Never Again

Summary:

At the start of the competition, Red muses on White's participation, his amnesia and his loyalties.

Notes:

I binged this game over the holidays and fell in love, so here's a small contribution to the fandom!

Work Text:

Red stood atop the nearby building, watching White breeze through his mission, destroying demons like it was second nature.

It was impressive, she had to admit. He hadn’t always been the strongest of them, but after a few years of being Green’s favorite, his skills had been honed to entirely new levels; as sick as she was of all the killing, it was always a feat to watch him work- not that she’d tell him that.

To say he was fast was an understatement- he practically flew over the strange buildings and waterways. Even the Soul Cards, which took Red a few tries to get the hang of, were being tossed around as if he’d used them his whole life.

Whether he remembered his time as an assassin or not, it didn’t change that he moved and thought like one; a part of his being so essential that he couldn’t lose it even in the throes of amnesia.

It made Red a little nervous, honestly. She’d have felt more comfortable if White was fumbling through this mission, killing no demons at all.

(She’d make sure he wouldn’t die, anyway. Even if this year didn’t wind up changing anything, it was still ten more days they had together. White had never shown up before, and he wouldn’t have even surfaced without her help. There was a real chance he’d never show up again.

She had to savor this extra time.)

If White lost his memories and his instincts, he’d be no threat. Red, Violet and Yellow would all be safe with no worries, and they could carry on as normal.

But, with his instincts intact, then… there was a chance White’s inherent loyalties were intact as well, without memories of the consequences that arose from them.

He knew Red. Sure, he could recognize all of them, to some extent, but he knew her, even if he didn’t know how . She had to admit she was flattered when he’d said he felt the strongest connection to her out of everyone.

But that was only because he hadn’t yet seen Green, and if he felt strongly towards Red, there was a real chance that White would feel even more drawn to him.

She grit her teeth at the thought.

Below her, White dashed through demons and a door in the same motion, swiping his sword to kill the demon on the other side in a split second.

Ever the skilled killer, his rank would skyrocket in days. If Green hadn’t noticed White was here yet, he would soon.

She refused to watch Green wrap White around his finger again- refused to watch her partner become a loyal lapdog for that monster a second time.

She’d keep White focused on her, Yellow and Violet, and do her damnedest to squash any hint of curiosity over Green.

Below, White completed his mission in record time. Red turned around.

She’d best to get back to work, too. If she could outperform him, maybe she could buy some time.

She ziplined back to her assignment, red hair whipping behind her violently.

She wasn’t going to lose him, not again, not this time.

They’d beat Green. She’d beat Green.

She’d make sure of it, no matter the cost.
