The song came as Rose was working. Without even thinking, the music flowed from her lips. She laughed as she recognized what it was: a popular drinking song from her own home planet of Hays Minor.
She’d taught it to Kaydel not long after they’d met. The first time she’d sung it, she’d cried, not having heard the song since she’d left, but then, Kaydel had started singing with her even without knowing the words, and it had changed both of their lives forever. Suddenly, the song had an entirely different meaning.
It had always been on Rose’s mind that her soulmate was out there somewhere. As a young child, she’d tried to use the songs that she sometimes started singing without prompting as clues, but by the time Kaydel sang along with her that day, Rose had mostly given up on that.
That day she learned that the popular saying was true: When you stopped looking for things, they had a habit of falling into your lap.
She shook her head fondly. Later, she would tease Kaydel about the song choice over dinner, but they’d both laugh until Kaydel kissed the last of Rose’s protests away.
They both knew the truth. The song was from Rose’s past, but it was also theirs. Rose could never be sad when she heard it.
