Work Text:

The rancid smell of rotting flesh permeates the dimly lit alley, a combination of moist garbage and the decomposing corpse that would make any rookie detective lose their lunch the moment it hit their nostrils.
Normally this is where my tobacco pipe would be most useful but this case was so gruesome that it barely did a thing, try as I might I cannot mask the unbearable smell of iron that threatens to expell the dinner Gretchen made.

The victim was identified as Pedroni Romulos notorious for carrying out hits for the Mafia. Got arrested. Testified against the Mafia for a shorter sentence. Released. And now currently in pieces.

The Mafia. The scourge of this country, they practically run the whole town. The Government, The Police Force, you name it they got pockets deep enough to make them their personal lapdogs, it makes me sick.

The ones that they don't control they scare. Send some men to beat them, shoot up their houses, hold their family for ransom, the usual scare tactics these scum partake in.

Can I handle the price justice can hammer down on me? I have to, its my sworn duty, my mission. My purpose.
But should Gretchen have to suffer the consequences of me investigating Mafia?
Mafia are the lowest of the low, lord knows what they'll do to her as payback.

If I were a better detective, a better man. This would have been done by Saturday. But I will admit I am scared, not for me, but for Gretchen. Mafia is a cancer that will eat through anything that it gets caught in it.

I cant finish this and I know it won't be finished with me.
I am sorry Gretchen I love you too much.
