Sleepless Nights

Summary:

A short story about why Melli can’t sleep at night. Modern AU.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

“The ride has reached its final destination!” a voice announces.

It manages to break through his sleepy stupor, but isn't enough to fully rouse him.

“Hey, get up!” the same voice says, much less officially and much less friendlier.

A hand shoves at his shoulder which manages to fully rouse him. A familiar but smiling face is peering down at him, though the smile is tinged with annoyance.

Melli grumbles and rubs the sleep from his eyes.

“Do you treat all your passengers like this?”

“Just you,” Emmet says, irritated.

And honestly, Melli can’t exactly blame him for being a bit annoyed. Even before he began dating this man’s twin brother, Melli was always a regular on the Subway. Though not much of a battler he would ride the Subway Boss’ clout for influencer attention. It was partly due to them that he even became the huge e-celeb that he is today.

But lately he’s been falling asleep throughout the entire journey. In fact, being in a noisy, rattling train surrounded by commuters going about their daily business and also frequent Pokemon battles, it was still somehow quieter than sleeping in his own bed.

And falling asleep and taking up valuable seating space during the work rush was kinda rude. He admits that–though only internally. He can never give Emmet even an inch.

“I didn’t get much sleep last night,” or any night, he explains.

“I don’t wanna hear it!” Emmet bursts.

“Don’t want to hear about what?” Ingo inquires as he approaches the pair.

“My sleepless nights,” Melli whines.

Not that,” Emmet insists.

But Ingo seems fully aware of the topic. “I can’t apologise enough! I’m so very sorry, Melli! Truly!”

Emmet looks at his brother with wide eyes.

“You say that every morning,” Melli huffs and folds his arms.

Emmet’s eyes move to Melli.

“I’m trying my hardest to stop, i promise!”

Emmet’s eyes move back to Ingo.

“Doesn’t feel like it. My beauty sleep is very important for my work and my mental health!”

Back to Melli.

“I’m trying everything i can think of. There’s not much left that we haven’t experimented with...!”

“Okay!” Emmet interrupts. “There’s been a number of public indecency rules broken just now. But i’m verrrry generous and the work day is already over so i’ll let it pass.”

“What do you think we're talking about?” Ingo asks, confused.

Emmet smiles blankly for quite some time.

“I am Emmet, and i am gone!” he declares and swiftly follows through with his declaration.

“Thank you for your hard work!” Ingo calls after his brother.

Melli’s just too tired to go through his entire usual beauty routine before bed. It’s been a long day of photoshoots for a new product he’s pushing; he’s not sure why an energy drink company needs such a beautiful man to advertise for them, but sex sells, of course.

Ingo already has three cans of the dreck in their fridge. His boyfriend is so supportive and a very easy mark.

Melli simply cleanses his face, brushes his teeth and puts a thin hairband in his hair. It’s going to be a complete disaster scene in the morning, but he just can’t muster the energy tonight.

He shuffles into their bedroom and chases a Stunky and Litwick off the bed and out of the room. Without the Litwick, the room is bathed in the dim light of a bedside lamp. Ingo is already in bed browsing on his phone as Melli climbs in.

Ingo puts his phone aside and looks to Melli with pouting eyes. “I’ll try to behave tonight,” he says.

“Okay,” Melli responds, though he feels guilty for not believing his partner. But every night since they had moved in together not too long ago had proven…

Ingo leans up to kiss him which Melli returns sloppily and tiredly.

Melli blearily wakes to low sunlight in his eyes. That’s unusual. He’s usually, unwillingly, awake before dawn has even cracked. And he is not a morning person.

He grumbles, reaching out an arm from under the wonderfully warm and cosy covers to reach his phone. It’s 8:09am, still early, but not the offensively early hours he’s become accustomed to since living with his partner.

Which is another surprising thing. He can feel Ingo behind him, pressed up close with his arms loosely around Melli’s lower torso and his face firmly pushed into the base of Melli’s neck. Ingo is naturally an early riser, but he’s still in bed, still in a deep slumber.

So Melli isn’t going to let this rare moment escape him. He warmly clasps Ingo’s hands and entwines their legs, happily dozing, enjoying the quiet and occasional deep breaths of his lover as if Ingo is breathing in and living on only Melli’s scent.

They can stay like this for another five or ten minutes before Ingo wakes and realises he might be late for work.

The next night Melli completes his entire beauty routine including wearing his hair up in curls and climbs into bed. After some light chit-chatting and a goodnight peck they settle for sleep.

As if on cue–

SNOOOORE

Ingo’s incessant snoring returns like a fog horn. The water in his bedside glass is trembling like danger is approaching.

Testing a theory, Melli immediately loosens his hair and fans it over his sleeping lover's face. As if it’s a magical spell, Ingo almost immediately quietens down to sleepy mumbles, nuzzling into its silky touch.

Melli breathes heavily.

Of all the positions, medicines, ASMR, mouth guards etcetera they’ve tried, it turns out the simple cure for Ingo's snoring is Melli himself. That’s okay, Melli thinks to himself. He’s willing to sacrifice an extra thirty minutes in the morning fixing his hair to sleep comfortably with his lover.

He spends a moment watching his love sleep peacefully before he moves onto his side, arms wrapping around Ingo as they’re both lost in the curtain of lavender-blue hair.

It’s one of many quiet nights.

Notes:

This was just a stream-of-consciousness fic. I haven’t written in some time, but i’m sick so i have not much else to do but read and write, so… yeah! I would like to see something absolutely, truly sappy and lovey-dovey with these two, they’re so cute.
