Long enough

Summary:

after years of traveling with the Doctor (and pining for him), all it takes is a brief visit from Captain Harkness to bring feelings to light

Work Text:

You’d been traveling with the Doctor for a few years now, long enough to see his face change. Leather and sharp lines relaced with toothy grins and intricately patterned suit ties. Even through it all, you loved him. How could you not? Especially when he ran about the TARDIS, flicking switches, pressing buttons, and pulling levers so emphatically.
“And here we are,” the Doctor smiled, flipping the last switch with a flourish, the TARDIS landing with a small rumble. You stopped questioning what ‘here’ meant a long time ago. Instead, you allowed the Doctor to grab your hand as he ran out of the ship, a boyish grin plastered on his face. You had no option but to follow him, as you always did. The more time you spent with the man, the more convinced you were that you would follow him to the ends of the universe. Literally.
You looked at the biome around you warily, taking in the fog and rock around you. The Doctor was rambling on about the atmosphere but you weren’t listening. Instead, your eyes caught on the body laying on the ground outside the TARDIS.
“Oh my god!” You gasped, rushing to the figure. The Doctor followed behind you much slower, his brow furrowing in concentration. You placed your fingers on the side of the unconscious man’s neck, checking for a pulse. After a few seconds, you looked back up at the Doctor's face solemnly and shook your head. The Doctor showed no remorse, a reaction that was severely unusual for the man. “Doctor?” You asked confused. Before he could respond, the seemingly lifeless body next to you sprang to life, gasping for air. Startled, you let out a yelp before regaining your composure.
“Captain Jack Harkness,” The man smiled, running a finger delicately across your jawline. “And who are you?” he rasped.
“y/n,” you whispered, blushing slightly.
“Nice to meet you, y/n,” Jack smirked.
“Oh don’t start!” The Doctor shouted from behind you.
“Doctor!” You ridiculed, glaring at him.
Now noticing the Time Lord behind you, the captain sat up, “Doctor,” He regarded.
“Captain,” He nodded back.
“You two know each other?” You asked, confused.
“He traveled with me, before you that is,” The Doctor shrugged. “Same as ever though.”
“You can talk!” Jack retortedplayfully.
“Oh yeah!” The Doctor laughed, waving a hand around his face, “regeneration.” The Doctor smiled widely and motion towards the TARDIS, leading the three of you inside. While he wasn’t interested much in Jack, he knew the man needed something important, or he wouldn’t have shown up in such a manner. Once inside, the Doctor quickly busied himself at the control center for the ship, though you had been with him long enough to know he wasn’t really doing anything.
“How did you get here?” You asked the captain, who launched into a speech explaining the vortex manipulator around his wrist.
“He’s not the only one who can time-travel,” He grinned, pointing to the Doctor.
“That is not time traveling,” the Doctor argued from a few feet away. “I’ve got a sports car, and you’ve got a space hopper,” he argued, with a twinge of whine in his voice. You giggled at the boys, rolling your eyes.
“Regardless, it burned out, leaving me in the 20th century waiting to coincide with the Doctor,” Jack continued.
“But that makes you more than 100 years old!” You exclaimed.
“And looking good too,” He winked. You could have sworn you heard the Doctor groan in the background.
“And now you’re here?” You asked, looking up at the captain through your eyelashes.
“Now I’m here,” He grinned, leaning in closer to you.
“Why are you here?” The Doctor asked, looking at Jack through curious eyes.
“Figured you could fix this,” He said, slipping the vortex manipulator off his wrist and chucking it over to the Doctor. The Doctor glared at the object in his hands, buzzing it with his screwdriver. It only took a few seconds before the Doctor threw the wristband back to Jack, who caught it delicately and slipped it back onto his wrist.
“What am I supposed to do if it burns out again?”
“Wait around 100 years for me,” The Doctor shrugged. You couldn’t tell if he was joking or not. You shook your head and pulled a pen out of your pocket.
“Here,” you said, reaching for the captain’s hand, “For emergencies,” You said, scribbling your number on the backside of his hand.
“Emergencies only?” Jack smirked, not moving his hand from yours.
The Doctor couldn’t stand this. He was used to Jack’s antics, but they never bothered him as much as they did now. He didn’t like the thought of Jack existing around you. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, he wanted you to himself. Fed up, he made his way out of the control room.
“Well.. uh, I suppose not,” You stumbled, watching the Doctor sulk away. Why on earth was he acting like this? You shook your head, turning your attention back to the man in front of you.
“100 years!” You exclaimed, “you must have some crazy stories!”
“A few,” Jack smiled mischievously, “I’ve had my fair share of trouble.”
“What’s your most bizzare one?” You laughed.
“Queen Mary had me hung for borrowing a tea set from the palace.”
“Borrowing?” You threw your head back laughing.
“I didn’t think it was that important!” Jack defended.
“I bet you’re the reason they have signs at the Grand Canyon telling you not to jump off.”
“I did that once!”
As much as he tried to block it out, the Doctor could still hear your conversation from the other room. He didn’t like the way Jack was making you laugh. You never laughed like that with him. He’d jumped into the Grand Canyon once too, and you never found it this funny. It hardly seemed fair.
“Can I ask you a question?” Jack asked, his voice sultry.
“Sure,” you blushed, absentmindedly picking at the hem of your shirt.
“Will you go on a date with me?”
A large crash came from the Doctor’s direction, followed by a few smaller ones.
“I- um,” you mumbled, attention more focused on the noise. You shook your head and looked back at the captain sheepishly.
“Ah,” Jack said, finally understanding, “you have your sights set on someone else.”
Your eyes widened in shock. You hadn’t thought your feelings for the Doctor had been that obvious. A scarlet flush filled your cheeks as you nodded slightly, eyes glued to your dirty trainers.
“That’s perfectly fine,” Jack said, still smiling bright as ever. “I best be going then,” he said, gathering his coat.
“You can still call me,” you said quietly, “if you need help,” you paused, “or if you ever want to tell me more stories.”
Jack smiled back at you, “I’ll keep that in mind,” he added before slipping out the TARDIS door. Once they had closed, you slid your back against the doors with your eyes closed. When you opened them again the Doctor had poked his head into the console room.
“Where did he go?” He asked warily.
“Back out into the universe,” you shrugged casually. The Doctor nodded slowly before entering the room again. He made his way over to the control panel and started flicking switches. Unable to think of a single place to go, the Doctor threw the TARDIS into the vast expanses of space, switching the breaks on so the ship wouldn’t float away. You didn’t pay much attention to him and made your way over to your chair, settling back for whatever journey the Doctor had planned.
“When’s your date?” The Doctor asked, pulling you out of the silence.
“Pardon?” You asked, taken aback.
“With Jack.”
“I’m not going on a date with Jack.”
The Doctor turned away from the ship to look at you. His eyes bore into yours, searching for anything. Overwhelmed by his stare, you turned away.
“Good,” The Doctor said, so quiet you weren’t even sure you heard him right. The little word made you so confused.
“What do you mean?” You said before you could really think about it, finally returning your gaze to the Doctor. He pulled his eyes away from you, shifting his attention to the floor as he rubbed his neck anxiously.
“I just didn’t think it was a good idea.”
“Are you jealous?” You laughed, more as a joke than anything. You knew the Doctor couldn’t share your affections. He’d made that very clear. You were a human and he was a Time Lord. It would never work.
“Yes.”
Your wide eyes shot upwards, catching the Doctor’s own gaze. You couldn’t believe your own ears. The Doctor. Jealous. Over you.
“I-“ you stumbled, not sure where to start. The Doctor turned away, embarrassed and seemingly done with the topic. You didn’t want to let it go that easily though, you’d waited long enough.
In one swift motion you moved from your chair to the Doctor’s side, pulling his face in your direction. You looked into his honey eyes, and found yourself getting lost in their loving stare. You moved your own eyes from his, looking down at his lips before returning your gaze to his.
Deciding you were done waiting, you pulled him down to you, lips crashing into his. Startled at first, the Doctor took a moment to melt into the kiss. Before long, he had found his rhythm, arms wrapping around your waist. Your own arms made their way up his neck, fingers tangled in his messy hair. You couldn’t help but relax into the kiss, your lips fit perfectly against the Doctor’s. He caught your bottom lip between his teeth gently, the action eliciting a small moan from the back of your throat, the noise making the Doctor smile into your kiss. The Doctor was strong with the movements of his mouth, but his thumbs rubbed reassuring circles against your hipbones. The two contrasting actions were so very him, you couldn’t help but smile.
Before long you had to pull back slightly, panting from the heated kiss. Not wanting to go far, you rested your forehead on the Doctor’s.
“I can’t tell you how long I’ve wanted to do that,” you breathed.
“I have an idea,” The Doctor smiled before crashing his lips back into yours.
This kiss was more urgent, like his life depended on it. The Doctor was all hands, his slender fingers ghosting from your hips to the sides of your face and back. His gentle touch comforted you in a way you had priorly thought was impossible. His tongue brushed your lips lightly, begging entry. You emphatically obeyed, granting him entry. The swift movements he made caused you to gasp lightly, fingers tugging at his hair desperately. The Doctor loved it. He loved the sounds you made, and the way your hands begged for more of him. It prided him that he could make you like this.
His strong hands commanded your hips, leading you backwards until your legs hit the TARDIS console. With a small hop you seated yourself on the lip, your mouth never detaching from his. You separated your knees, allowing the Doctor to move between them. With one hand on the small of your back and the other rubbing your thigh, you leaned back into the Doctor’s touch. In doing so, you managed to flip the switch behind you. Within moments the TARDIS shook, throwing the Doctor back into the railing with you following behind.
As you crashed into his chest he wrapped a protective arm around your waist, laughing slightly. Another tremor sent the pair of you back into the console roughly. The Doctor’s free hand snaked behind you, flipping the brakes back on. After a slight shaking, the ship returned to it’s stationary stance. After a few seconds of silence you burst into laughter, your arm still draped across the Doctor’s shoulders. The Doctor laughed along, beaming down at you.
Before long, the Doctor’s lips had reunited with yours impatiently. He had to make up for lost time, after all.
