Work Text:

“Remind me why we couldn’t portkey again?” Draco whispered, clutching Harry’s hand and eyeing the plane outside the window with fear.

“Because otherwise it’s a multi-hour drive to the Muggle neighborhood Hermione’s parents are in,” Harry said, “and they’re already planning to meet us at the airport, which is much closer to their house.”

Draco clenched his jaw. “And you’re sure it’s safe?”

Harry snorted. “Much safer than my motorbike you love so much. You were wary of that, too, remember?”

Draco raised an eyebrow. “You wearing your leather jacket was a big incentive.”

Harry smirked. “Alright, well, you got used to it anyway. And you’ll get used to this. This is one of the safest Muggle modes of transportation. I promise.”

Draco nodded, but didn’t reply, and Harry used his free hand to rub soothingly up and down Draco’s back.

Their flight was called for boarding, and Harry had to hand the boarding agent both of their passes, but they made it to their seats without much hassle. At first, Draco sat in the window seat, but the moment he looked out and saw the wing he insisted on switching with Harry in favor of the aisle, because “If I see us in the air, Potter, I’m not responsible for what happens next.”

Harry frowned. “But we fly on brooms all the time. This is much safer than that.”

“Yes, but I’ve got control over that, haven’t I?” Draco huffed. “And besides, I’ve got magic. What does this have?”

Harry purses his lips and shrugged. “Science, I guess.”

Draco looked at him, unimpressed, and Harry chuckled. “It’s the closest things Muggles have to magic.”

Draco sighed and leaned back in his seat. “Potter, if we die here, I’m going to kill you.”

Harry patted his hand where it rested on the arm of the chair. “Whatever you say, love.”

It took a while for the plane to finish boarding. Then, Draco watched attentively while the flight attendant demonstrated safety protocols, his knuckles white against the seat arm.

Finally, the plane started to move. Draco’s stomach flipped, and Harry leaned over, whispering comfort in his ear. “It’s alright, my love. You’re not in danger. You’re safe. We both are. This is how it’s meant to be.”

There was another plane in front of theirs, and Draco watched it take off into the sky. His stomach twisted as it became airborne. He looked at Harry, who smiled reassuringly.

Draco’s breath hitched as the plane got into position. It started going faster, and faster, until Draco noticed the front was starting to lift off the ground. The rest of the plane followed, and Draco knew they were flying.

Suddenly, the plane started tilting, riding bumpily. Draco gasped and looked at Harry, alarmed.

“This is called turbulence,” Harry whispered, “it happens during take off, and sometimes during the flight, but it’s totally normal. We’re not crashing. We’re fine.”

Draco squeezed Harry’s hand and nodded, closing his eyes.

Finally, the plane evened out. Draco let out a deep breath, and Harry grinned at him.

“Look at you, love, you did it,” Harry kept his voice low. “See? Nothing you can’t handle.”

Draco have him a small smile. The plane had leveled into a smooth ride, and he no longer felt panicked. “Thanks for helping me through it.”

“Of course, baby. Anytime. Every time.” And his expression was so besotted and soft that Draco couldn’t help but kiss him.

The plane shook a bit during the kiss, and Draco pulled back slightly. “Harry, you’re wonderful and all, and hopefully correct that we’re not going to die in this mental device. But if we do—I’m going to kill you.”

Harry chuckled and pressed a kiss to his forehead. “I know, love. I know.”
