Work Text:
David had just come home from work, tired. The job he worked had been a hassle, Milo had to break up a fight between two people, an air elemental and an earth elemental. The fight was over something stupid, nothing he thought was really worth fighting over. Once they got that settled it randomly started to rain, which had the job cut short. All David wanted to do now was lay down with his Angel, and possibly order take out, because he wasn’t in the mood for cooking anything—Which was something that only happened on occasion. The universe, however, had other plans for him, as upon walking into his house he was presented with a sleeping Angel—which in itself is not something he hasn’t seen before, but what was strange was that Angel had wings.
8 to be exact.
Two smaller wings on their head, wrapped around to cover their eyes, and 6 on their back, the pair in the middle being the biggest while the other two were slightly smaller. The pair of wings in the middle of their back was wrapped around their frame, covering them like a blanket.
He didn’t know what to say, or do. He wanted to wake them up and ask what the hell was going on, but he also wanted to figure out why they never said anything. From all of his knowledge on the magical world, Angels were never in the history books, or ever claimed to be seen by anyone but crazy people. But here one was, sleeping on the couch in his living room.
When his (Literal) Angel started to stir in their sleep, probably realizing David had come home, he started to panic. He didn’t know how to question them on this new appearance they have taken up, let alone confront them about keeping it a secret from him for 3 years.
When they started to open their eyes, he stood there frozen. He couldn’t stop staring at them. Their wings started to uncover their body, revealing one of David's shirts and a pair of shorts. Their eyes opened fully and they saw him standing there, they smiled.
“Welcome home love, how was work?” They asked, voice raspy from just waking up. When David didn’t answer, Angel looked at him confused. Why was he just standing there not saying anything? “Did something happen?” They asked. “Why are you just standing in the doorway?” They sat up, a concerned look on their face. At that point, he registered he hadn’t been saying anything. The sight before him left him speechless but he wouldn’t get any answers for the questions running through his head, if he just stood there like a deer in headlights. He started to walk towards them, gesturing to them to scoot over so he could sit. “Explain.” Was all that could come out of his mouth.
“What do you mean?” They said looking more confused than before.
“The wings.”
“What win-” They said as they looked back slightly, realizing that their wings were on full display for David to see. “Oh….Oh”
“Well…uhm..” Angel was at a loss for words. David wasn’t supposed to find out, not like this at least. They still had a week before they were allowed to tell him. “An-”
“Before you say anything! I promise I was going to tell you, I just had to wait for the right time.” Angel tried to explain. “I’m not mad that you tell me I just..” David said, trying to find the right words to describe the emotions going through his head. “I wasn’t expecting to come home to a…literal angel.” He stared at their wings, trying to figure out if he was dreaming or if he was awake.
Once he came to the conclusion that he in fact was not dreaming, the questions in his head got louder. Many of them consisted of trying to figure out how Angels were actually real. Others wanted to know why they kept a secret this big from him for 3 years.
“I have a few questions.” He said, staring at them. He wanted to ask the biggest question he had of the many. The one that would help him understand why they hid something so big from him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was going to but, I’m not exactly allowed to” They explained. “It’s kind of like how you explained the magic world to me, and how you couldn’t tell unempowered people without going through a bunch of paperwork and that 8 hour class. With…Angels like me we are sworn to secrecy. We aren’t allowed to tell unless we have the proper permission, and getting that permission is extremely hard.”
David sat and listened as they explained why they couldn’t tell him, and why they could get in trouble for him now knowing about it. “With you knowing about it now, I can get in trouble. I’m still in the process of getting permission and if they find out that you found out before they granted it to me… I-I don’t want to say what could happen.” They said, looking away from him. The sad look on their face gave David an idea that what would happen wouldn’t be good. He knew how hard it was to get permission from the department to tell an unempowered person about the magical world, but from the way Angel looked, the consequences of him knowing without them having permission to tell him made him want to forget he even saw anything.
“What will happen if they find out I know?” He asked, offering his hand to them. He could almost smell how anxious they were about the subject. Tears brimmed their eyes as they took his hand and started running their thumb on his knuckles. “Well for one, they would completely erase any memory of me from your mind, and anybody else who knows me. And then I would be stripped of my wings for 2 centuries and banned from coming to Earth for 4.”
That answer shocked David. The punishment for that was much worse than anything the department would have done when it comes to breaching covert. He wondered if Angel ever had to go through that, or witness it happen to any other Angels they know.
When David realized he hadn’t said anything, he spoke again.“I won’t tell anyone about it until you're ready, and have the proper permission for me to do so. Will they figure out I know before you get the go-to, to tell me?” He asked. They were on the verge of crying at this point. “I hope not. They don’t normally check until the end of each month but, I don’t know… there's always a possibility they might check earlier than normal.” They said as David pulled them into a hug, and started rubbing circles in their back. The gesture by itself was enough to comfort Angel in ways that other people couldn’t. “I’m sure they won’t find out, as long as you are granted permission before the end of the month. Do you know when it will be given to you?” He asked, trying to see if there was a way they could avoid that punishment. “About a week. I would have told you a lot sooner but the waiting list is long, a lot of us want to tell humans who don’t know.” They kissed the back of his hand and looked up at him. He wiped the tears from their eyes and kissed the back of their hand in return.
“No matter what or who you are, I will always love you Angel. Never forget that”
“I love you too David. And thank you for not…freaking out.” Once Angel calmed down a little bit, they cloaked their wings and offered to tell David more about angels, in hopes to help him understand them a little bit more than he already did.
After hours of talking, and David learning a little more about Angels, David decided to order take out and put on a Movie. By the time they had eaten and the movie was over Angel was asleep, curled up next to David. He turned off the tv and picked them up, carrying them to the bedroom. They stirred slightly when he placed them onto the bed, but quickly went back to whatever dream they were having. Once he got settled into the bed he curled up to their back side and kissed their cheek.
“Goodnight my Angel”
When they woke up the next morning, they continued their normal weekend routine. They cuddled for a while after waking up before David decided they needed to get up to eat. On their way to the kitchen, Angel vaguely mentioned that they don’t need to eat human food to survive, and that they don’t survive off anything but pure instinct. David just rolled his eyes and told them they should eat something anyway while starting up on the eggs.
Angel took it upon themselves to wrap their arms around David’s waist while he cooked the both of them breakfast.
“Did you know that an Angel wrapping their wings around someone is a sign of affection?” They asked, decloaking their wings and wrapping a pair around his legs. “No I didn’t, I recall not knowing more than one angel existed before yesterday.” Turning around as he said it, he picked them up by the waist and placed them on the counter.
They unwrapped their wings from his legs and cloaked them again. They sat in peaceful silence, the sound of bacon sizzling on a pan being the only noise in the kitchen. Angel briefly wondered what would have happened if anyone from their homeland found out that David knew they were an Angel before they were given the go-to, but that thought quickly passed through their mind. They wondered what their life would have been like if they hadn’t met David or the pack. Their life wasn’t boring before they met him but it definitely got better than it was once he came into their life—Almost like he was the angel who came into their life rather than the other way around.
Once the food was done they sat down to eat at the table, making small talk while they ate. Their conversation mostly consisted of more things David should know about Angels. They didn’t want to overwhelm him with too much information at once so they took it slow with answering his questions. They tried to give as much detail as they could while also keeping it so what they were saying wasn’t too confusing to understand. Once the food was finished, David put the plates in the sink, saying he would wash them after he made dinner later.
The pair went to the couch and started watching a shitty reality Tv show Angel had recently gotten into.
“You know, a lot of Angels back on celesti act like the people here. I watch these because it reminds me of home, even if this isn’t exactly how many would want to remember it.” They laughed, staring at the Tv screen. They didn’t notice the way David looked over at them and smiled–happy that they have good memories of their homeland. His thoughts shifted to their age. The previous night, they had mentioned that human years were different from angel years–something about 1 earth year is 16 celestial years. His thoughts then shifted to how old Angel could be, from his current knowledge, they were around 26 years old, which meant in angel years they were 416 years old. That was close to the age of the Solaire king.
“Time moves slower in the celestial plane, which is why a year on earth is 16 years there.” He recalls them saying. They also mentioned only coming to earth 10 years ago, meaning they had been away from home for 160 years. He shortly wondered why they left in the first place before putting his attention back onto the show that he and Angel had been watching.
After a while Angel told David a few stories of his siblings, about how they used to get into constant fights over stupid things just like the girls in the show they were watching. “One time we got into a physical fight over who was going to drink the last bit of orange juice. It was the only thing we had from the human world and we wanted to make it last because at the time our parents didn’t allow us to leave Celesti often. We were arguing at first and then my brother just started swinging on my other brother!” They exclaimed, gesturing what happened with their hands. “I tried to break up the fight but then I was pulled into it, so it was me, my brother, and my other brother just going at eachothers throats. Our parents had to break up the fight and said they would split the orange juice into three cups, which did not make either of my brothers happy. But in the end we all got orange juice!” David smiled, trying to imagine a younger version of Angel getting into an argument over orange juice.
It seemed like something Asher and Milo would have done when they were 7. “Did that happen often?” David asked, rubbing small circles in their side. “Not really, I mean we got into a lot of verbal fights but they rarely led to anything physical, our parents normally got in the middle before it could escalate.” Angel recalled the time their brothers got into a fight over who was better at flying and their parents had to physically hold them back. “We were rowdy kids.” They laughed. The pair went into a peaceful silence, occasionally making comments on the show.
It was afternoon when David decided to get up and do a little bit of work before Monday, so he would have it a little easier when he went into work. Angel decided to grab their switch from the coffee table and start running minecraft. They had started building the bridge on the island they built their house on. David had made a comment about it being better for them to live on an island for defense reasons. They countered by telling him they could defend perfectly fine on normal land, but still liked the idea of an island house. They ended up falling asleep on the couch in the middle of playing. The sight of Angel slumped over the side of the couch with their switch in their hand made his heart swell. He walked over and gently took the switch from their hand, shutting it off before picking them up like he did the previous night and taking them to bed. It was still too early to make dinner and he doubted Angel would wake up anytime soon, so he decided he would order takeout one more night.
His Angel deserved it after all.
