Work Text:
“hanakooooo” nene called out into the open space of the bathroom.
the two had played this game for a while now. it was basically hide and seek, but nene always lost because hanako never played fair and always used his hakujoudai.
nene didn’t mind losing though, the look on hanako’s face always made up for how bitter she felt after being found so easily. he always looked so much more alive than he normally did.
he looked so happy, and not that she would admit it, but he looked very cute.
anyway, nene always looked in the bathrooms first. it was where they first met and where he had first saved her.
he was never in there, literally ever. but she liked to go and reminisce in there. she loved being around hanako. she loved how happy he got, she loved the fact that he always saved her. she loved everything about him. she loved him - in a totally platonic way of course, he definitely wasn’t her type.
she spent her time in the bathroom, and once she finally got enough, she left. calling out to hanako in hopes he’d show himself.
-
she finally found him, an hour later hiding in the library.
their games had never taken so long before, she always found him - well he always came out, she’s never actually found him- like 15 minutes in.
so for it to take this long was irritating to nene, she was ready to see him again. she almost missed him. as pathetic as that was, it had only been an hour. but nene missed hanako and she wanted to see him.
“hanako?” she whispered into the huge library, her voice echoing.
she would normally be a lot louder, but she was a little scared of mr. tsuchigomori and didn’t want him to yell at her today.
nene walked around, aimlessly. she couldn’t hear hanako. she couldn’t see him, she couldn’t even see the hakujoudai teasing her.
but he had to be in the library. she checked everywhere else. he absolutely had to be in here, nene was sure of it.
so she walked, and walked, and walked and walked and walked. when the hell did this library get so huge??
she walked until she heard a faint noise, and then she walked towards it. as she got closer, she could tell someone was crying.
and when nene yashiro turned the corner, she found no one other than hanako-kun of the toilets, bawling his eyes out.
-
“hanako?” she questioned quietly, walking slowly toward the boy.
he looked up at her and put on his best smile. he hadn’t been expecting her to find him so soon.
“oh, hey yashiro!” hanako smiled that smile at her. the one he always did when he was sad and didn’t want her to notice.
hanako was surrounded by the little pink mokke that had once tried to take over the school. they were frantically running around, grabbing things to offer to him.
“hanako..” nene trailed off, clasping her hands together shyly, “hanako, what’s wrong?” this was a whisper.
hanako would never ever admit any kind of weakness to nene. he would never want her to think of him differently. he didn’t want her to think of him as emotional.
plus, the reason he was crying was incredibly stupid. he was crying because this would be the last day he’d see nene before the christmas holiday. he was letting his emotions get the best of him.
the thing is, he knew she’d come and visit. he was just sad it wouldn’t be everyday like it would be if she were in school.
but, hanako didn’t know how to tell this to nene. this was dumb reason to cry. he was sure nene would tell him so, too.
“yashiro…” hanako trailed off, standing up.
he pulled nene into a tight hug. “i’m gonna miss you when you go off for break,” he whispered into her ear before letting her go.
-
nene was at her house, absolutely flustered.
hanako was gonna miss her?? did this mean he liked her???
he definitely WAS NOT her type so that would be insane!!!!
nene yashiro wasn’t sure of many things in her life, but she was sure that she did NOT like hanako. she was positive of it.
i mean she liked his smile, and the times he hugged her. she liked that time he kissed her on the cheek, even if it was protection. she liked his voice and-
nothing. she didn’t like anything. she was deluding herself into thinking these things, right?
-
it was 8 pm, and nene found herself running back to the school.
she felt so bad for leaving hanako after he told her that. she tried to invite him over right then and there but he politely declined, saying he didn’t belong anywhere but the bathroom.
but she couldn’t accept that, she wanted hanako to come to her house. she needed him to come over.
she went in through one of the schools many side entrances. and sprinted to the bathrooms.
“hanako?” she whispered for what felt like the hundredth time that day.
he appeared very slowly out of the bathroom stall. his face was puffy and his eyes red.
nene felt her heart wrench in her chest.
“hanako, come with me! come to my house, please. your break doesn’t have to be sad. it doesn’t have to be like this.” nene could’ve went on about this all night.
she wasn’t leaving without hanako, and she decided that a long time ago.
hanako looked around, and for some reason, he was speechless.
“okay, i’ll do it!” hanako’s face lit up. his eyes had that sparkle that nene loved and missed so much. it had been too long since she saw him like this
she grabbed his hand, and together they walked out the school.
-
hanako had been at nene’s house for two days and three nights now and he was absolutely loving it!
her house was so lovely, and her room was so cozy!! but the amount of pink and teal in her room was a tad concerning, so hanako made sure to tease her about it at least once a day.
hanako was so happy that nene came back for him. he could’ve kissed her in that moment! he was so grateful.
okay, maybe kissing her was a little out of hand. but still! he could’ve hugged her to death or something.
-
“yashiroooo,” hanako peered over nene as she slept. it was december 24th, christmas eve.
nene opened her eyes slowly, screaming as soon as she realized exactly who was standing - well floating - over her.
“HANAKO! YOU CANT SCARE A LADY AS SHE’S SLEEPING!” nene launched her nearest pillow at him, missing.
hanako laughed, teasing nene. he then grabbed the pillow and chucked it back at her, hitting her square in the face.
nene was red with anger. she was furious, she was steaming. she clutched her pillow and locked in on hanako, then she winded up, and threw it with full force.
she watched as it flew across her room. she was sure it was gonna knock him right out the air
until he moved to the side at the last second.
“HANAKOOOOOOOO!!!” nene yelled ferociously.
-
it was a couple hours later, and nene and hanako were at kou minamoto’s house. she got over her fit extremely fast.
gathered there was kou, hanako, nene, and mitsuba.
kou was hosting a christmas eve party. mainly for the ghosts, since they probably didn’t get to do stuff like that anymore.
“hey toilet-breath! hi nene!” he shouted when he opened the door.
“hi minamoto!” nene answered back with her best smile.
she took in the scene before her. kou’s house was huge!!! everything was nice and polished and he had a huge chandelier. he was rich! he just had to be
“your house is very… meh,” hanako said, sticking his tongue out and breaking nene out of her thoughts.
she just stared blankly at the two, who seemed like they were about to get into (another) fight.
“so!” she clapped her hands together before they could start swinging. “any games?”
they played games such as uno, and trouble. they played one incredibly long round of monopoly. they played games on kou’s computer and nene found out that she was quite fond of sims 4.
-
soon, the clock was about to strike 11 and nene knew she had to go soon or else her parents would be through the roof mad.
“sorry minamoto, hanako and i have to go. if i’m not home in the next second my mom’s gonna kill me.”
“you guys are good. merry christmas!” kou had a mischievous smile on his face. but nene couldn’t tell what he was up to.
-
hanako and nene were walking out of kou’s huge house, with nene admiring it on the way out.
she opened the door and walked out. she was able to get a few steps away when she noticed that hanako wasn’t behind her and he was still standing at the open door.
“hanako! come onnn, my parents will get upset!” she whisper-shouted.
“wait, yashiro, come here!” he whisper shouted back.
she walked back to him, slightly irritated. what could be so interesting at the door?
she was standing with him, waiting for him to say anything.
“hana-“ nene started
“yashiro, look up” hanako cut her off.
nene looked up and saw one single piece of mistletoe hanging over the door.
it was hanging over the door that she was standing under.
it was hanging over the door that she was standing under with hanako.
her face was red as a tomato.
“can i?” hanako whispered, bringing his hand up to her cheek.
nene couldn’t do anything but nod. this is what kou was hiding?
hanako leaned in.
nene leaned in.
and the two kissed. it was like fireworks went off in nene’s body.
she was happy. she was beyond happy that her first kiss was with hanako.
he pulled away and smiled at her, “you’re not too bad at kissing yashiro.”
“HANAKO, YOU DON’T SAY THAT TO A LADY AFTER HER FIRST KISS!!”
but hanako just chuckled and leaned in to kiss her again.
