Luckiest Man in the World

Summary:

After his return from Germany August gets to meet his son for the first time and has a heart to heart with his wife about his absence.

Notes:

I've never posted anything before, but I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring since there isn't much fiction for this fandom. Hopefully it's okay, I'm pretty proud of it.

Work Text:

August Fenwick was unsure what he was more interested in, his beautiful wife whom he had gone almost a year without, or the tiny life in her arms. The baby, his son, was more perfect than he ever imagined a human being could be. The small family finally had a moment to themselves to breathe after his miraculous return from the dead, and he really wasn't sure what to do with himself except to stare at the son he never knew he had as his wife approached him and sat beside him on their bed, offering him the baby gently. He took the small life into his arms, not completely sure what he was doing.
"Like this, Gus," Kit said quietly as she adjusted his arms to better support the baby’s head. August stared at the baby in his arms absolutely starstruck by the fragile little boy with his wife's nose. His own eyes stared back at him, a bright and curious spark to their dark brown, and it was almost enough to bring him to tears.
"You alright peaches?" The concern in Kit's voice pulled him out of his reverie.
“Yes, just a little overwhelmed around the edges as it were," he said with a smile in his voice and a lightness in his chest he hadn't felt in years.
"I'm very quotable," Kit responded, the same smile in her voice. She watched the husband she thought she had lost as he held the son she thought she would never get the chance to tell him about. "So it was worth rushing home for?" He could hear the grin in her voice and picture the way it lit up her face, even as he was absolutely transfixed on the baby.
"Of course it was, I just wish I had made it back sooner."
"Oh, Gus," her voice was exasperated with an undercurrent of an emotion he could not begin to name, "I need ya to do me a favor sweetheart."
"Anything," he replied at once, although his eyes would not meet hers.
"You have to promise me you won't beat yourself up over this, it wasn't your fault." She moved closer into his side as she said this, wrapping one of her arms behind his back and leaning her head on his shoulder. "I don't blame you, never have, and we need you here with us more than we need anything else."
A thick silence filled the room for a few moments before he let out a quiet sigh. "Okay," he said leaning into her touch. They stayed like that for a while, comfortably quiet and watching the baby as he began to doze off in his father's arms for the first time. August finally broke the silence. "Does he have a-" he cut himself off sensing his wife's teasing smile, "What's his name?"
"There ya go," she said teasingly, "His name is William Thomas Maxwell Fenwick, I've been calling him Billy."
"It's perfect, god he's perfect," August said in a voice so quiet it was nearly a whisper. He spoke as though if he was too loud the moment would break, as if this was all a dream and any second he would wake up back in Germany with no idea who he was. As though this was all just the best dream he had ever had.
"He is, isn't he?" Kit's response was in the same hushed tone he used. "You're pretty perfect yourself sweety," she said delighting in the pink that started to creep up his ears at the compliment.
"I'm so happy I made it home," he continued in the same hushed tone.
"And I'm happy to have you home," she leaned up just enough to kiss his cheek.
"I love you so much, you know that right?"
"And I love you," she said with a yawn. After a few minutes Kit grew heavier at his side and her breathing began to even out. Just like that August Fenwick found himself in a room with his son sleeping in his arms and his wife asleep at his side, and he couldn't help but wonder what he did to deserve being the luckiest man in the world.
