Work Text:
“Why, exactly, don’t you of all people have a bed?” Halcyon asks, voice carrying upwards from his position on the small bump of grass that Wayland hasn’t flattened out yet which has already sort of gotten attached to him in Wayland’s mind. Wayland places a calcite brick, sighs, and busies roseself with placing a few more instead of looking at him.
“I just don’t sleep well,” iv says.
The grave is nestled under an apple tree, with several of the fruit fallen beside the disturbed ground as they rot nearby the exposed coffin. Ce can’t make out the name or epitaph on the headstone as the words jumble and letters shift. A bell tolls, once, twice, three times. The sound echoes around them, booming, but it does not ever drown out the whispering.
The whispering surrounds vir, never once faltering, building slowly but surely. The source is nowhere to be found, fleur hopes fleur’s imagining it. Safer than the alternative. If they were imagining it, it meant they hadn’t been found.
“You cannot run from your purpose, little heiress of mine.” The voice calls from the sky, and ce jumps back, stumbling back, backwards, tripping over cir feet as they plummet into the open coffin, which slams closed as ce gasps for breath, back pulsing in sharp stabbing pain. The darkness wraps itself around ros, along with the whispering, which is deafening in volume.
The coffin is the source. Iv doesn’t need any light to recognize the carved, intricate bones iv’s fallen onto, the ones piercing iv’s back. Blood runs down vir shirt as ve gasps as the whispering grows louder louder louder
Wayland wakes with a start, sucking in a sharp breath. Ey wraps eir arms around emself slightly, choking back tears as ey tries to sit up, before ro is stopped in rose’s tracks. Halcyon’s arm tightens slightly over cir, pulling cir closer. Wayland feels vir breath catch, before letting it fall from vir mouth in a comforted sigh.
This doesn’t calm their thoughts remotely, mind still racing even as the dream empties itself from their mind, but Wayland finds peace in the company.
