Work Text:

Ayaka’s heart was beating fast against her rib cage while she clung onto the strap of her bag with sweaty hands. It was hard to focus on her steps when Lumine walked that close next to her, holding the umbrella over both of them. Their shoulders brushed against each other more often than not, and neither Lumine nor Ayaka spoke. The rain broke the silence between them for the first meters.

Many things ran through Ayaka’s mind at the same time, so she wasn’t able to form a clear mind to say anything. No words seemed to fit what she wanted to get out of her system. Only quickly she managed to send Thoma a message that she was out with Lumine, and she wouldn’t come home too late for her piano lesson. “I’m sorry,” she said eventually.

Lumine stole a quick glance of Ayaka. “Sorry for what?”

Ayaka pressed her lips into a thin line, thinking for the right words. “That I never noticed your true intentions whenever you asked me out before.” At no time it has occurred to her that Lumine tried to ask her out on a date. Even she knew about her own feelings, she suppressed them. Lumine was her first friend, and she was afraid to lose her with those feelings.

Trying her hardest, Ayaka kept the memories of visiting the aquarium and zoo with Lumine as a friendship thing. The exchange of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, something they do because they are friends, the same way she gave Thoma and Ayato chocolate.

Lumine chuckled. “Don’t worry about that.” She bumped against Ayaka. “That means I can invite you to everything again to make it count as a date.” A light pink appeared on her cheeks, and she intertwined her hands with Ayaka’s, squeezing it gently. “You’re sweating.”

Ayaka’s heart skipped a beat. She wanted to pull her hand away because she was embarrassed about her sweaty hand joining Lumine’s, but the grip was so firmly, yet so warm that she couldn’t do it. It felt reassuring. “You’re always so calm and collected, having the right words ready.”

For a moment, Lumine was at a loss for words. “Aether would say the opposite if he was here. But from now on, you have to look closer to me to see me, okay?” Before Ayaka could answer, Lumine stopped in front of a shield. “We are here!” She pointed at the advertisement on the wooden piece. “It’s called Sakura Stellar.”

“Oh,” Ayaka leaned over to get a better look, “I never heard of it despite it being super close to our school.” Which wasn’t surprising, as her free time was very limited.

“Yeah, it’s a new café and because it’s behind the huge mall, nobody sees it.” Lumine sounded a little bit sad about it. “And with the rain, probably nobody comes today.”

Ayaka was only able to hear her own heartbeat over the rain. Nobody was around them, she didn’t notice because her focus was utterly elsewhere. She was alone with Lumine.

“Ayaka?” Lumine asked. “Don’t you want to go inside?”

Surprised, Ayaka looked at Lumine. “Ah–I–” With the newest realization, she couldn’t handle her nervousness anymore. “It’s really mutual, huh?” She whispered, yet Lumine heard her.

“It is.” Lumine squeezed Ayaka’s hand again, shifted her body a little bit, and leaned in to kiss Ayaka. Clumsy and brief, an innocent first kiss to make sure, Ayaka wouldn’t misunderstand her intentions again.

With the warmth of Lumine’s lips, Ayaka melted.

 Feeling all fuzzy and fluffy.
