Work Text:

"I am a mercenary. I do not need anyone. My work does not have love or friendship. And yet, whenever I think of you..."

Just another lonely day. Most of your time is spent alone or working with some of the less dangerous abnormalities. Perhaps you'd be lucky enough to get a chance to work with Red.

Your first meeting with her wasn't on the best terms. You had dragged yourself in through her door just as the rabbits turned up, begging her to let you stay until the alarms outside stopped blaring and the rabbits left. Even though she looked annoyed at the time, she let you stay.

You're still grateful for that.

"I don't know why I let you stay. You looked so pitiful, limping in with tears running down your face. I am not a hospitable person. I live to kill. But for a moment, I decided to be kind for once. I wonder if you still remember what I did for you.

Yesterday, I dreamt about you.

I woke up in tears."

While some people glanced at you, nobody seemed to question why you were carrying a rug around. It wasn't just any rug, though. Sure, it wasn't made from a real wolf, (and it was too big to come from any wolf) but it was definitely high quality enough to be good either way.

Red seemed pleased when you entered the room. You nervously unfurled the rug and placed it upon the floor.

"Your room looks just like all the others. I thought it would look nicer with this rug," you explained.

She took some time to examine it, before laying down onto the soft rug.

"I wasn't assigned to work with you today, so I'll have to go-"

"Don't."

You turned to look at Red.

"I want you to stay."

Not like you could oppose her wishes, anyways. You sat down in front of her. For a while, neither of you said anything.

"I dreamt about you last night. I don't remember what happened, but it was the first time in years that I woke up sobbing. I want you to stay with me for tonight. I don't want to wake up like that again."

You weren't really sure what to say about that. You just shuffled closer to her, not wanting to make any sudden movements.

Yet without warning, she pulled you into an embrace. She had given you those brief pat-on-the-back hugs before, but this was the first time she really held you. Once the shock wore off, you spoke.

"I guess I could stay for tonight. But someone might look for me."

Red sighed. "It doesn't matter if someone looks for you. I just want you to stay here."

You just wrapped your arms around her in response.

It didn't take long for you to fall asleep after that.
