Work Text:

This was it. The Rogue Avengers were really coming back. Today was gonna suck.

It had been a long time since Steve had seen Tony. Civil War, as the press was calling it, had been an absolute mess and the fight in Siberia had definitely made things worse. Tony hadn’t used the phone that Steve had sent, yet here they were. Pardoned.

Steve was happy to finally be home and was ready to hear Tony’s apology. Hopefully the man hadn’t drunk himself to death.

/

Tony paced back and forth across the compounds communal floor. The Rogues were coming.

Sure, it’s wasn’t like it was a surprise to Tony. I mean hell, he was the one who had fought tooth and nail with Ross about this, but none of that was relevant right now.

When Tony got the Rogues pardoned he didn’t think he would be forced to house them. Steve’s apartment in Brooklyn was still open, he’d checked, and of course the other Rogues could’ve made arrangements else where. However Ross had made it a mandatory condition, something about having “more than enough space” or something, Tony wasn’t really listening.

It wasn’t like Tony would be alone though. Rhodes was coming later to help out with this whole situation.

“Boss” Friday announced unknowingly startling her boss “The Rogues are on their way up.” Right, Tony didn’t have time to panic, so he slid on a pair of sunglasses and waited.

/

The elevator doors opened to revel the Rogue Avengers. Steve, Bucky, Sam, Natasha, and Wanda. Clint and Scott were both on house arrest.

“Welcome back.” Tony looked nonchalant on the outside but on the inside he was freaking the hell out.

“It’s good to be back.” Steve was the first to step forward and the others followed. Sam, Bucky, and Wanda looking wary of Tony. As if he was the one in the wrong.

“Right, well FRIDAY will be able to help you find your rooms and answer any questions you have. Anything else? No? Good. I’ll be-“
“Actually,” of course it was the Captain who had cut him off. “I was wondering if we could talk?”

Tony took a deep breath. “Sure. FRIDAY set up a date-“ Once again Tony is cut off by Mr. Stars and Stripes himself. “Tony, I meant now.” While he may not have said it in a commanding voice, it certainly felt like one.

“Sure.” Tony felt trapped. He took a deep breath. Prepared to grin and bare it.

Today was a good day. Peter had actually gotten to school on time for once and he got a good grade on an assignment that was passed back. Between that and Flash leaving him alone (after MJ threatened to kick him in the balls and shove his food down his own throat).

All in all, it was pretty good day. And seeing as today was Friday, he got to spend the whole weekend with Mr. Stark. They were currently working on making Peter’s Spider-man suit a bit more fire resistant. There had been an incident while he was on patrol.

Anyway, after school Happy had picked hm up and dropped him off at the compound. Peter had talked the whole ride about his day and what he and Mr. Stark we’re going to be working on that weekend.
Happy could pull a grumpy face all he wanted, but Peter knew he enjoyed their rides together (Mostly because he hadn’t put up the divider.)

When Peter arrived at the compound FRIDAY greeted him as usual. “Good afternoon Mini boss.” Peter smiled “Afternoon FRIDAY. Is Mr. Stark in the lab?” He looked up at the ceiling despite not knowing where FRIDAY’s cameras were. “No, I’m afraid Boss is on the communal floor with the Rogue Avengers.” Peter’s brow furrowed in a combination of confusion and worry.

“Hold on, the Rogue Avengers? You mean the guys who betrayed him?” Peter asked cautiously, awaiting FRIDAY’s answer. “Yes, Boss had them pardoned.”

“FRIDAY communal floor please!” Peter felt a rush of anxiety as the elevator began to move.

Now, Peter hadn’t meant to see the footage from Siberia, however while fixing his web shoooters, he had spotted the mangled suit in the back corner of the lab.

He had wanted to see what had done that to the suit and there were no protocols in FRIDAY’s system that prevented him from watching the footage. So, Peter watched, Peter watched as the Winter Soldier killed Mr. Stark’s parents. Peter watched as the shield was plunged into Mr. Starks arc reactor. Peter saw red.

And at the moment Peter was seeing red again as the elevator ascended to the communal floor.

/

Tony was anxious. He was sitting in front of the two men who had tried to kill him and the woman who betrayed him.

“Okay Stark, I understand you were angry at the time, but Bucky was under mind control back then. I need you to understand that it’s HYDRA to blame for your parents deaths, not Bucky.” Steve stared at Tony with a steel gaze as the man stared at the elevator.

“Tony are you even listening?” Steve questioned as Tony’s leg began to bounce.

“Nope,” he said with an audible pop to the p. “Are we done now cause I’m pretty sure there some papers Pepper wanted me to-“

“Stark! I’m trying to be considerate here, but you make it extremely hard to sympathize with you when you won’t even listen to me!” Steve was getting impatient as Tony refused to hear his reasons for deserving an apology. In Steve’s mind this was the man who had tried to kill his best friend. Tony sat a bit frozen as Steve glared at him.

He was going to let Steve continue when the elevator doors opened.

At first Tony thought it was Rhodey, here to save his ass, but then a certain Spider-kid emerged from the elevator instead.

Tony’s eyes widened. He had forgotten to cancel his weekend with Peter. Or tell him about the Rogues.

/

Peter was lived. Who did they think they were that they could just come to the tower and intimidate Mr. Stark!?

“What the hell are you all doing here?” The Rogues looked at him confused. Natasha was the first to cool her expression.

Peter continued “Did you think you could just come here after what you did and be forgiven!? Seriously?! Just like that? Well do I have news for you, nobody and I mean NOBODY tries to kill my mentor and then force their way back into his life!” Peter’s face was red and his fist were clenched ready for a fight.

The Rogues looked shocked and confused, except for Steve and Bucky who looked rightfully guilty.

“Um, Pete, Buddy that was real sweet, but I was the one who got the Rogues pardoned.”

Peter then turned to his father figu- MENTOR! Mentor. “What!?”

Tony put a smile on his face “I got them pardoned Underoos. Had the accords revised and everything.” Peter felt his face get even redder.

“Did you want to?” Peter asked him. Mr. Stark’s fake smile fell quickly.

“Kid- ” Tony started. Peter cut him off. “No! Tony, did you want to pardon the Rogues?”

Tony didn’t say anything for a bit. He took his glasses off and looked only at Peter. He sighed “Yes, I did.” Peter looked at him like he was crazy. “But-” Tony cut him off. “No, Peter I did- I do want the Rogues pardoned. I just didn’t think I would be forced to interact with them for while. I thought I would have time to- look it doesn’t matter. The world needs the Avengers, so we’ll just have to move past what happened and work as a team again.”

Peter couldn’t believe this. Tony shouldn’t have to work with a team he couldn’t trust. He turned to the Rogues then. “You all should be ashamed of yourselves.” Tony looked like he was going to interrupt, but stopped himself. He was kinda curious about what the kid was gonna say.

“What you two did to Mr. Stark in Siberia is just despicable. Two super soldiers fighting one guy in a titanium alloy suite with a vibranium shield isn’t fair. Then to put the shield through his arc reactor, which you know powers the suit, and leave him for dead is not what teammates do. You left him for dead in Siberia!” Peter was red in the face. Tony was as shell shocked as the Rogues.

Tony sighed, pushed up his glasses and walked over to his kid. “Well this has been a very enlightening day and we will see all of you later.” And with that Tony wrapped his arm around Peter and directed him towards the elevator.

/

The doors closed behind them as Tony told FRIDAY to take them up to the lab. Tony looked at Peter. The kid had his head down and arms crossed over his chest. The tips of his ears were red. Tony sighed and rubbed a hand down his face.

“Peter-” The kid turned towards him “I’m so sorry Mr. Stark! I just got so mad when FRIDAY told me you were with the Avengers and when I saw you and you looked so uncomfortable and they were all sitting on one side like they were ganging up on you and I couldn’t stand it! And I know I shouldn’t have looked at the footage from Siberia, but the suit just looked awful and I was worried-” Tony decided to cut the kid off so he could breath.

“Peter I’m not mad. Exhausted? Sure. But kid, I-” he sighed “thank you. You didn’t have to stand up for me like that.” Peter uncrossed his arms and started at Tony like a confused puppy.

“Mr. Stark you gave me a cool suit, let me make stuff in your lab, help when I’m injured, kept aunt May from freaking out about the spider-maning and so much more. The least I could do is get you out of a room with a bunch of jerks.” Peter smiled. Tony smiled back.

“Alright, let’s go fix up that suit of yours so you can get back out there. Falling in more dumpsters for the sake of Queens.” Peter glared at him which made Tony laugh.

Maybe today wouldn’t suck as much as Tony thought.

Notes:

Wow. I actually finished something. I wrote this like a while ago and just edited it in a restaurant.
