CHAPTER 1 - The Haunting of 12 Grimmauld place
“The day has come boy, you will make your mother proud, do you hear me?” echoed Orion Black from the large armchair in the corner.
He was reading the daily profit and tutting as they’ve hired yet another muggle born, Sirius never really understood his parents’ hatred for muggle born’s despite their excessive efforts to drill the same opinion into him. His cousin Andromeda had married a muggle born and she regularly sent Sirius records and books from the muggle world, his mother swiftly burned and binned them of course. Except one that Sirius managed to sneak to his room during his mother’s fit of rage at Andromedas audacity. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare this had quickly became Sirius’s favourite book, after all it was filled with drama, love, tragedy and most importantly fights. Which Sirius and Regulus started recreating one Christmas when regulus was gifted toy swords. So, if Muggles where the problem and we shouldn’t mix blood with them, why did they create such wonderful things, why did his cousin marry one?
To admit he had never actually met a muggle, nor a muggle born wizard, so he was basing his full opinion on one small book and his cousin’s choice of love. His parents could be telling the truth that there the scum of the earth and lesser than the likes of The Noble House of Black. That they shouldn’t be taught magic and in doing so we risk exposure to the likes of the muggle world.
Like his father said, today was the day, the day he had been dreaming of all summer, the day he finally got to go to Hogwarts. Sirius had packed all his essential belongings into his absurdly large trunk the night before, certain he had still forgotten something he did one last check over his bag. Wand, schoolbooks, Romeo and Juliet (can’t risk mam finding it), weekend clothes, pj’s, school uniform, potions equipment and a quill.
He was ready… Maybe.
Now don’t get me wrong Sirius was ecstatic to be leaving 12 Grimmauld place but also terrified, this dingy, claustrophobic house was all he had ever known. This house was where he had belonged for his entire life how was he expected to just leave, but all he had ever wanted to do was leave, to run, to escape, so why is it so daunting now. Why can’t he take that first step onto the path outside.
“So, you excited to get away”
The voice came from behind and automatically calmed Sirius down, it was his little brother Regulus Arcturus Black. Regulus was just an inch smaller than Sirius with the same jet-black hair, high cheekbones, ash blue eyes and a jawline so sharp it could slit a throat. This was the Black blueprint, the one defining feature that separated the brothers was the scar through Sirius’s eyebrow, the result of him disobeying his father and questioning The Dark Lord. The scar was one of many scattered across Sirius’s body, but this was just part of growing up here, his parents demanded perfection anything less should and would be punished severely. Regulus’s skin however was flawless he was less arrogant than his brother and 90% of the time obeyed both his mother and father. His parents always punished Regulus mentally rather than physically, they knew exactly how to inflict as much pain as possible to both their sons without question.
“Yeah of course I am, one whole year without you. Nothing better honestly.”, Sirius sniggered,
he realised this joke hadn’t been took awfully well by his brother as a tear fell down his red cheek. Seeing Reggie’s gaunt lifeless expression broke Sirius, it felt like someone twisting a knife in his gut, he knew he was leaving his poor Reggie to the wolves, and he wasn’t as resilient as Sirius. He questioned whether Regulus was strong enough. He debated staying and waiting till him and Reggie could go together but he knew this wasn’t an option, his parents would simply force him to leave after all they wouldn’t hesitate to use the Imperious curse on him.
Sirius dragged Regulus in for a tight hug, the embrace was unusual for the brothers they barely ever touched knowing an excessive show of emotion would be met with an equally excessive punishment. It lasted a mere 30 seconds before Sirius felt Regulus pull away and turn his back walking through the sombre, narrow entryway and disappearing into the front sitting room. It took everything in Sirius’s power not to chase after him just so he could convince him it would be okay.
Walburga appeared minutes later; she was a tall proud looking woman with slick black hair, with a streak of grey aging her beyond her years. She walked with a cane now after the incident where Sirius rode a broom into her leg on his 5th birthday. She regularly used this cane to whack the boys during their mandatory dark magic lessons growing up, Sirius thought this was always some sick form of karma.
she walked the lengthy corridor between herself, and her eldest son, as she approached, she reminded her son “Slytherin!”
“Slytherin, will be the only house we shall except. The others are disgustingly littered with Mudbloods and blood traitors, Slytherin is the only place for a Black. Do you hear me? Sirius” …
WHACK
The cane strook the back of Sirius’s skull sending him stumbling down the steps of Grimmauld Place into the muggle world, 12 Grimmauld Place was in the middle of a muggle street much to the family’s dismay. Sirius however loved it, although he was never aloud out to play with the muggle children, he often watched them playing their odd games, no exploding snap or quidditch, just running away from each other and occasionally tapping one another. This odd little game they played was called tag, which Sirius attempted to play with Regulus but neither of them really understood the objective.
Sirius rubbed his saw head and felt a headache pulsing to the surface,
“Are you listening?” Walburga started,
“YES, YES, I was listening. Slytherin or I’m disowned right?” Sirius exclaimed in a cocky manor.
“Precisely! This is no joke Sirius, The Noble House of Black has been in Slytherin for centuries, I will not let my son be the exception.”
“I will not have you bring dishonour to this name. Do you understand?”
“Yes, Mother I understand”, Sirius’s confident nature had faded he realised how much was riding on this scruffy, stained hat putting him in the right house.
Reggie’s safety, his safety … his life.
As Sirius let his mothers’ words settle in his brain, she grabbed him by the hand tightly, he squirmed to loosen her grip but the more he moved the tighter she grasped.
CRACK
Sirius hated evaporating it made him dizzy and he always forgot to close his mouth meaning it was as dry as the Sahara Desert when he arrived at Kings Cross Station. The Muggle Station was packed so his mother kept hold of his hand and lead him through the crowd of muggles, the air was thick with smoke causing Sirius to cough which resulted in a stern glare from his mother. You wouldn’t think it was a normal bodily function the way she looked at him was like he had confessed his love for a muggle or something.
After wading through hundreds of muggles they were finally between platforms 9 and 10. To get to Hogwarts you had to run at the wall between them which led you to platform 9 ¾. Sirius was nervous about running into a wall especially with so many strangers around but after being reassured of their obliviousness he started to run.
CHAPTER 2 – when I met him…
Sirius was gob smacked when he reached platform 9 3/4, he started to walk to the doors of the train so engulfed in the beauty of everything around him. Not watching where he’s going, he crashed his trunk into another boys, after quickly saving his trolley from falling completely. He raised his head to meet the eyeline of the boy in front of him, the boy was extremely tall with a mop of curly, mousey blonde hair covering his face. OMG his face. It was severally scarred but Sirius was focusing more on the perfect dusting of freckles that covered his nose.
“What ya staring at?” the boy said with a nervous chuckle.
“I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to stare I’m so out of it. Erm… I’m Sirius,”
Sirius decided against informing his possible new friend of his last name knowing in the wizarding world it held a certain stigma, depending on if this boy was pure blood or muggle born.
“Erm I’m Remus, Remus Lupin”
There was an awkward pause between the boys until,
“Would you want to sit together” they said in unison, Sirius said it a lot more confidently but still, Remus wanted to sit with him. Sirius had never had a friend, the closest thing he had was his brother and he didn’t think that really counted.
The boys boarded the train after leaving their trolleys in the appropriate spot. They walked slowly up the train glancing into each compartment, most had already been filled and after scoping half the train decided an empty carriage wasn’t going to happen. So, he entered the emptiest ushering Remus to follow.
He sat near a ginger girl with skin as pale as porcelain, she had freckles like Remus but not nearly as evenly spread and they littered her forehead and cheeks. She appeared to be reading the charms book they had been instructed to buy for their first year, however she swiftly placed it back in her bag when she spotted the two of us settling in their carriage.
“Hello, I’m Lilly Evans and this is Severus” the girl squeaked in an excited voice.
I saw a smirk paint across Remus’s face I’m guessing this was due to the name of the boy lily had just introduced. To be fare Severus was a strange name, but he was called Sirius so couldn’t really pass judgement.
Severus was a tall, slender boy with shoulder length slick black hair, drooped eyes and a long-pointed nose. he seemed unimpressed by the boy’s sudden appearance and lily’s mere excitement to welcome them.
“I’m Sirius, this is Remus we just met but are already best friends.” Sirius stated and shot Remus a wink.
Remus blushed and looked down, making Sirius nervous that he had already crossed the line, he had a habit of doing this with his brother.
“Oh, me and Sev met this summer, my parents are muggle you see so I had no clue what was happening to me, but Sev helped” she beamed and smiled at Severus.
She’s muggle born, but she’s lovely, his parents can’t be completely right because otherwise Sirius should automatically hate this girl, but she was so warm like a cup of hot coco. He just felt drawn to her and comforted.
“Does Severus speak?” Remus asked.
“YES! Just not to the likes of you.” Severus snarled looking Remus up and down.
Remus wasn’t the best dressed, but Sirius couldn’t stand this Severus character already, how dare he speak to his new friend like that. Before Sirius could speak up for Remus, Severus had left the carriage and lily had gone stumbling after him asking,
“Why where you so mean there probably nice”.
Remus stayed staring at the ground by his reaction Sirius gathered he was used to this level of rudeness,
“He was a prick; wonder why she’s hanging out with him seems right up himself.”
“You can say that again hope I don’t end up in his house couldn’t stand sharing a room with the greasy mop,” Remus finally raised his head meeting Sirius’s eyes again.
“What house do you want to be in?” Sirius asked hoping they could stay friends since he was inevitably ending up in Slytherin like his family.
“Well, my dad was in Ravenclaw, but I’m far too thick for that so maybe Gryffindor, would honestly take anything over Slytherin apparently there really prejudice! What about you?”
“Oh, erm I’m almost definitely ending up in Slytherin my full family is.” Sirius explained now staring at his newly polished shoes.
“Just cause’ your fam is don’t mean you’ll be. You might be nowt like your family, you know what I mean.”
Sirius had never heard someone speak so unproper his parents made sure him, and Reggie spoke perfect English and never used slang. But Sirius liked how it sounded he liked how Remus held himself all around he was casual not uptight like everyone Sirius was raised around, it was a pleasant shock to the system. A much-needed shock as well.
The next hour or so the boys sat quietly, pleasantly in silence occasionally making comments on the landscape and how much longer it would be before they reached Hogwarts. Nothing ground-breaking. When the sweet trolley past there door Sirius shot up, he had a few galleons in his pocket and needed a sugar rush. He quickly grabbed two chocolate frogs and a box of Bertie Botts every flavoured beans. as he sat back in his seat he chucked a frog to Remus, Remus looked shocked at this exchange but thanked Sirius anyway.
The boys spent the rest of the train journey trying to guess flavours of Bertie Bott’s beans. Laughing hysterically at each other when they got a disgusting one like earwax or soap.
As the train drew into the station Remus and Sirius stared out the window at the great lake, Sirius had told Remus about the giant squid and now Remus was determined to spot it. However, they were ushered of the train by some older students and instructed to go stand next to this ginormous man. Sirius had read about giants but was positive dumbledore wouldn’t have one leading them to the castle.
The giant man turned out to be Hagrid, Hogwarts grounds keeper. He had a thick bushy beard and long black curly hair making it hard to see his face and to understand him. Hagrid led all the first-year students down some seaweed coated steps which Sirius was convinced one wrong step and he would be sent hurtling into the great lake. The first years were instructed to climb into the boats lining the shore, Remus and Sirius of coarse clambered into the closest one, a frizzy blonde-haired girl with bright blue eyes staggered into their boat with a curly, short haired girl with golden eyes. Sirius didn’t catch their names they just sniggered and giggled to each other until there boat docked itself magically at Hogwarts.
Sirius helped the girls and then Remus out of the boat as they began the short walk to the castle entry way.
CHAPTER 3 – The moment of truth, the sorting ceremony
As the grand oak doors opened the first years were met by a young woman with dark hair and half-moon glasses perched on the end of her nose. she informed them, she was Mrs McGonagall and she taught transfiguration, she seemed stern, but she had kind eyes. She led them down two corridors before reaching an even larger door then they just came through.
“In a moment you will enter the great hall, alphabetically you’ll be called out. You shall sit on the stool at the front of the hall and the sorting hat will be placed upon your head in order to sort you. There are 4 houses Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Slytherin. These houses will be like a home while you’re at Hogwarts, you can win house points for your house however house points can also be deducted for poor behaviour”
Would Slytherin be the same as his last home cold and filled with hatred, Sirius suddenly hated the idea of Slytherin, Remus was right he was nothing like his family. He won’t be what they want, he’ll just be him.
“Now everyone, ready! Follow me”
She pushed the doors open with a flick of her wand. It was magnificent 4 long tables coated with plates of food fit for a king, leading up to one table slightly raised, this was obviously the teacher’s table. Before Sirius really had a chance to admire the great halls beauty McGonagall cleared her throat and
“Abigail Abbot”
The young girl strutted too the chair; Sirius questioned her courage but remembered there was a reason he recognised the name her family was part of the sacred 28. So, she would inevitably be in
“Slytherin” the hat announced excitedly as if to be glad it’s been used, I suppose it does only come out once a year.
McGonagall rattled of more and more names
“James Potter”
“Gryfindor”
“Lily Evans” the muggle born girl from the train
“Gryfindor”
“Lila Lovegood”
“Ravenclaw”
“Marlene McKinnon” this was one of the girls from the boat the one with wild blonde hair.
“Gryfindor” she seemed ecstatic as she ran over to lily and another girl Sirius believed her name was Mary, but he was drifting between listening and panicking.
“Peter Pettigrew” the hat seemed to struggle with this decision which only made the short, plump boy sweat more making Sirius feel slightly ill until finally …
“Gryfindor” the boy ran quickly to hug another Gryfindor boy, both pretty much leaping with joy.
“Paige Carrow”
Obviously “Slytherin”
“Remus Lupin”
Oh God. Sirius wanted nothing more than to at least be with his new best friend so making more friends wouldn’t be as overwhelming as he already had a partner in crime. The hat took a second with Remus not as long as it took on that other boy but
“Gryfindor”
No! no! It couldn’t be Sirius was never going to end up in Gryfindor! But Remus looked so happy he shyly approached the Gryfindor table and sat down with peter and James. Just like that Sirius felt alone again. Sirius knew where he was going, and it wasn’t with Remus. The sorting hat drawled off more names
“Salem Anderson”
“Hufflepuff!”
“Sebastian Avery”
“Slytherin”
Then the time came “Sirius Black”
Sirius made his way to the front dragging his feet not wanting to find out what his future at Hogwarts would look like. He glanced at the Slytherin table to which he met eyes with his cousin Narcissa giving him a reassuring yet slightly threatening look. Mrs McGonagall placed the hat gently on his head and he jumped slightly as it started to talk…
“Very loyal I can see but not a Hufflepuff definitely not, Ambitious with good heritage, Slytherin would serve you well in your endeavours.”
Without thinking Sirius found himself saying “Not Slytherin”
“Not Slytherin, okay, let me see chivalrous, undoubtedly brave, well I think we have our answer… Gryfindor!”
Sirius felt a smile brimming from ear to ear, he wasn’t his parents. He made his way other to the Gryfindor table and quickly glanced to the Slytherin table he could hear their whispers
“a Black, not in Slytherin”
“His poor parents”
“Undoubtedly be disowned when his parents hear, as he should be”
“Bad enough he’s not in Slytherin but to get Gryfindor he’ll be surrounded by Mud bloods.”
Sirius felt a tug on his sleeve he looked down to see it was Remus telling him to sit down, as he sat, he was introduced to James Potter. James was average height and stereotypically handsome with curly black hair and eyes like melted chocolate. Sirius was positive that girls would melt just by looking into them and he could tell James knew.
He was then introduced to the short, stubby looking one Peter. After a short conversation Sirius gathered Peter and James had grown up together as well as that Marlene girl. He didn’t really understand why someone so confident, and outgoing had kept this shy nervous guy around, but I suppose opposites attract and all that.
“Remus here was telling us use met at the station” James said while stuffing his face with mash potato.
“Yeah, crashed into each other and became best friends. After this douche on the train was rude to him and we both agreed he was a twat that needed a shower, we were inseparable.” Sirius responded casually.
“Excuse you. That’s my friend you’re talking about he’s just not good with new people no need to attack his appearance.” Lilly responded
Remus blushed from embarrassment not realising lily had been so close to them. But Sirius never really felt embarrassed, and Severus had been rude, so he was sticking to his point.
“He may be your friend, but he was a twat to mine so until he apologises, I’m going to keep pointing out the obvious. So, from my description James which Slytherin first year do you think Severus is”
James laughed and turned to examine the first years before pointing directly at Severus Snape.
“See lily I’m not the only one who thinks he’s a grease ball or James wouldn’t have been able to pick him out” Sirius said smugly
“You are such a bully honestly can’t believe I defended you to him” lily exclaimed before grabbing her bag and walking away followed by Marlene and Mary running after her.
“Can you believe that. I’m a bully, seriously”
“Yeah, she’s bang out of order, at least we got a laugh out of it though!”
Sirius could already tell he and James would get along; they were the same confident, rich, smart but of course acted like idiots rather than showing their genius. Remus however wasn’t laughing he was eating his dinner with one hand and reading a book with the other. After the initial embarrassment of lily confronting Sirius, Remus thought it best to keep his head down in case Sirius tried to include him like he had with James.
The boys finished their tea and looked for a prefect to help them find the common room. A girl called Cassidy Long escorted them to the fat lady portrait, as they arrived Sirius was still laughing at how shocked Remus was at the moving staircase and Peter nearly falling off one. The prefect said, “giggle water” and the portrait swung open.
CHAPTER 4 – the boy’s room.
Gryfindor common room was what Sirius always wanted that cosy, warmth one would normally feel when at home, when around friends and family. Sirius finally knew that warmth, that feeling, and it felt beautiful.
The walls were draped with long Gryfindor banners and banners of years Gryfindor had won the quidditch and house cups. Red velvet sofas surrounded the fireplace with large red armchairs in each corner around small tables for studying. The floor was a dark mahogany wood covered by a large red rug with gold trimmings.
“Boys up the stairs and to the right, the girls the same on the left.”, Cassidy yelled across to all the first years.
Much to Remus’s dismay James and Sirius ran towards the stairs tripping over each other and knocking Peter on his ass, not that either of the boys realised they were too ecstatic to see their new room for the next 7 years. Peter stumbled up the stairs behind Remus rubbing his back where he had landed on someone’s discarded shoe.
The room had 4 single 4 poster beds with red curtains for privacy. They had two windows which looked out onto the quidditch fields to which James seemed buzzing about. They had a small bathroom which was unbearably bright white and polished to perfection. On the door it had a few simple cleaning spells and informed them there would be weekly dorm inspections carried out by a prefect to ensure they where being respectful and clean.
James and Sirius where already bickering about which bed, they wanted, and Peter was whining saying he wanted to have the bed near James but not the one nearest the door. Remus was getting frustrated with how spoilt they where all coming off so decided pulling straws was the fairest and quickest way to shut them all up.
“Right so I have four straws each person will pick one whoever has the shortest picks which bed they want first” Remus said frustratingly as he had tried to explain multiple times.
“Then the next shortest picks, then the next. You all got it!”
“I’ll pick a straw first” Sirius ran other to Remus smiling with excitement.
He drew a straw from Remus’s hand slowly to build the tension in the room. Remus thought he must love the attention so much to be this attention grabbing when its just the four of them.
“For fuck’s sake!” Sirius pronounced grumpily. The straw he had pulled was easily 20cm long.
“Well, I’ve definitely lost!”
“Not necessarily, just wait.” Remus said sternly
James was next his straw was no more then 5cm,
“Get in at least I beat you. Look Sirius I win” James laughed,
“Oh, shut up” Sirius said giving James a little shove and a smile.
Peter picked next and his face dropped his straw was quite long, so he ran up to Sirius to see who had lost.
“Damn it! I always lose” Peter began to whine
“don’t worry Pete we still need to see what Remus’s is” James said reassuringly
Remus pulled out the last straw it was clearly longer than James’s but shorter than Sirius’s, so he got to pick 2nd. James ran to the bed second closest to the door, the one near the bigger of the two windows so he could watch the quidditch team’s practice. Remus decided on the bed closest to the bathroom as he has a weak bladder. Sirius chose the bed between Remus and James next to the other window, leaving Peter with the bed next to the door. At least he was next to James though, so he didn’t complain to much. The boys all settled on their beds and started to unpack, as Sirius opened his trunk, he noticed a letter placed on top of his clothes. He settled himself onto the windowsill and opened the letter…
Dear Sirius,
I would have given this to you in person but as you know father demands to read any letters, we receive so I thought it best to hide it in your suitcase. I assume your in your dorm reading this I hope your roommates are from good families, I mean they should be there’s rarely ever mudbloods in Slytherin. You’ll have to write and tell me all about the common room I can’t wait till next year when we can hang out in each other’s dorms.
Mother asked Father if he would buy you an owl so she can communicate with you better without the owls been intercepted by the ministry. They’ve been tracking mother’s owls to Bellatrix you see so I think she’s a bit paranoid. It would be great if father agrees though we can send letters weekly and it’ll feel like you’re still here.
I realise where not meant to be affectionate, but I can already tell I’m going to miss you Kreacher is nothing compared to you when it comes to playing chess, so please write back when you find this.
Love from R.A.B
Sirius felt a tear fall down his cheek all the enjoyment of getting Gryfindor faded away he had left his brother he had betrayed his family. But his family was wrong, his family where cruel and hated people simply for being themselves. But Reggie was on his own, he still believed his parents and all their pure blood supremacy.
Sirius felt a hand grab his shoulder he jumped slightly and looked up; it was James.
“You alright their mate, getting homesick? Guessing that’s a letter from home.” James said warmly.
Sirius had got used to the cocky side of James already, so this sudden change was shocking but comforting. Sirius stood up shrugging James’s hand away and stalked over to the bathroom, he shut the door behind him and sat on the floor beside the shower. He was embarrassed how could he explain his feelings right now, he missed his brother but reading that he wrote “mudblood”. It was different from just saying it as a slip of the tongue or in a moment of anger, he wrote it he had to think about writing it, he meant it. He was going to hate Sirius for becoming a blood traitor for befriending families like the Potters and Lupins. Families not in the 28. For even talking to Lilly Evans. Sirius was in hysterics now hoping the three other boys couldn’t hear him, he wasn’t allowed to show emotion he needs to suck it up and stop crying.
Just stop crying.
At that moment there was a knock on the door, the door creaked open, and the three other boys squeezed into the bathroom. Remus slid down the wall furthest from Sirius respecting his space. James however practically sat on top of Sirius and hugged him to which Sirius shockingly hugged back embracing this new little family of his own. One without prejudice.
“Come on get up! We’ll sneak to the kitchens and get ice-cream my mom says no one can cry while eating ice cream!” James said while dragging Sirius up by his wrist. Sirius obliged and got to his feet wiping his face on the cuff of his robes.
The boys had all got changed into their pj’s, so Sirius quickly changed into his own. Peter’s parents had got him and James matching Gryfindor ones which Sirius and Remus both found hysterical as they looked like a cute married couple.
“Your only jealous because we look so cool and yours are boring” James responded smugly.
“Yeah, really jealous” Remus muttered looking up from his book.
“Right, everyone ready then” James announced pulling a peculiar blanket out of his trunk …
Chapter 5 – the first adventure
James wrapped the strange looking blanket around himself, and the room fell silent for a second.
“Erm…”
“Mate your body errmmm. Where did it go” Remus spluttered in shock?
James’s body had completely vanished leaving a smirking floating head. James and Peter started to laugh while trying to explain what the blanket was.
“it’s an invisibility cloak. I’ve never seen one in person before but how do you have it” Sirius said excitedly.
Remus suddenly felt quite embarrassed he was raised in the wizarding world but kept at a safe distance so his knowledge of it was limited.
“Cool right! my dad gave it to me. Said I wasn’t aloud to bring it to Hogwarts, but I snuck it in anyway” James proudly walked round the room to show it off.
“Now if we want to sneak into to the kitchens, we’ll all have to be under it so will have to walk in perfect unison. Ok!”
“Okay!” the three boys responded.
The boys all rushed to get under elbowing and stepping on each other’s toes eventually they were all situated perfectly with James at the front to lead. They did a few practice runs around their room making sure they where in perfect sync before leaving their dorm and tackling the stairs. Peter tripped almost sending them all hurtling down the stairs, but Remus managed to keep him upright. They snuck past Cassidy and her boyfriend snogging on the couch making sure to tip toe in order not to spook them. As they walked through the portrait of the fat lady, they all let out a massive sigh, apparently, they were collectively not breathing out of fear it would be too loud.
The four boys manoeuvred their way through the castle, hesitating at each moving staircase in fear if one of them fell they all would and given Peters track record it was likely he’d trip. However, they made it to the kitchens without a hiccup, and entered the kitchen shutting the door behind them.
“It’s safe to take it off now the house elves will be asleep no doubt!” Sirius said
“Yeah, your right let’s find the fridges,” James emerged from the cloak heading towards the back of the grand room.
“overhear”
Remus being the tallest grabbed two tubs from the top shelf he obviously got chocolate for himself, and James wanted vanilla.
“Boring bastard” Remus sniggered
“What you on about it’s the best flavour it’s the original” James defended
“I agree!” exclaimed Peter already sat on the floor opening the tub.
“Nah vanillas barely a flavour its boring” Sirius agreed with Remus and shot him a smile.
The four boys sat in a circle Remus and Sirius sharing and James and Peter fighting over who’s knee the tub went on.
This was the best time Sirius had ever had, he had three friends who all seemed to like him, they cared enough to sneak out to cheer him up. Who cared if he was disowned at least, he wasn’t alone? At least he had James, someone he could laugh for hours with, Remus, someone who took every opportunity to read and had the best sarcastic humour, even Peter who Sirius had a weird feeling he had to protect and maintain his innocence.
The boys sat sharing stories from their childhoods, well James did
“Last year my dad treated me to tickets to the quidditch world cup for my birthday. Honestly there was nothing like it the crowd was electric, the atmosphere was like some sort of high I’ve never known anything like it honestly. Have any of you ever been? Pete, I know you have”
“Yeah, but the year I went the Hollyhead Harpees lost and that’s my favourite team so wasn’t a fun night in the tent” Peter said glumly
“I’ve never been” Sirius and Remus said in unison. They glanced at each other giving each other a sympathetic smile.
“My dad’s trying to get tickets for next year. I could see if he could get all of us them that would be so fun” James said to the group.
“That would be so fun” Pete repeated
“I won’t be able to” Remus said to the ground, Remus regretted saying those words the second they left his lips he knew it would be followed by Sirius saying
“Why not?”
“We should get back Filch will be searching for students out of bed its past curfew.” Remus said to distract the others from pushing further on the matter.
“you’re right let’s go everyone back under” James said getting up from the cold stone floor.
The boys made their way under the cloak and out of the kitchens. The walk back to the common room went smoothly and they luckily didn’t bump into filch. Once in the common room they ran up to their dorm and emerged from under the cloak. Sirius went over to his bed and climbed in under the covers, the others followed suit and within 10 minutes the dorm was quiet.
But Sirius couldn’t sleep, he kept wondering why Remus wouldn’t be able to go to the quidditch world cup. He didn’t come from a pure blood family so he couldn’t imagine his parents having an issue with him hanging around blood traitors.
Sirius found himself getting out of bed and walking to Remus’s. what was he doing he’s probably asleep? He would just ask if he was okay. He wouldn’t pry an answer out of Remus they had just met.
“What are you doing?” a voice came from behind Sirius, he pivoted on the spot to look up and see Remus rubbing his eyes. He had just been to the bathroom and was trying to get to his own bed.
“I er I just wanted to err see if you where okay? I realised you dodged that question earlier.” Sirius stumbled over his words.
Remus looked mad as if he was about to punch Sirius but then his face softened, and he brushed his hand through his hair and said,
“My dad wouldn’t let us, he’s strict like that, you know?”
“Yeah, my parents are the same.” There was a brief awkward silence between the two of them only disturbed by James’s snoring.
“Anyway, I’m off to bed night Sirius, sweet dreams.”
“Night.”
CHAPTER 6 – week 1
“Just do a few drops!”
“No tip the full thing he’s being lazy and were going to miss breakfast” Peter said impatiently
Remus was shocked at peter being the pushier one, but he had been complaining for the last 30 minutes about being starving and withering away. James took the glass and tipped it all over Sirius’ face before running to hide behind his own bed. Sirius woke flustered grabbing at the air, struggling to breathe as most of the water went in his mouth due to him snoring.
“What was that for” Sirius choked.
“Where late for breakfast and Peters going to go insane if he doesn’t eat soon, shower and get dressed. We’ll meet you in the great hall.”
Sirius dragged himself out of bed, showered (making sure to wash his beautiful hair and make a good first impression), brushed his teeth and put his crisp, new uniform on. He ran down to breakfast and sat between Marlene and James, loading his plate with sausages and crispy bacon, James was doing the exact same thing while explaining
“To get on the quidditch team I’ll have to practise constantly so I need my energy”.
Remus however was nibbling slowly on a slice of toast with a mountain of jam on.
“You okay there, Remus you seem a bit quite” James whispered
“Yeah, am fine, just going to get to class early don’t wanna be late for me first class do I.” Remus gathered all his books into a tattered old leather satchel with the letters L.L imprinted into the front and made his way out of the great hall.
Peter, James and Sirius took their time with breakfast and then took a leisurely stroll to the dungeons. On arrival they realised they where 10 minutes late
“5 points from Gryfindor don’t make this a habit boys.”
Slughorn was a short plump man, with rosy cheeks and bulging eyes, he was Slytherins head of house so of course loved taking points from Gryfindor. The three boys sat themselves at the back of the class on a 3-person bench. Remus obviously got there so early he was pretty much sat on Slughorns lap at the very front.
Slughorn announced today’s glass would simply be taking notes and learning where everything in the class was so next lesson they could brew ‘a cure for boils’ in a safe controlled manner. Sirius of course thought this was very boring so spent the lesson prodding Peter with his quill to see how quickly he would break. Turns out he would brake very quickly and yelled at Sirius to pack it in. Slughorn didn’t appreciate this outburst as he was trying to answer Lilly Evans question,
“Peter come here now, you can sit at the front with Miss McKinnon,”
“Yes Sir” Peter ran to the front with a pep in his step, he figured he would get more done sat next to Marlene plus she was really clever.”
Slughorn carried on with his lecture and Sirius started annoying James to pass the time. But James retaliated and tipped ink onto the little notes Sirius had made. The two of them where as bad as each other and Sirius loved that, James had started a game of chucking pieces of parchment into the back of Severus’ hood.
“Its good practise for quidditch if you want to be a chaser” sniggered Sirius.
“Nah mate, I’m definitely going to be a seeker, more glory in it you know” James smirked at Sirius giving him a cheeky wink for good measure.
The bell called the game to a halt and as Snape stood up all the parchment fell out of his hood. This sent Sirius and James into a fit of laughter making it slightly obvious who was responsible,
“You filthy little …
Snape got cut off but both Potter and Black knew what he was going to say, “blood traitors”.
“Potter, Black detention after dinner. 1hour I expect to see you here pronto to clean the cauldrons” Slughorn yelled across the classroom.
The boys walked out meeting Peter and Remus outside the classroom,
“Only you two could get a detention on our first ever lesson, you tits”
“Alright goody two shoes do you want to answer any more questions? Put your hand up more then that lily” Sirius laughed nudging Remus slightly. Which was met with a sarcastic laugh from Remus.
The group made there way through the corridors up and down what seemed like a million staircases to get to there next lesson, transfiguration. The lesson was taught by Professor McGonagall and Remus managed to get 10 house points making up for the other boys losing them for being late. During the lesson Sirius napped while James kept watch and Peter took notes for the three of them. Remus found this arrangement ridiculous and very unfair on poor Peter who was struggling to keep up with McGonagall’s fast pace, so Remus took it upon himself to gently nudge Sirius’ chair from under him. Sending him hurtling backwards landing loudly on the cold stone floor, Sirius shot Remus a warning glare and clambered to his feet.
“What was that for”, the second time Sirius had uttered those words to his new friends today.
“It’s unfair on Peter do your own bloody notes, ya lazy prick” Remus muttered his thick Welsh accent more prominent now.
Sirius tried to stay mad, but he loved Remus’ way of doing things he was protective, but most important Sirius started to love how Remus spoke it was unproper and every sentence ended in a swear word or insult. Sirius thought to himself he should start swearing so all the girls thought he was cool and not some posh prick.
So, after that day Sirius became a swearer, he didn’t completely understand how to use some of the words, but he tried. He found himself taking mental notes of how Remus used them and then copying, slowly but surely, he got the hang of it but he couldn’t change the southern accent, so he still sounded posh even when speaking improper.
The first week of school had flown by so far Sirius’ favourite lesson was transfiguration he loved how the teacher was a literal Animagus. To be honest it’s the only class he paid attention in as he couldn’t mess around with James as Peter and Remus had strategically sat between them. The first week had resulted in a lot of homework which Sirius was obviously leaving till the very last second, even though he sat in the common room with the other boys as they did their own.
“You realise if ya did it at the same time we could all help each other, ya moron” Remus said over the top of his book.
“Why would I do that when I can copy of you on the way to the lesson” Sirius said sticking his tongue out.
“You bloody well can’t ya twat. Do it yourself”
“Alright, alright I’ll do some of it. Keep your hair on!”
CHAPTER 7 – double trouble
If you asked any Gryfindor who started the pranks they would probably say Sirius or James but there wrong…
20th of September
“Out my way mudblood”
Remus didn’t realise who it was at first but as he leant down to collect his books from the floor, he saw the back of a greasy, black-haired mop. Of course, it was Snape he had been pushing and making comments under his breathe since that day on the train. But this was the last straw it was a disgusting thing to call someone even Remus knew that Remus was getting revenge today.
Remus ran to the Gryfindor common room having to make 3 attempts at the password, he always forgot it, he was hoping to find Sirius in the dorm. He stormed in to be greeted by Peter sat with a cup of tea and slice of cake, not exactly the picture of revenge but he’d have to do. Remus explained the situation and Peter swung into action thinking of pranks to get snape back
“Exploding dungbongs following him I’m sure we could work out a simple charm” - P
“No to simple. We need to think bigger” - R
“Could sneak him a love potion make him fall in love with that brute who follows him around” – P
“no, I don’t agree with love potions” – R
“Omg I’ve got it” – P
“Care to share” – R
“We break into the Slytherin common room and steal all his clothes replacing them with Gryffindor colours. Then we could charm the banners and curtains to turn red and gold just like our dorm, his friends will think he wants to be a Gryffindor ha-ha”
“that’s perfect, its simple but effective. Its just small enough to be infuriating, Peter you beautiful son of a bitch”
“I’ll find out their password we’ll do it during dinner tomorrow yeah, the dorm will be empty. Should we tell James?”
“No, it’ll be fun to see their faces”
21st of September – early morning
“Psst psst”
“Omg what do you want”
“I found out the password”
Remus shot up he had forgot about the prank thinking Peter wouldn’t be able to get the password, but he had.
“I staked out hiding behind a tapestry near the Slytherin entrance their password is pure blood. Bit easy don’t ya think”
“Right meet me in the dungeons at dinner yeah 12pm sharp”
“Got it”
The two friends went about the start of their day, rolling Sirius out of bed, showering in turns, heading down to breakfast shoving their faces, double period of charms then it was time. Remus told James and Sirius he needed a piss and would meet them at dinner, it was a good excuse with Remus’ bladder. Peter arrived shortly after looking flustered as if he ran there.
“I want to be quick I still want dinner, okay?” Peter said gasping for air.
The two made there way to the entrance and exclaimed in unison “Pure blood” the door swung open with a thud.
The Slytherin common room was more extravagant then Gryfindor, draped in silver and emerald, green. Soft comforters laid over some sofas and day beds, the tables were littered in students’ homework and revision. Remus was shocked but it felt comforting it was dark but not in a dingy way and the large circle porthole window flooded the room with light dancing over the water.
“How will we know which ones his room”
“Look for the one with a Lily Evans shrine” Remus laughed.
They found there way to Severus’ dorm and began work packing his uniform into a bag. Remus was better at charms class, so he performed the colour changing charm on the drapes and curtains, it worked amazingly, and Remus was so proud of himself.
Remus checked the time and realised it was 10 mins till dinner ended so grabbed the large duffle bag of clothes and Peters hand and ran through the common room out the door.
“I can’t wait to see his face tomorrow morning when he has to wear a Gryffindor tie”
Peter didn’t respond he just started speed walking towards the great hall, Remus started thinking Peter would implode if he wasn’t around James every second of the day. They made there way to the great hall Remus managed to catch up to Peter due to his extremely long legs and Peters short ones. Remus sat next to James and started to pile his plate with one hand and eating with the other.
“That was a long wee you’ve been gone for like 30 minutes”
“God, you keeping tabs on me now Black”
“Don’t call me that”
Remus automatically felt bad but was to distracted with the excitement of seeing snape trying to insult him while repping Gryffindor.
22nd of September – breakfast
As expected snape shuffled into the great hall his head swung low with embarrassment. The boys had even managed to give him Gryfindor socks, so he was literally head to toe a Gryfindor. As Remus and Peter where sniggering into their breakfast, the Slytherin’s began to shout,
“aren’t you at the wrong table there snape”
“I wonder who did it its not even that funny honestly”
“Slughorns going to kill you snape”
James and Sirius had stood on the benches to get a better look before plonking themselves back on the benches. They were both laughing hysterically, and Remus felt a woosh of pride come over him he had made Sirius laugh…
“Whoever did that’s a genius” James said between mouthfuls of his porridge
Peter jumped into action knowing James approved of there little prank “it was me!” he screeched
“Erm Pete”
“Oh yeah sorry it was us me and Remus”
“Cracking job lads, but next time were going bigger yeah” James angled this towards Sirius.
“Definitely”
CHAPTER 8 – Secrets
Remus woke up with a thumping headache, he stumbled out of bed searching his draws for his muggle medicine. He thought to himself there must be a spell he could learn to fix headaches but asking one of the boys felt humiliating so he’d stick to ibuprofen. He walked to the bathroom; the white light stung his eyes, but he needed to shower he was sweating an insane amount.
Remus found himself crawled up in his bed after the shower all curtains drawn. he couldn’t go to lessons he was in agony; he could feel the blood pumping round his body and Sirius breathing in the bed next to him. God he could strangle Sirius right now, as he let the anger bubble to the surface James pulled the curtains of Remus’ bed apart.
“Morning sleepy head you’re going to miss breakfast”
Peter was impatiently waiting by the door looking very distraught.
“what’s up with him?” Remus whispered
“He tried to wake Sirius up and well. Sirius chucked a book at him. Think Sirius is giving breakfast a miss this morning, so I’m bringing some up for him later. What about you? Want me to bring you a plate?”
“Nah I’m fine I feel ill just going to lay in bed today mate.”
James looked concerned and went to open his mouth to reply, but instead turned and rushed out the room with Peter. Remus tried to reach up and shut the curtains to his bed, but his bones felt so weak like fine China, one wrong move and snap.
Remus drifted in and out of sleep all day, the boys had been in and out, Remus believed they had been practising flying all day as Peter was complaining a lot. Plus, this is how they spent most weekends, practising quidditch while Remus studied in the crowd. Remus was awoken by a stern knock on there dormitory, he crawled to the door and dragged himself up using the wall and door handle. It was Professor McGonagall,
“Good evening, Mr Lupin I believe you know why I’m here? “
“Err no actually”
“Your father informed us of your condition, so professor Dumbledor has come up with a safe space solution for you to spend full moons. Now chop, chop not long till sundown now”
Remus followed her through the castle and out to the grounds, they were met by a woman called Madam Pomfrey. Remus was informed this was the school nurse, he thought to himself a vet would be more appropriate but kept that to himself. Professor McGonagall stopped beside a large, brutal looking tree, which branches started to swing at them as soon as they approached. Remus turned to Madam Pomfrey scared looking for reassurance, but she kept a stern face, When Remus turned back to the tree Professor McGonagall had vanished.
“What the fuck”
“Language Mr Lupin”
An entry way suddenly appeared at the trunk of the tree where a small cat was perched, with a snap suddenly, the cute tabby cat had transformed into Professor McGonagall. Remus was mesmerized but didn’t have time to ask questions he could feel his blood boiling the full moon was approaching.
The three of them made there way through the dark winding passageway before coming to the bottom of a rather rotted looking staircase.
“This is where we leave you Mr Lupin, we shall be back at 7AM tomorrow. We will lock you into the room at the top of the staircase just for added protection, okay?”
“Okay” Remus whimpered
He climbed the stairs and entered the grand room at the top. The room was draped in silk fabrics and grand bookshelves, but you could tell it was abandoned, nature was reclaiming it. Rot, damp and mould coated the walls and Remus could here the squeaks of mice, there was a four-poster bed in the centre of the room draped with deep green curtains. He lied on the bed and listened to the distinct clicking of the door locking, he was totally alone, a weird comfort to him, it was familiar.
Remus felt every second of the full moon, his bones slowly growing, breaking, contorting, his hair molecules rapidly growing excessive hair, his senses heightening and the worst part the hunger. The scent of blood, the want to kill. Remus was powerless when It came to the wolf.
Waking up in a pool of your own blood was always terrifying, Remus always panicked it wasn’t his that he had hurt someone. He couldn’t live with himself if he did. He tried to relax but his body was so cut up, the wolf probably didn’t like being trapped with nothing to hunt but small mice so attacked itself instead.
Madam Pomfrey scuttled in as the sun raised with fresh bandages and clothes.
“I’m sorry to say you’ll be spending today in the hospital wing while I fix these cuts up. Yeah sweetheart”
She seemed sweeter this morning, but she looked at Remus like a wounded dog with such pity it angered him.
“I’ll be fine don’t worry I’m just going to shower” Remus said while placing the clothes gently over his cuts.
“No, absolutely not, we will review how you’re doing after dinner, but you are staying in the hospital wing for morning lessons. Okay Remus”
“fine”
Madam Pomfrey bandaged all Remus’ wounds when they got back to the hospital wing, Remus wincing every time she went near him. The hospital wing was boring, he would rather be in potions or charms, all that happened was students coming in trying to avoid going to lessons saying they think they have dragon pox.
Dinner time rolled around and of course Madam Pomfrey decided he was still too fragile to go to lessons. However, lunch time brought good news, Sirius, Peter and James hurtled into the hospital wing and ran up to Remus.
“Madam Pomfrey said where only aloud 10 minutes, but I made notes for you in potions and charms. Both boring by the way you didn’t miss much”
“Shut up Potter he’s ill he doesn’t need you banging on about homework” Sirius laughed with a sly wink at Remus.
God he could literally flirt with a brick wall Remus thought.
“I’m fine guys you didn’t have to visit honestly”
“Yeah, but you were in the hospital wing all night and all of today, must have been pretty bad?” Peter said warmly
“Think it was just a bug honestly lads, I’m feeling fine now, the old hag just won’t let me go”
“Lets sneak him out” Sirius said excitedly before James interrupted him
“No if Madam Pomfrey says he needs to stay, lets listen to the professional, yeah? Come on we have transfiguration.”
“Fine bye Remus feel better!” Peter yelled running after James and Sirius.
Just like that back to pain and boredom…
Chapter 9 – The Girls (A Week after the full moon)
Remus had been in a lot of pain after the change, although Pomfrey had managed to heal most of the Wolfs damage a scar down his back kept reopening even a week later. He caught up on the days lessons he had missed in the library the day after and realised he loved the quiet, grand library and elected to spend most his free time there. Well, it had been quiet until…
Lily, Marlene and Mary were sat huddled around a small table across from Remus. Lily and Mary where giggling uncontrollably disturbing Remus’ reading,
“Can ya shut up, I’m trying to read ‘ere”, Remus muttered loud enough for the girls to hear.
“Maybe if you ask abit nicer, I’ll consider it”
Mary was a short girl, with brown curly hair and golden eyes, for such a small girl she radiated confidence and attitude.
“Why should I ask nicely it’s a fucking library” – R
“Why don’t you join us?” Mary smiled.
“Don’t invite him over he’s friends with Sirius the boy who was mean to Sev” Lily whispered
“Oh great, someone else who understands you shouldn’t be friends with Snape”, Marlene shot at Lily.
“He’s just misunderstood, he’s actually really nice” – L
Remus couldn’t help but laugh at this statement Snape was a Blood Supremacist to put it lightly.
“Come on then Lupin, join us”, Mary said with a little smirk.
“Fine what where ya all laughing at then”
“Me and Lily were laughing at Marlene because she wouldn’t join in on our game” – Mary
Remus regretted asking and joining the girls table, but Sirius and James had been inseparable since the full moon and Peter followed them round like a puppy. So maybe some new friends wouldn’t be so bad even if they were girls.
“What’s the game then?”, Remus asked half arsedly.
“Which boy in our year would you date? Lily’s never had a boyfriend you see…
“Hey! Where 11 why would I off dated a boy there gross” Lily yelled
“Well, I’ve had 3 so don’t be judgy Evans. Don’t know why Marlene’s refusing to answer? Come on McKinnon give us an answer” – Mary
“Erm... I… don’t know. Maybe… James”
“OMG! You fancy James, Remus you must set them up”
Remus could see how visibly uncomfortable Marlene was with this full situation and felt sorry for her, she clearly wasn’t as sure of herself as Mary.
“Nah can’t do that Potter’s ego might explode its already far to big, plus Marls can do 100x better” Remus gave Marlene a reassuring smile to try show he understood. Marlene’s face brightened with a smile from ear to ear and a slight blush to her usually pale cheeks.
“God get a room sounds like you fancy her Lupin” – Mary
“Can a boy and girl not be friends in your world Mary” Lupin replied sarcastically leaning back to look cool, forgetting the gaping scar on his back, he tried not to obviously flinch, but Marlene gave him a strange pitying stare. Lily and Mary began to laugh
“Do you know Lupin, your quite funny”
The group continued talking, however Lily and Remus had steered the conversation towards the potions homework due tomorrow. Mary fell asleep on the desk shortly after homework was mentioned, according to Lily this was a common occurrence, hours of hyperactivity, followed by naps in the weirdest places. Marlene was sat crossed legged on her chair messily scribbling answers while Lily and Remus helped trying not to seem condescending.
Lily gently nudged Mary to wake her up as it was getting close to curfew,
“I’M UP! I’M UP!” Mary yelled
“SHHHHHHHHHHHHH.” Madam Pince shot a warning glare across the library.
“Yeah, let’s go”
Remus and the girls hurried towards the door and then walked in pairs towards the Gryfindor common room, Lily and Mary linking arms Infront and Remus and Marlene wandering behind.
“Thanks for that earlier, Mary can be abit relentless”, Marlene said looking at her shoes avoiding eye contact.
“Believe me I know, why do you think I sit in the library constantly, it’s a brake from James and Sirius’ innit”
“I just don’t really get the deal with fancying boys, I’m just not bothered”, still looking at her feet.
Remus some how understood completely what she was saying even though neither of them said anything, they both looked at each other and just knew there was an unspoken understanding.
The group reached the common room walking through the portrait in an orderly fashion, which was strange for Remus as James and Sirius usually pushed each other to get in first.
“ER Lupin where’ve you been I need to copy your homework”
“Do your own Black” Remus replied knowing Sirius hated him using his last name.
Remus sloped up the boys stairs to their dorm, he had laughed so much with the girls his ribs began to hurt, not to mention the scar. The boys seemed to rush in directly after, all situating themselves on Remus’ bed
“Why where you with Lily, isn’t she friends with Snape” Sirius asked with a disgusted face.
“I was in the library, and they invited me to sit with them, that a problem like?” – R
“OMG! James, I think Remus has a crush. Look at how red he went when I asked, which one is it then Lupin?”, Sirius screeched
God is everyone obsessed with the idea of girlfriends and boyfriends Remus thought.
“Come on Moony, it’s a simple question?”, James said with his typical cheeky smirk.
“What did you just call me?” Remus asked scared
“What Moony?” James said confused
“Why would you call me that? Don’t call me that”
Remus felt his blood boiling, he was terrified what if they knew. They’d hate him.
“Oh, come on surely you know your name pretty has loads of connotations to the moon and wolfs, I mean Remus comes from Roman Mythology of brothers raised by wolfs”
“Oh sorry, just not used to nick names ya know” Remus calmed down, feeling embarrassed that he had let himself move to rage so quickly.
“It’s alright mate. Anyway, I’m having an early night must get to the quidditch pitch nice and early tomorrow you know” – James
“Good point” Peter ran and jumped into bed shutting his curtains, James followed suit but not Sirius no of course he didn’t. He stayed sat staring at Remus with a confused look on his face,
“Are you okay moon… Remus.”
“Yeah, sorry mate just shattered ya know”
“It seemed more then that and with you being in the hospital last…
“I said I’m fine, ya nosey prick go to bed”, Remus cut Sirius off hoping to stop this train of thought Sirius was clearly on. He could not find out it would ruin everything Remus was sure he would lose the boys if they knew about the wolf.
“Okay night mate.”
“Night Ya tit” Remus smiled
Chapter 10 – Jealousy is an ugly feeling
October
Sirius and James had detention after dinner every night the first week of October, they kept sneaking to the library after hours researching their next prank, they didn’t want to tell Remus until they had a solid plan. During their Tuesday detention with McGonagall, where they were left to do homework Sirius had a brilliant idea…
“Right hear me out” Sirius whispered to not alert Minnie
“I’m listening”
“We go to defence against the dark arts, apparently the 5th years are learning about Cornish Pixies on Friday”
“Right, what’s your point”
“Well after were released from this hell, we use the invisibility cloak to sneak into the class and steal a cage or two”
“Sirius Cornish Pixies are nightmares”
“Exactly we release them in the Slytherin common room tomorrow morning before anyone’s up”
“You are an evil genius Sirius Black”
“Boys I assume from the chatter you have both completed your assignment on Revelio” McGonagall looked over her glasses at the young boys.
“Sorry professor” James winked at Sirius and went back to his essay
McGonagall dismissed the boys after adding an extra half an hour for talking to much, they both ran to the dorm to tell Remus and Peter about the plan. But Remus was Nowhere to be seen just peter perched on his bed organising his chocolate frog wizard cards.
“Where’s Lupin?” they said in unison
“No clue, haven’t seen him since dinner think he went to the library”
It didn’t matter this couldn’t wait they assumed Remus would reappear before 12 when they planned to go steal the pixies. The boys excitedly filled Peter in, who seemed slightly apprehensive about the pixies but didn’t want to seem like a chicken so agreed to join in.
“Where is he its 12 and he doesn’t have the invisibility cloak. He can’t be in the library Pince would have kicked him out by now” Sirius said frustratingly”
“We can’t wait let’s just go” – James
The three boys fit under the cloak more comfortably as when Remus is there it makes it awkward because of his height. They made there way to the defence against the dark arts classroom none of them had seen this class as they wouldn’t be starting till there 5th year.
“Alohomora” James whispered, he’s better then Pete and Sirius at charms.
Slowly the boys started checking under cloaked cages and in locked cupboards for the pixies, Peter let out a small screech. Signalling to James that he had found them so they each picked up a cage, Peter keeping it at arm’s length.
“Pete you’ll have to hold it closer we won’t fit under the cloak”
“Fine but there so freaky”
“wimp” Sirius sniggered
“Don’t call him that, he’s not, are you Pete?”
Peter nodded hugging the cage and joining the boys under the cloak, the walk back was uneventful until they reached outside the fat lady portrait. There they saw Marlene, Mary and Remus, laughing and telling each other to be quite while making there way through to Gryfindor common room. The Boys waited 10 minutes to make sure the girls had gone to bed before they themselves snuck into Gryfindor and upstairs to their dorm.
“Where the hell have you been Lupin” Sirius hissed
“The girls know somewhere down near the lake to star gaze we wanted Lily to come but she’s to much of a goody two shoes, worried about getting caught but its pretty out of view”
“isn’t that abit dangerous, I mean the lakes near the forbidden forest?” Peter squeaked
“Who cares Peter, Remus you ditched us to hang out with the girls you’ve been doing it for ages. Me and James came up with an amazing prank and you where no where to be found” Sirius was raising his voice and pacing between the door and his bed.
“Sorry didn’t realise you needed your hand holding to do a prank Black”
“We don’t we’ll do it without you since your preoccupied and don’t call me Black”
“Fine by me… Black”
“Moony, why did you get so mad about that nickname?”
Remus raised his wand to Sirius as Sirius went to grab his from his pocket, both at their breaking point. James grabbed Sirius’ arm and dragged him away and gave Remus a warning look like a parent.
“You are both being ridiculous, Remus I’ll fill you in on the prank we’ll need all of us to pull it off. Apologise now, both of you”
“It’s not my fault Sirius is a jealous bitch because I have other friends.”
“Remus!”
James was scary when he was serious, even Remus wasn’t going to argue with, plus Remus couldn’t deal with Sirius inevitably being sulky for the next week.
“I’m Sorry, you want to fill me in on the prank then, mate.” – R
“Yeah sorry, anyway so we’ve stole Cornish pixies and at 6am tomorrow before any Slytherins are awake where releasing them in their common room.”
“So, turns out you do need me then, since I’m guessing none of you know Slytherins password this week” Remus said smugly
“Shit didn’t think about that” Sirius swearing still didn’t roll of the tongue as well as it did with Remus, but he was getting there.
“Good thing I overheard a prefect telling a first year that its Salazar,”
“Remus you beauty” James exclaimed finally looking less annoyed at Remus.
All four boys set alarms to wake up at precisely 5.30AM so they would get to the Slytherin common room at 6AM. As suspected Remus, James and Peter woke up from the alarms, Sirius on the other hand had to be levitated out and let go to crash to the floor.
“Pricks, bagsy the shower first” Sirius ran to the bathroom, so the rest of the boys talked over the plan and took it in turns to shower. After they where all dressed squeezed under the invisibility cloak having to wedge the cages between them. When they arrived at the dungeon Remus popped his head out the cloak and said “Salazar”
The door creaked open, so James and Sirius took the cages and placed them in the common room and ran back to the entry way. Remus then said “leviosa”
The cages swung open, and the boys quickly shut the door to the common room to stop the pixies coming after them.
“God, I wish I could see their faces, especially Snape the slimy twat” James laughed.
“It’s 6.30AM can we go to breakfast yet”
“God Pete, we’ve just pulled of an amazing prank and all you can think about is your stomach” – S
Chapter 11 – The aftermath
Slytherins flooded into the great hall flustered with there clothes torn and pixies pulling on their hair. It took 5 teachers to get rid of all the pixies and Dumbledore gave a speech at lunch saying the people responsible would be severely punished with house points being deducted and detentions for the rest of the month. The four boys tried there best to stop laughing but seeing Bellatrix Black running around screaming with a pixie in her hair while Narcissa tried to kill it, was a sight to behold. Sirius was in stitches walking to their next class (charms), when they were cornered by Snape and his posey.
“I know it was you, you filthy blood traitors. I will get you back for this you imbeciles!” Snape spat
“Aww did Snape have a bad wake up call” Sirius mocked
Peter and James where in hysterics but Remus could see Snape and his goons gets angrier so had his hand on his wand ready to defend his friends.
“Come on Sev, there not worth it there just childish idiots” Lily had appeared from nowhere, she gave Remus a disappointed look and he found himself mouthing sorry at her. He didn’t want the girls to be mad as he enjoyed their little trips to the library plus, he didn’t ever get detention when hanging out with Lily.
“He’s such a tool” Sirius said to the boys
“What does a tool mean?”
“God Pete you really can be thick sometimes” Remus didn’t mean that to come out so blunt, but the full moon was fast approaching so his patience was wearing thin.
“Remus that was uncalled for”
“Yeah, I know James, sorry Pete”
Charms flew by because Sirius and James spent the class tormenting Snape, they had just been taught Rictusempra and apparently Snape is very ticklish. They both got detentions that night, but it was 100 percent worth it to see Snape slither off his chair laughing uncomfortably.
