it started as a monthly thing. where dazai would give a little medal to his favorite orphan. aku got so mad n bc sibling competitivness it became a huge thing - every month dazai would award his favorite orphan and whoever got the most awards per month would win the year award.

dazai used to do orphan of the year awards in the pm. everytime he chose gin or himself. he still does it in the ada, so far only ranpo has won but atsushi is coming in at a close second.
