Tadashi hates Jurassic Park

Summary:

Since they met, all those years ago, Tsukki's birthday has followed a rather simple formula: class, then practice, then dinner at the Tsukishimas', and Jurassic Park before sleep.

This marked the last time Tadashi was forced to sit through Jurassic Park on September 27th. That was Tsukki’s boyfriend’s job, now.

Notes:

I posted this on my twitter as an impromptu thread a few months ago, but I'm not actually that fond of thread fics, so here it is, with better formatting (I hope)!

Hope you like it! ♡(˃͈ દ ˂͈ ༶ )

Work Text:

Tadashi knows Jurassic Park by heart. He knows every single line of that movie by heart, but he hates it.

Oh, does he hate Jurassic Park.

But he deals with it, every single year on or around September 27th, because it's the only thing his best friend insists on watching on his birthday. Every– single– year.

Since they met, all those years ago, Tsukki's birthday has followed a rather simple formula: class, then practice, then dinner at the Tsukishimas', and Jurassic Park before sleep.

It’s their senior year, and Hinata happened to overhear them while they talk about their weekend plans and invited himself. To Tadashi's surprise, Tsukki accepts—truth be told, it’s not that much of a surprise anymore, Tadashi actually thinks Hinata and Tsukki are friends, no matter how vehemently Tsukki denies it.

Then, Kageyama said he felt left out and that he wanted to join them, and Tsukki—well, he didn’t accept that, exactly, but he didn’t really refuse either.

Yachi, too embarrassed to say she wanted to join them as shamelessly as Kageyama had done, kept looking at Tsukki when she thought he wouldn’t notice. Tsukki, of course, noticed, and said, “You come too, Yachi. You’re certainly better company than these doofuses.”

So, it’s Saturday, the evening before Tsukki's birthday, and the five of them are sitting on Tsukki's couch ready to watch Jurassic Park.

Halfway through the movie, Tadashi notices three things: Yachi is grabbing at his arm, hiding her face every time a dinosaur comes on screen (if you think Tadashi is blushing, no he isn’t!); Hinata, instead of watching the movie, is on his phone, probably texting Kenma; and... Tsukki isn't looking at the movie. Not that he needs to, really, if Tadashi knows the movie by heart, Tsukki can probably recite it backwards in its original English.

What’s strange is that Tsukki and Kageyama are whispering at each other. Tadashi hears enough to understand that Kageyama is asking questions about the movie, and that Tsukki is answering them eagerly. Kageyama's eyes never leave the screen, but his upper body is leaning so far into Tsukki's personal space, his shoulder sometimes hits Tsukki's chest.

And Tsukki doesn't seem to mind.

Huh.

By the end, when they’re all getting ready to go home, Kageyama bites his lip, looks at Tsukki from the corner of his eye, and asks, “Are there more?”

Tsukki's face lights up as if someone had told him he'd won the lottery, and he replies, “Yeah, a new one came out last month. Wanna watch it in the movie theater?”

They seem to have forgotten they still have company, because Kageyama turns to face him and replies, a shy smile on his lips, “It's a date, Kei.”
