looking for. The first thing Kazuha spotted was an anemo vision glowing. It was clipped onto this person’s outfit near his waist. He was facing the other way, seemingly deep in thought by the looks of it. Kazuha’s footsteps were lighter than the average person’s, so it’s likely the other hasn’t noticed him at all yet.

Kazuha could tell that this person was feeling troubled.

“Is something the matter?”

Without missing a beat, the man’s head whipped around to look at Kazuha. His eyes were wide in surprise, before quickly shifting into something scrutinizing and calculating. It made Kazuha suddenly feel exposed, though he had nothing to hide. He took in the other’s appearance for a moment — lovely green eyes, twin moles, tousled burgundy hair that became a mess from the absolute force he had shifted.

“Man alive, you nearly scared me there.” The man finally spoke, waving a hand nonchalantly. It was masked now, but Kazuha could tell the other was being carefully mindful.

“…Nearly? Ah — I apologize. I did not mean to sneak up on you.” The man blinked at the ‘nearly’ remark briefly, before quickly shaking his head.

“Never mind that,” The stranger continued, offering Kazuha a smile. “Before I answer your question, I think it’s fair that you tell me your name, first?”

A nod. “Kaedehara Kazuha. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Mm,” The other hummed, in thought briefly. “I’m Shikanoin Heizou. The newest — but sharpest — detective of the Tenryou Commission! And as for your previous question, I’m afraid I can’t give you much information.”

So that explained it. The constant feeling over being scrutinized — Heizou was a detective. How interesting. “I see. But is there anything I could do to assist you?”

“That really isn’t necessary.” Heizou shook his head, folding his arms. “I’ve nearly got it, just…” He trailed off suddenly.

Kazuha pondered for a moment himself, eyes scanning around to the area Heizou had been staring at beforehand. Then, he noticed.

“Right there. There are footprints and tracks, though they’ve mostly been covered due to the rain from yesterday. And there — on the tree, there are slight scrapes. As if a wagon of sorts brushed it briefly.”

Heizou blinked, not in shock — but in what Kazuha was surprised to see was complete interest. He suddenly felt bashful.

“That is all. I do not believe that they are nearby right now, though. If this is the trail you are seeking,” Kazuha continued, allowing the detective to soak in his information. “I also smell the scent of rain upon us soon. The trail will soon be covered completely.”

He then paused, narrowing his eyes. Something was off.

“But, perhaps you are already aware of all of this?”

Heizou did not seem to react at all to that, staring forward at Kazuha in awe. “How interesting…” He finally said, after a long moment. The samurai merely tilted his head slightly in response, confused. “Perhaps — ah, but…where do I go from here?”

“Pardon?”

“Ah? Oh, it’s nothing.” Heizou shook his head, shooting a reassuring smile. “Simply musing to myself. I can’t disclose any information about this case for the time being, sorry! But that was impressive!”

And he saw it, that familiar sparkle. That familiar air that rang bells in his ears.

“It was nothing. I’m not sure I helped, but…”

“No, thank you for the showcase of skill. You’ve got to tell me how you did it! I knew about this trail since yesterday, but now most of the lead shouldn’t be noticeable. Ah, you’re a charmer, you know that?”

“Since…yesterday, you say?” Kazuha’s face contorted more into confusion than before, skepticism written all over him. He knew that Heizou had known more than he let on, but this far in advance?! The other seemed to realize what he’d said, shaking his head dismissively.

“Oh…yes. Like I said, I am the sharpest detective! I have long since figured out their whereabouts,” Heizou laughed. “But sometimes it’s about what your move should be next, eh?”

Kazuha figured there was more to that statement, but he also figured that as near strangers…Heizou wouldn’t be willing to share it with him. He was a strange one indeed, though. But the samurai didn’t mind it. Instead, he offered his own small smile in return.

“I see. Then shouldn’t you get a move on before they do? Surely they won’t stick around for the oncoming storm.”

He gained a hum in response from Heizou, who stretched his arms briefly. His anemo vision glowed for a moment. “Hm, I guess so. I’d hate to cut this meeting short, but I should go before any harm is caused!”

“Naturally. Please, take care.” Kazuha needed to get moving, too. Now that the storm has invaded his senses, he knows he must find shelter from the rain before it starts.

“Though, I do hope we meet again! I’d really like to know how you were able to notice all of that,” Heizou continued, and Kazuha noticed his demeanor had loosened up a bit. “Especially that last part about the rain. The sky still looks fine, I can’t sense anything at all — I’ll have to treat you to a meal or something if you’re right. For some reason, intuition tells me you’re not lying.”

The other began walking away, leaving Kazuha standing there. He was far preoccupied with that all too familiar glow in Heizou’s face that he had grown weak to seeing — not just a dream, but a grand ambition at its finest. Most of the time, Kazuha could bear not to know. Everything hopes and wishes belonged to themselves. But he was so curious…he wanted to know more about the detective.

“I’m sure we will, I trust that the wind will always help me find my destination. And I am sure it will lead me back to you. So, I’ll hold you to it,” Kazuha responded. “Bye, detective.”

“Later, Kazuha!” As if they knew they’d see each other again.

And they sure would.

It would start as a coincidence at first, just a mere accident. The first time, Heizou had taken Kazuha to his promised meal — because surely enough, the storm had come just as Heizou had closed his case. Kazuha remembers the intrigue in his eyes, winning over that calculating stare that saw straight through you when the detective was investigating. It was endearing to see another side to him like that. But, it didn’t stop just there. Kazuha would continue to find Heizou in his investigations. Just outside of Konda Village, he had helped Heizou find stolen goods and belongings that nobushi and had left behind in a panic. In Inazuma City, he’d helped him get many missing cat cases out of the way so that he could continue with grander things. Out by the sea, they had tracked down a murderer making his escape.

And so many more.

At some point, the samurai realized, it stopped feeling like an accident. These meetings had become cleverly disguised intent, the two always managing to seek each other out. It was not hard for Kazuha to find him — it was quite easy to track down a cyclone whilst being one with wind. Especially the moment the cyclone would strike. Kazuha hadn’t believed his eyes the first time he’d seen Heizou in combat. It was inevitable, given the tasks they were performing. Instead of fighting with a weapon, he opted for hand to hand combat, infused with anemo. He had never seen anything like it, and couldn’t help but even feel perhaps the slightest bit entranced by it. How precisely he moved, how serious he looked — yet, Heizou told Kazuha that he preferred not to fight at all.

It wasn’t information that came as a surprise, Kazuha could sympathize in fact. Heizou had told him that he didn’t like blunt measures, nor did he like striking others down. Not to mention, it is just a sure reminder that something bad has already happened. Heizou had told him this with sad eyes, sad eyes that still held such strong will and determination. So he could not look away. A bit hesitantly, upon being questioned, Heizou had also informed Kazuha that his skills came from his father. But the subject was dropped after that, the air feeling the slightest bit tense and unsure.

What is it exactly that makes you shine?

And just now, in one of their not so coincidental meetings, they had just wrapped up fighting some nobushi that had been stirring up trouble for some people that lived in the area. They sat under a tree just outside Ritou, taking this opportunity to tend to their wounds before heading their separate ways.

“I heard about something the other day,” Kazuha spoke. Heizou’s response was but a hum to let him know he was listening. The samurai’s brow raised in anticipation of his next response. “‘The Bantan Sango and Heizou’ detective agency.”

“Oh,” Heizou grimaced, and Kazuha couldn’t help the laugh that forced itself out of him. And that seemed to break Heizou out of it enough to let out a whine. “Ancient history. It is in the past. My name probably isn’t in the title anymore.”

“May I ask…what happened?” Heizou looked confused, which Kazuha understood. But in the time that they’d become friends, he had found himself so curious.

“My, am I under investigation now?” Heizou teased, giving Kazuha a quick wink. “Have I caught your attention?”

Steadfast, Kazuha nodded. “I apologize if I was invasive, however I am curious. I believe you have caught my attention.”

The other flustered a pretty shade of red, averting his eyes for a moment and coughing. “So forward! Kazuha…” And Kazuha laughed softly, then gave Heizou a nod to let him know he would cease teasing. “Anyways, I can tell you…sure.”

“By all means, dear friend. I am listening.”

“It was just some…differences in opinion, I guess. We started that detective agency together — yet we couldn’t even agree on what it means to be a detective!” Heizou began his rant, and Kazuha listened, resting his head in his palm after applying the last bandage he needed. His ears sang for each word, hearing it all laced with nothing but pure passion towards something Kazuha hoped Heizou would direct him at. “Sango just doesn’t listen to reason! She talks big about how detectives' goals are to uncover the truth and get answers.”

“Mm, is that not true though?” In Kazuha’s mind, what more was there to it?

“No…no, it’s true.” Heizou sighed, looking down for a moment. He pouted. Cute. “But it frustrates me. It’s a sentiment that all detectives — even me — cradle to our hearts. So why does it still bring me dread?”

Kazuha didn’t have an answer to that. He merely blinked.

“So I told her that there must be more to it. The truth isn’t the only thing that matters,” Heizou continued, more carefully this time. As if he’s thinking of something. Something that’s already happened, that he can’t let slip. “So — a-ahem — anyways, it just didn’t work. She is so stubborn that she couldn’t get my message. So all we could do was fight. I needed to go somewhere else so as to not hold my genius back, so I left.”

“It seems you two care about each other a lot,” Kazuha mused aloud, earning an unimpressed glare from Heizou.

“All of that, and that’s your conclusion? Kazuha, maybe you’re not as bright as I give you credit for.”

With a shake of his head, Kazuha continued. “You seem to value each other’s opinions a lot, which resulted in such a strong response from the two of you. And you’re both clearly passionate about your work. Perhaps one day, you could make amends?”

“I’m not sure she’d like that,” Heizou replied, a smirk gracing his lips. “I am known for my reputation of being difficult to get along with, you know.”

“We get along just fine,” Kazuha pointed out, expression falling back to neutral. “Just a suggestion. But thank you for telling me. My curiosity has been satisfied.”

There was a long beat of silence. Kazuha noticed Heizou shift, as if he wanted to say something. And just moments later — “So, Kazuha. Now I have a question for you.”

“Of course, I’m all ears.”

“Do you think it’s possible to stop crime in its tracks?”

“Entirely? Ah…that is…hard to say.” Kazuha knew the answer. It was a likely ‘no’, but he knew that Heizou was looking for something different. The detective gave him an understanding look with a softened expression.

“Right…of course. It is hard to say, isn’t it?” Heizou laughs then, before a hint of determination and confidence makes their way into his posture. “But that’s my goal! Think about it…when a detective goes to work, that means someone was already hurt. And even when the crime has been punished — the damage was already done.”

Kazuha saddens at that. “Yes…that is true. Unfortunately, there is no denying that.”

“You heard what those nobushi called me earlier right? I am the ‘cyclone’ to them.” As you are to me, in a different way. “My goal is to be known all across Teyvat, and be evil’s natural enemy. If they know the cyclone is present, then evil won’t strike.”

Kazuha was astounded, unable to stop his heart from picking up pace. The sudden information — it has been all he has sought. The expression on Heizou’s face was all he longed to see, unbridled will and passion. He loved it. The detective then laughed softly, averting his gaze.

“That was a lot, sorry. I don’t usually get worked up like that.” He tried to shrug it off, but Kazuha shook his head.

“No…thank you for sharing your wishes with me. I am truly honored to be someone that you can entrust with them.”

“Then…what do you say?” The man quickly recovered, smirking. “Think I can accomplish it?”

There was absolutely no difference in the world from before. It was the same question, same scenario — but Kazuha had context. The answer was no, it was too unlikely, but something in his heart willed him to believe. His heart spoke before his brain could catch up. “Yes. I trust that you can do it.”

Kazuha’s reward was the biggest, cheekiest Heizou smile he’s ever received. And he thinks it was worth it. And he does believe in the impossible, this time. How could he not, seeing how determined Heizou was to make it happen?

“Good answer!” Heizou cheered, with a satisfied snap of his finger. And so, Kazuha returned his smile warmly.

“Good luck, Heizou.” They looked at each other for a moment smiling, before Heizou flopped over, head landing in Kazuha’s lap and laying on the ground. An action that even Kazuha hadn’t seen coming.

“Man alive Kazuha, you’re so cool! Make sure you don’t forget about me, ‘kay?”

“Of course not, my friend. I wouldn’t dream of it.” Heizou smiled up at him, seemingly satisfied with the response. He leaned forward slightly, to brush a strand of hair from Heizou’s face that blocked him from his eyes.

“Kazuha?”

“Yes?”

Heizou remained in place, looking up at him. All analytical looks have left him, leaving him for — likely the first time — vulnerable and normal in front of Kazuha. Amongst his own heart rate increasing, Kazuha could hear Heizou’s as well. He felt at peace like this.

“I have one more question for you. Out of personal interest,” Heizou began. He didn’t seem to mind Kazuha messing with his hair, so he moved another hair that looked uncomfortable over his face. Perhaps he could tame this unruly hair today. Like this, he almost reminded Kazuha of his friend’s cat. The thought amused him, combing his fingers through his hair.

“Please go on.” Kazuha urged, wanting to hear the rest. Before the cities of Ritou would go rowdy and his senses would be full of more than just the peace in front of him.

“Hm. What is it you wish for? Your…goals? What makes you the happiest?” The questions from Heizou weren’t unwelcome, but not the direction Kazuha had expected.

“Why this all of a sudden?”

“Because, Kazuha…I was open with you about my wishes. And I care about yours too. I suppose I am just interested, since you say so little about yourself.”

“Even in non detective pursuits, you still act very much like one,” Kazuha teased lightly. What was there to say about him, anyways? “I don’t think I have the answer you’d like…I am but a wandering samurai. I have no destination.”

“A simple person, I see.” Heizou laughed quietly. “But that’s not a bad thing, no? And is there anything in this world you’d like to do someday?”

A pause. “I suppose…I wouldn’t mind venturing out into the world. I often wonder what the world has to offer outside of Inazuma. I desire nothing more than going where the wind wishes to carry me, and my blade. Nothing would make me happier than feeling that peace…at last.”

He did his best to speak through his heart, the same way Heizou had for him. He received a tender look from the detective. “That sounds nice, too. It sounds just like you. Good luck, Kazuha.”

The response was simple, but his heart felt it all the same. He felt there was…a mutual understanding between those with anemo visions, and now more than ever…he knew Heizou understood it. It made him happy.

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

Another long moment of silence. Leaves fluttered around them, one of which eventually making haste for Heizou’s hair, which Kazuha had finally finished combing out with no protest. He gently picked it out from his friend’s hair, holding it in front of both of them between his fingertips. Before Kazuha could speak, Heizou beat him to it.

“The scenery here really suits you, y’know. Ah, the maple trees are always so beautiful!”

Kazuha felt heat rush to his own face, absentmindedly letting go of the leaf. Surely, Heizou hadn’t meant the second half of that statement for him — merely the trees.

“— AH!!!” Heizou suddenly jumped up, startling Kazuha. His eyes widened, pulse quickening for a different reason now. Less pleasant, more panicked.

“Is something wrong?”

“I need to finish my reports! Madame Kujou Sara was in a particularly bad mood this morning with me! I shouldn’t give her any more reason today, not now…heh…”

Kazuha visibly relaxed, knowing there was no real danger. “Ah, have you skipped out on your patrols again?”

Heizou’s eyes narrowed. “And how’d you know about that anyways?”

“I heard some particularly agitated doushin when I passed through Inazuma City recently. They spoke of a doushin who refused to go on patrol again. I assumed…”

“Agh! Okay, okay…whatever. I get it. Anyways, I should get going before I really hear it. Thank you for helping me today, Kazuha!”

“Of course. Anytime. Please take care.” He waved towards his friend that rushed away quickly. Always in such a hurry…a busy detective he was. What would it take for a wandering samurai to steal more of his time?

(Pretty soon, a wandering samurai would be the only thing on his mind.)

It wasn’t long afterwards, the vision hunt decree had officially begun. All that Kazuha had desired, hoped for, longed for…it was taken from him in an instant. He now had to quickly move from place to place and conceal his vision carefully. The Tenryou Commission would seek out all visions on behalf of the Raiden Shogun. In a spur of the moment decision, he had stopped traveling with his friend for the time being — the risk of getting caught while traveling in a duo was more than going alone.

Kazuha was on his own. Not that he didn’t mind the solitude, but there was a heavy weight as he traveled from place to place. A tense, thick air. And what made matters far worse, is that the vision hunt decree was stripping vision wielders of everything — all desire, hopes, dreams, ambition.

It angered him greatly.

In the midst of it all, despite the risk, Kazuha still tried to seek out Heizou. But, of course, it was impossible now. As furious as the winds circling the cyclone right now may be, calling out to Kazuha — he still avoided him nonetheless. He figured there was a case he desired help with — yet was so far out of reach.

And it made sense, Kazuha understood. For Heizou to meet up with Kazuha now under the surveillance of the Tenryou Commission made things all too problematic. Heizou did not want anything to happen to him, or any vision wielders, so he would not approach them. So it appeared he would have to let the angry cyclone persist, against his own wishes.

He soon had another thing to be concerned about anyways. As he walked in the present, he would hear hushed whispers. Ones that made his heart stop in his chest.

Didn’t you hear? It’s a challenge of a duel before the throne!

A vision wielder too! Doesn’t he realize how risky that is?!

A loss results in divine punishment, does it not?

Kazuha immediately threw himself in the opposite direction from where the winds whispered for him. He made haste for Inazuma City — for his friend, who was currently facing the battle he’d hoped for all along. Please, withstand it. We have not said our farewells yet, have we?

Great ambition can be a beautiful thing, but it can also be painful.

What kind of expression was on your face? It was the only thought Kazuha could process before retrieving his dying friend’s vision, the last reminder of his hopes and dreams. In doing so, he would now surely make himself the most wanted person in all of Inazuma. His fate would now be sealed.

It was no longer about retaining his vision, but retaining himself. And soon enough, the number one detective of the Tenryou Commission would soon be on his case. At least he would have his attention now. Not favorably, however.

To Kazuha’s surprise, as he fled the Shogun, there was no sign of Heizou to come. No disturbance in the air. Could he not bring himself to chase after Kazuha, after all? A part of his heart ached. Please — the life his eyes held, the determination…he wanted to see them once more. But it seemed he would look the other way.

— No, please turn back around —

It wasn’t until Kazuha had made it all the way to Ritou, where the Kamisato commissioner had prepared his escape route, that he had finally finally caught wind of the ever elusive detective. As if he were waiting (of course, he would know before anyone else). He never approached him, however. And there was no time. Kazuha had to go, now.

He climbed aboard the ship, heart feeling void as he clutched onto a cold, dead vision. Kazuha is greeted by people, but hardly has the energy to greet everyone as kindly as he’d like. They all brushed it off as he peered back to Inazuma once more.

Farewell, my home…I will return to you, someday. A maple leaf landed on his palm. Truly, as he mused before, it is a shame that so many goodbyes are said once they turn red. He felt tears begin to surface, holding the vision tighter and watching his home disappear in the distance.

--

Weakness — Heizou knew, was a dangerous thing for him to share. Especially in his line of work, where his name was well known. There were enemies more than willing to learn how to strike down a cyclone, but he would never allow them access to such methods. And in truth, his weakness was plain, simple, easy

So painfully obvious, that he can’t believe he never realized it until Kazuha made it so clear that he simply couldn’t avoid it. Ever since then, he’d noticed the trend in his life all the way up until that point. The samurai had unlocked so many doors and missing puzzle pieces for him, even unintentionally. And Heizou was so grateful for it.

Kazuha’s poems were a mystery that Heizou was ever determined to solve. Ever since they’d first spoken, his voice had always drawn him in. And when they’d both opened that day in Ritou — Heizou felt a strong desire to hold on forever. Kazuha was an amazing person. Not only was he kindhearted, but his skills at detective work put many professionals to shame. The detective could only wish he could have half the same ability to nature as him.

But that wasn’t it, no. That was too weak to be his weakness. Rather — the very moment Kazuha had spoken of traveling and peace, and the moment he smiled without reserve. His heart swelled with an emotion that longed only to keep him that way forever. And he’d realized these were the same feelings he had towards Watatsumi Island on his brief travels. When something, or someone, shines so beautiful and bright in the world…he has no choice in his heart but to protect them. Even if they cause slips in his judgment. Slip ups that could cost him rather than the other way around.

It would be worth it, he thought. Heizou watched the ship as it drifted away in the distance, with the very wandering samurai that made him realize it all. As long as Kazuha can be free and happy, to wander as his heart so pleases.

You’ve always wanted to travel all of Teyvat, right?

He had known of Ayato Kamisato’s plan to help Kazuha flee Inazuma. For Heizou, the deduction was elementary. As was convincing the Tenryou Commission that he should be the one to investigate the docks whilst everyone else is more useful in search elsewhere. He figured he could give him a hand, even if it were unwanted.

As he walked away from Ritou to give his report, Heizou’s heart ached a little. He quickly willed the feeling away. Kazuha would return, sooner or later after all.

…And he would be correct, as expected. Heizou wasn’t present for it, but he had heard about Kazuha parrying the Musou No Hitotachi and had to fight every urge in him to rush to the scene immediately and pull him to safety. There was no need — Kazuha was the strongest person he knew, and this was proof. He later smiled in thought of the news. You bring hope to everyone, don’t you?

A long time later, after the vision hunt decree had finally been taken away and Inazuma was open to the world again, he figured it would be a matter of time before he must face Kazuha again. After all, Kazuha had always sought him out. Heizou knew it then, and he knew it now. A week or so had passed now since Kazuha had come to the Tenryou Commission for his belongings, only to part with the majority of them. Heizou acted in cowardice, choosing to quickly vacate the area. But not before hearing Kazuha ask about his whereabouts. But you know, don’t you? Kazuha had once told Heizou that he was always able to feel his presence in the air. Like a rush of winds that disturbed the natural air.

Nevertheless, Heizou has finally found the courage in his heart to approach his dear friend once again days later. “Kazuha! Long time no see!” The samurai seemed unphased, and turned towards him calmly. Amazing composure, as always.

Heizou missed him so much. More than he could ever imagine.

“Heizou, my friend. It seems that fate finally allowed us to meet again.” Heizou was naturally good at reading people, as it was part of his job – so the tension in his shoulders relaxed when Kazuha seemed happy to see him. Not that the other ever attempted to hide his emotions anyways. He was always open and honest.

“Yes. Fate is interesting, isn’t it? I believe it’s something we can only form ourselves.” Heizou spoke, and to save himself from a tangent, he shook his head and laughed. “How have you been?”

Like he even needed to ask. This was the very best he’s ever seen Kazuha. Heizou could tell his heart was free to soar and that he was happily living his life as he pleases. Finally, finally, free of all of the heartache that had plagued his life for far too long. His heart was full of joy. So traveling has been doing wonders for him, after all.

Kazuha has always been a selfless, kindhearted person. For as long as Heizou had ever known him, he had done nothing but be supportive. He would seek Heizou out just to offer his help, something that he’d begun to believe to be unthinkable otherwise. Everyone else he meets usually assumes that Heizou is capable of handling himself in every way. As if his confidence was unwavering, even in critical decision making that changes people’s lives. More times than he could count, he has been put into those troublesome predicaments. What if I do the wrong thing? Without a shoulder to rely on, until Kazuha pried his way in.

And it was not just Heizou, no. Nearly everyone he’s met speaks highly of Kazuha and thinks highly of him as well. In Heizou’s mind, he is even brighter than a flaming flower. He always lends a helping hand, words of encouragement, and fights with his sword to protect others.

He could afford to be a little more selfish.

“As of lately? Better,” Kazuha replied. His expression rang bittersweet for a moment, likely in thought of the vision hunt decree that had caused him so much heartache. “Much better. How are you, detective?”

“Hmm,” Heizou began, trying his hardest to will down any strong feeling of fondness. “Well, it is a shame. I am standing in front of the one person who has ever escaped me, and ruined my spotless record. And what am I to do about it?”

If it were anyone else, they might have believed Heizou were telling the truth. But Kazuha was perceptive, so a laugh was earned from it. In Heizou’s mind, his record was still spotless.

“Ah, but…in seriousness, I am fine. I’ve been solving cases as always, and it is also a weight off of my shoulders for the decree to finally disappear.”

“That is a relief.” Kazuha heaved a sigh. “Heizou, it really is nice to see you again. I have missed your companionship.”

His heart fluttered at that, unwillingly. He knew what it meant, and he knew what Kazuha’s fond eyes on him met. But Heizou could not admit it.

“Ah? So you weren’t lying back then, when you said I’ve caught your attention? Well…I am touched. I’ve missed you, too.”

The silence was awkward after that. Where did Heizou go from here? He wasn’t sure if he really should be here at all. It came back to him all at once. His intuition is impeccable and reliable, but when it came to acting on things, it was a different story. He can’t take back any mistakes once they’ve been made. And he’s not sure if his presence holds Kazuha back or not. Maybe he was overthinking it, but –

“Heizou, is something the matter?” Kazuha asked, expression set calmly neutral. But again, Heizou could sense the concern on his tongue. Heizou did not like lying, but he was also not sure of himself. So the best he could do was ease Kazuha’s worries.

“There is nothing wrong. Anyways! What brings you to Ritou, today?” The other’s brow raised, clearly knowing something was up but did not pry.

“I am helping Captain Beidou with communicating with some Liyue guests visiting Inazuma for the time being, as well as stocking up. We will be sailing again in two weeks.”

“I see,” Heizou replied, nodding. So Kazuha would be setting sail again. What kind of wonderful adventure would he set on, this time? Heizou ignored the part of him that knew he’d miss his friend oh so deeply.

“But for now…I am free. Now would be a good time for us to catch up, would it not? Are there any big cases for the day?”

Heizou really did not want to waste Kazuha’s time. The very brief time he would be spending in Inazuma, but a selfish part of him really really wanted to have Kazuha’s time – even briefly. And so they caught up, they took the time to become reacquainted once more. And more and more, more than ever, the feelings inside Heizou’s chest blossomed.

Two weeks later, Kazuha had set sail again. A part of Heizou’s heart ached, but he knew he would return to Inazuma again. Someday, they’d meet again.

...Sooner than expected, actually. Heizou had been sent on behalf of the Tenryou Commission to investigate the happenings of the latest test of courage. Almost immediately, he had spotted both the traveler and Itto – who had some clear plans of mischief for the test, but Heizou did not mind. He knew that the oni was just looking to liven things up. He nearly faltered, however, catching a glimpse of familiar hair later, investigating the test grounds in Chinju Forest.

Kazuha was here for the test of courage?

For the first time in awhile, his heartbeat picked up. He was busy with this case, so he needed to focus. Afterwards, he could speak to Kazuha again. A part of his brain wondered how it would go, if he dropped it all and partnered with Kazuha for the silly trials? Would Kazuha be afraid, cling to Heizou maybe? Or, the more likely scenario, he would be unphased by it all. No. Focus.

When all was said and done, Heizou had to quickly remove himself from the situation. He was all too reminded of something far too familiar to him upon reaching the conclusion of this case. An old friend, a green pebble that still stuck to his bedside to this day, the mention of a festival and of betrayal…and yet instead of giving him more work to focus on, the Tenryou Commission gave him a pat on the back for a job well done and left him to himself.

Usually, he’d love these opportunities. The detective would have more breathing room to pursue cases of his own interest. But now, he desperately looked through cold cases for something – anything, to keep his mind busy. He picked up the first moderately interesting cold case, and remembered a certain maple leaf samurai he longed to meet again. Perhaps, just maybe…it really would be okay to work together, for old time’s sake? Maybe it would be a good enough reason to ask for Kazuha to stand next to him for just a bit longer.

Heizou made haste, back near to where the festival was to take place. He halted just outside the festival though, unable to take those last few steps forward. Come on, you should be able to handle this by now. But, almost as if he could feel the detective’s dilemma, he spotted Kazuha heading straight for him.

It was now, or never. “Will you have some time in the next few days, Kazuha?” A pause, as Kazuha finally reached him. “I’d like you to work on a case with me.”

“Oh? Did you run into some trouble?” Heizou had to keep himself from visibly freezing.

“Not exactly. It’s just an old case with no tangible leads. But I believe your attuned sense of nature might allow us to discover some new clues.” Heizou smiled then, fondly for his friend. Kazuha gave him a look that he knew could see right through him.

“Sure. I can stay after the festival and we can go investigate together.”

“Great, thank you!” He couldn’t help the enthusiasm that bubbled within him, thrilled to spend more time with the samurai – thrilled that he would still not deny him of assistance.

“My pleasure, it’s no trouble at all.” After a long moment, Kazuha reached out a hand for Heizou. “Would you like to come to the festival?”

As much as the man wanted to snatch the hand up immediately and accept his offer, his hesitance was as clear as day. And there was no sense in hiding that from Kazuha. “Ah, well…I’m not sure about that. Festivals have never really been my thing.”

“Hm…” Kazuha thought for a moment. “In that case, how about we go somewhere else?”

“Kazuha! No way!” He shook his head, adamantly, now backing away from the other’s hand stretched out to him. Heizou would not take Kazuha from a fun opportunity, and from one where he could catch up with the traveler as well as other friends. Kazuha stepped right back into his space, composed as ever. Damn him, really.

“Ah, but…you are not planning to go to the festival? I would like to spend some time with you. I’ve already had my fill of excitement for the day. I could do with some more peaceful scenery now.”

Weakly, unsure, Heizou mustered all of his confidence into one nod. “Sure, if that’s what you want. Come spend time with this poor detective. I guess it can be my reward for a job well done, today.”

“I suppose so.”

Kazuha led the two back to Chinju Forest, gently grabbing onto Heizou’s hand to drag him along. “There is a spot, this way. Here we can still feel like we’re part of all the festivities.”

The consideration brought a smile to Heizou’s face. Chinju Forest had become comfortable to him these past few days. He’d come to appreciate the beauty the scenery had to offer. He observed Kazuha. If he had looked right at home under the warm red and oranges in Ritou, now was a complete contrast. And the thing is – he still looked ethereal to Heizou here, too.

He couldn’t help but mutter a signature, “Man alive…” under his breath as they settled down. He couldn’t believe Kazuha.

“Ah, pardon?” Kazuha asked, blinking. Of course, his ears picked up on everything. Heizou crossed his arms, feigning brattiness as he turned away.

“Oh, nothing,” Heizou replied plainly. Kazuha huffed out a laugh, apparently amused. Heizou smiled, turning back to him. They sat in silence for a moment and sure enough, Heizou could see everything from down below from where they sat. It was a comfortable enough distance, and a way to keep track of oncoming danger…

“So…about that case.” Kazuha was the one to break the silence, looking straight down at the festivities in fondness. Yoimiya had pulled Ayaka along to run with her to nothing really in particular, and Itto had begun showing the youkai his current prized onikabuto. It was a pleasant sight, a sentiment the two both could agree on.

“Mm…? What about it?” Heizou asked, staring forward as well. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure how far they’d get with this one. Heizou prided himself in cold cases, but this one was on a whim and usually they’d take a bit more time than the two probably had. He didn’t risk a glance at Kazuha, who easily knew far too much for his own good.

“Not that I mind, but…it seems you picked this one up quickly.” Kazuha continued. Bingo. Correct as ever, samurai. “Are you sure everything is alright?”

“Maybe…there might be some things on my mind. But they aren’t really important.” Heizou wasn’t ready to divulge what he had been reminded of just yet. His past loomed over him to this day, and he trusted Kazuha with his life. But…some information will take time. The other seemed to understand this, as well.

“I understand. Even the great detective has his moments, then.” Kazuha then fumbled for a moment, as if uncertain to continue. “It doesn’t seem like that’s all there is to it, though.”

“You would be right about that,” The detective confirmed, with a nod. He turned to face the other, who had already turned towards him as well. He was not as poetic by nature as Kazuha was, but Heizou could come up with thousands of ways to describe how he looked here and now and that wouldn’t even be enough. When I see something beautiful, I want to keep it that way. He sighed, at a loss. He could not ask any more of Kazuha. Seeing him like this enough was more than enough for him. But there was no getting past him, so the only move was to be honest. It was a game that Heizou has long since lost. Without a moment’s hesitation, he leaned forward and pressed his weight onto Kazuha in a long desired embrace. One that was quickly reciprocated by arms wrapping around him. “I’ve missed you a lot, Kazuha.”

Words that have been spoken between the two before, but with each time it feels more like desperation to understand the true meaning. The same was true for Kazuha, he realized. “I’ve missed you too, of course.” He could hear it, in his voice.

Would it make Kazuha happy, if, right now –

“Heizou, I think I love you.” Heizou could feel a heart beating erratically next to his ear. He could determine lies, falsehood, any deception. There was none to be had. His grip tightened around Kazuha. But he already knew that, of course.

“I love you too.” He couldn’t help but laugh, feeling silly now that the words have finally escaped his chest. Kazuha released him from a hug, only to gently cradle his face in his hands. Just like this, Heizou was certain this was all suddenly part of some devious plan to take out the cyclone. That Kazuha had been out to take him out this whole time, after all. He felt like his heart could burst.

“Heizou, I–”

“Don’t even think about saying it, Kazuha.” Heizou’s face, squished between two hands, frowned. He stuck his tongue out defiantly for just a moment. “I don’t want to hear it. No ‘I’ll stay’ or ‘I’ll be back more often’s. If you’re anything less than unapologetically you, then we can both just forget about it.”

Kazuha blinked at that, momentarily. He seemed to give it a moment of thought. Please, Heizou thought. I couldn’t even think to ever take your world from you.

Eventually, he finally settled on a quiet, “Okay.” Heizou’s heart filled with relief. This was all he’s ever wanted. It will be difficult – but Heizou’s heart would ache for Kazuha regardless, no matter the outcome of this situation. He loved him, and only him. It would make every moment together all the more worth it.

“Besides,” He grinned, wide. Surely, in Kazuha’s point of view he must look ridiculous right now. “Who said I wouldn’t be up for traveling every now and then? I could use a change of scenery. The cyclone is supposed to be known all throughout Teyvat, after all.” His dear wanderer looked as if he could cry tears of joy.

“Heizou, stop. I could kiss you right now.” Kazuha replied, and Heizou could finally feel the samurai's composure slipping. Was any of this actually real? The reality of the situation was finally catching up with him – and suddenly Heizou could also feel like he might be the one who ends up crying. He tried to look confident, but it was most difficult in this situation.

“I don’t see why you shouldn’t.” And without a moment’s hesitation, Kazuha leaned in and gently pressed their lips together. Heizou sighed contentedly, Kazuha’s hands on his face relenting just a little. It lasted far too little for Heizou, who immediately tried to steal more kisses the moment Kazuha had pulled away from him. “Hey! Why’d…why’d you stop?!”

“Um…I believe someone is coming,” Kazuha replied, and Heizou could see the light pink on his cheeks. He supposes that it is satisfactory enough for now.

“Oh, fair enough I guess,” Heizou responded, moving back so there would be an ample amount of space between them. He held his hand out. “Also…as for the details, we can figure it out as they come, yeah?”

Kazuha grabbed onto his hand, gratefully. “Of course. And when the time comes for you to travel with me, I believe I should bring you to Liyue first. There are many places I’ve always wanted to show you.”

“Kazuha! There you are!” Yoimiya waved, dragging Ayaka along with her. “And, is that detective Shikanoin too?”

The two greeted Yoimiya, who quickly announced her desire to put on a special fireworks show for the youkai they had all met during the test of courage. Heizou felt a bit out of place, interacting with those who had always had – understandable – suspicion of him, but he was welcomed as a friend. He assumed it was the kind of effect that Yoimiya had. Regardless, she needed help getting the fireworks there. So she had come to Kazuha for assistance. The two were dragged to Inazuma City to retrieve the fireworks and bring them back for her. Well, it seemed they had plenty of time to talk about things.

Heizou thought of traveling in Liyue with Kazuha. He’d finally get to see his weakness at its fullest force with his own two eyes. Finally.

And he was delighted to finally embrace it, the same way that Kazuha already had his own. Finally.
