Work Text:
I handed Mr. Porter the sheet of paper.
He took it gently and then turned over to his computer.
I waited eagerly as he entered everything in.
“Alright, Hannah. Your last few community service hours have gone through. Everything’s in order. Congratulations,” Mr. Porter said with a warm smile, as he looked up from his computer screen a few minutes later.
I relaxed my fingers.
“Well, alright! That’s great! Thank you,” I exclaimed, almost with disbelief that I’d made it this far.
Liberty High’s counselor smiled.
“You must be excited to be graduating from high school, and heading off to college,” he asked happily.
I chuckled softly with glee.
“I am, very much. And thank you, for everything,” I replied.
Mr. Porter smiled.
“You’re very welcome, Hannah.”
He took a breath before continuing.
“You’ve been through a lot. Academically, and more. I’m glad that you were able to overcome every hardship," Mr. Porter said candidly.
I nodded.
“I know it’s your job but I really couldn't have done it without your help. All of it, but especially the school part. A state school really isn’t bad at all,” I replied, as I thought back to the college visit.
Mr. Porter smirked happily.
“Not at all. Well, is there anything else I can do for you?”
I smiled and shook my head.
“No, that’s it for me. Thanks again for your help,” I said as I stood up and grabbed my bag.
Mr. Porter got up as well.
“Well, Hannah. Good luck on all your future endeavors."
He reached out his hand.
"I’ve had quite the time working with you, Hannah. You’ve got a bright future ahead of you,” he said.
“Thank you,” I replied, as I shook his hand with a bright smile.
"Take care, Hannah."
"You too, Mr. Porter."
I left the office and walked out of the school into the late afternoon sun with more of the sense of energy that I’d been feeling lately. It was a feeling that made me believe that anything was possible.
