Work Text:
Letting out a breath, I watch as a small cloud of fog floats off in front of my face. Dissipating into the cool evening air. I rub my hands together in an attempt to stay warm while I wait outside the cafe that Mike and I frequent. My eyes following after passers by, the urge to follow them itching along my nerves. The Beholding urging to be fed.
“I didn’t keep you waiting long did I?” Mikes cheery face pops up next to me snapping me out of my haze. The scent of ozone engulfing my senses, in such a way I’ve come to adore. I startle for a moment but then quickly regain my composure as I smile back at him.
“No not long, only been here a few minutes.” I laugh, then go to turn into the cafe.
Mike quickly grabs my arm stopping me, shaking his head.
“I told you, I want to show you something. If we don’t go now we will miss it.” He says firmly, his voice playful yet not giving anything away. I cock an eyebrow at him as he swiftly removes his scarf and wraps it around my neck. His scar now visible to anyone passing by, but he pays it no mind.
“You’ll want this on trust me.” He says as he loops an arm through mine and encourages me to walk with him.
“Alright then Mr Mysterious, what’s this amazing thing you want to show me?” I query, nervous excitement creeping its way into my stomach.
“Okay, so you’ve read statements about me. All that rubbish you do at the Institute.” He says nonchalantly, I hum in acknowledgment.
“So I thought it’s time I show you.” He says, almost giddy with excitement.
“Oh? Planning on feeding me to the great depths of the sky are we?” I ask, my tone joking. He puts his hand on his chest in mock offence.
“Oh you’re hilarious. You’re just lucky I happen to enjoy your company.” He laughs but then quickly stops walking causing me to stop with him. “But seriously, do you want me to show you?” He says looking up at me with his bright blue eyes that I find myself constantly getting lost in. One of his hands has come to rest on my shoulder as he stares at me intently.
I nod slowly, unable to find my voice for the moment as I stare back at him wide eyed.
“Fantastic. Take a deep breath.” He says quietly, his other hand has now come to rest on my waist.
I steadily take a deep breath in through my nose, hold it then exhale. A wry smile creeping across his lips, as suddenly I feel my stomach drop and my ears pop. My body feeling weightless, my mind feeling dizzy. Quickly I look around as I try and gain a feel for my surroundings.
The orange hues of the setting sun surround us in every direction I look, my brain unable to comprehend what’s happening I let out a sharp gasp.
I’m falling. Falling in the great vastness of the sky. Mike is still holding onto me, his hands tight and his eyes alight with bliss.
“Oh my god!” I shout out the sound of the rushing wind making it almost inaudible. Suddenly our decent slows and we are almost floating now, suspended in midair.
“Isn’t it amazing?” Mike says, his voice enraptured as he shows me something very few ever survive. His hand on my shoulder moves to join the other hand on my waist and he turns me so I’m now facing away from him. “Look!” He says close to my ear. I follow his gaze to see the sun setting now over the horizon, nothing encroaching my view of it expect puffy dark clouds.
I exhale, my mind in awe at the beautiful sight before us, my voice catching in my throat for a moment. My body finally getting used to the feeling of being fully suspended.
“I- I don’t even know what to say.” I say softly it’s almost inaudible, lest for Mikes close proximity to me.
“You don’t have to say anything.” He chuckles, “I’ve wanted to show you this for awhile. I just didn’t know when.” He says, voice sounding vulnerable. His hands on my waist move to lace with my own as he once again turns me. His hold on me still tight as he allows himself to float just a ways above me as I look up at him in awe. “I just hope you like it.” He breathes, his eyes full of uncertainty.
“This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Thank you. Thank you so much.” I say, pouring my feelings into my words. “Truly.”
He grins, a giddy boyish sort of smile, as he unlaces one of his hands from mine and moves it to caress my face, bringing me closer to him. A moment passes like this neither of us daring to move, then just like that his lips are on mine. My mind comes to a standstill as I let out a gasp and my eyes flutter shut.
This moment I had imagined so many times finally happening, but I had never imagined it like this.
His lips are soft against mine, his hand moving from my cheek to the back of my neck as he remains floating above me. The glow of the sun now fading into the early darkening light of the late evening. Pulling back slightly he looks down at me, eyes searching my face for any hesitation and all I can do is stare back at him, utterly starstruck.
A wry smile pulls at his lips and quickly he’s kissing me again, this time more firmly. My lips melding against his as his other hand that was once holding mine now clutches my waist. Pulling me closer to him as I wrap my arms around his neck.
I let out a gasp as the kiss deepens further and suddenly we are falling once more. The wind rushing up past us as I hold onto him for dear life. As I pour every pent up emotion I have into this earth shattering kiss.
Falling, falling, falling.
Then suddenly we are back, the ground solid under our feet, the busy London traffic whirring by us as we remain tightly embraced on the sidewalk.
As if we are the only two people in the world.
