Knock-Knock

Work Text:

Knock-knock.
"Come in!" Alice shouted. She wasn't going to leave the kitchen, and knew there was only one person who would be there so early.
"Mornin' Alice!" Marisa said, tossing her bag on the counter and sitting down at the kitchen table.
"Good morning, did you sleep well?"
"Eh, not really. Couldn't nod off last night."
“Mm, and why’s that?” Alice asked. She knew why, but had to hear Marisa say why.
“Eh? Oh, I drank too much coffee last night.” She laughed.
Alice smiled as she finished scrambling the eggs for breakfast.
“So I was right.” She said as she dumped the eggs into a pan.
“Well, I guess,” Marisa said. “Anyways, how was your night?”
“Oh, it was pleasant enough. Missed you at dinner though.”
It was a lie. That the evening was pleasant. Marisa had missed dinner. Marisa had no need to know of the terrors; however.
“Never said I was coming over,” Marisa grumbled.
“Well, that’s correct, but you usually come for dinner on Thursday,” Alice said. “I did make extra, so if you’d like to stick around for lunch you’re more than welcome.” She shifted the eggs around the pan, trying to keep them from burning.
“Sure, if you’ll have me.” She said.
“Of course,” She replied. She’d wanted to say something snarky, but her mind was slow this morning. “Eggs are done.”
“Huh, already? How hot were you cooking them?”
“Hot enough to be done quickly,” Alice replied, portioning out the eggs onto two plates.
“Hungry?” Marisa asked.
“No, I always cook my eggs this way.”
“Seems a bit... hasty,” Marisa said. “Thanks.” She accepted the plate offered to her.
“Marisa Kirisame is going to accuse me of being hasty.” Alice chuckled, sitting across the table from her guest.
“Hey! Listen, I may be hasty, but you can’t be like that when it comes to food.” She took a bite. “Too important to be careless about.” She said, shoveling more food down her gullet.
Alice said nothing. She wasn’t particularly hungry but had known Marisa would be. Why else bother with breakfast? After all, she had no need to eat, but it was only proper to feed-
“Hey, you listening?” Marisa asked, and knocked on the table.
“Oh, ah, sorry,” Alice said. She stretched her neck, then looked back at Marisa.
“Were you still talking about food?” She asked.
“Yeah. The eggs are pretty good.” Marisa said.
“Thank you.”
“Even if you were a bit hasty in making them.”
Alice glared at her, then grinned a little.
“Sounds like you’re lucky I didn’t burn them,” Alice said.
“Sure am!” Marisa laughed.

* * *

“So, how’s your day looking?”
“Terribly boring, by your standards.” She said, leading the way to the sitting room.
“So the usual?”
“Thereabouts,” Alice replied. “Would you like me to light the fireplace?”
“Eh, no. I won’t be here long enough for it to do me much good.”
“So you won’t be staying for lunch?”
“Nah. I’d love to, but I just realized my schedule for today is way too packed. I gotta see Reimu sometime before lunch.”
“Ah, I see.” She slumped down into her favorite armchair, and Marisa splayed herself across the couch opposite it.
“I’m sure I’ll run out of things to do before Sunday, so who knows? Maybe I’ll knock on the door after dark tomorrow to see if I can sleep in the guest room again?” Marisa said, staring out the window.
“I wouldn’t mind that,” Alice said. “Would you leave in the morning, or stick around?”
“Eh, probably stick around. The later I leave the later I get roped into doing things.”
“See you tomorrow,” Alice said as she walked with her to the door.
“Don’t remember saying I was swinging by tomorrow,” Marisa noted as she swung open the door.
“You will,” Alice said cheerfully.
Marisa stared at her for a moment, then smiled as she shut the door behind her.

Notes:

I wrote this to break myself out of an odd funk (not writer's block per se, but something weird like that). I haven't posted much work featuring these two, but I love them very much.

As always, thank you very much for reading. If you'd like to follow me elsewhere, you can find me on tumblr at
