Work Text:

It’s dark.

Shouta mused, scarf gently flowing in the air. He was standing on a rooftop. Tonight was quite a peaceful night, he supposed. He stopped a few robberies here and there, helped a lost kid or two, and fed some alley cats. Compared to his other days, he saw this to be quite peaceful.

Shouta glanced around the corners. Soft light illuminated the roofs, decorating with a few flickering street lights scattered around. The loud, busy noises of Musutafu had been drowned by the silence, giving the city an ethereal beauty that was rarely captured on those travel pamphlets he received.

He sat down, taking a deep breath. Musutafu at night was his favorite.

When was the last time he allowed himself to slow down and breathe like this? When was the last time he had actually taken his time to look at the moon?

Shouta didn’t know.

Perhaps between being a teacher at day and a hero at night, he didn’t allow himself some time to wind down. He could blame the workload and responsibilities that came with his title of a hero, but deep down he knew it wasn’t really the case.

Well, not the first reason, he supposed.

He used to hate the soft light that came with the moon, and the silence that echoed it. It wasn’t hard to understand why, when it came to someone like Shouta. He hated it, hated how it looked. Because on the day he had lost someone who used to be his world, the moon had been very beautiful that night.

It was an irony, truly; but Shouta thought the rain that came with the funeral was an apology. It fitted with his mood at that time, afterall.

The pain never really left him as he looked up to the moon he loathed so much, but it was more bearable. Like a chronic pain that ached from time to time. Shouta supposed he shouldn’t have blamed the moon, as he was a man who stood by logic. But he was still human, and his heart was a living being on its own.

He reached into his pockets, fingers grazing over a small, velvety box. Shouta gently shook his head, a soft smile bloomed on his lips. It was quite a sight for such a stoic man as Shouta: locks of hair gently blown by the wind, smiling like an idiot while gazing out into nowhere.

Shouta was reminded of green hair and dimpled smiles, of bright, emerald eyes and freckles adorning his cheeks. He remembered why he was here: he was gonna propose to the love of his life.

The thought caused his stomach to churn in excitement and anxiety. He loved Izuku, really. Shouta would take a bullet for the man and die for him if he had to. They hadn’t been dating for long, starting out from a reluctant vigilante-hero partnership. Shouta had spent his days chasing out Polaris, the infamous vigilante of Musutafu, the source of Tsukauchi’s headache and increased caffeine dosage. The vigilante was smart and cunning, Shouta would give him that, considering how many times he was able to escape from his bindings.

Shouta never thought that somewhere along the lines, the chase that turned into partnership would turn into a loving relationship. Even though they had only been dating for a year, Shouta had never been so sure of his decision. Not even when he was dating Emi or Hizashi, not even when he was single did he see a future as far ahead as when he was with Izuku. Their love was strong, even when they moved in not fully three months into their relationship. The freckled man gave him a reason to love and to live every time he woke up. And Shouta would spend the rest of his life to make sure the greenette knew how much he loved him.

Speaking of Polaris, a slight ‘thud’ next to him snapped Shouta out of his thoughts. He glanced over to the side. There was Izuku in all his vigilante glory, with matching yellow goggles and a baton attached to his back. His dark green iconic hood gently flew in the air, revealing green fluffy locks he had come to love.

Izuku really was beautiful, and Shouta was a damn lucky bastard to bag such an angel.

“Hey there Eraserhead, long time no see, huh?”

Did he mention that Izuku was a dorky idiot?

“Drop the act, bunny. You literally just saw me this afternoon.”

“But Shoutaaa,” the greenette whined. “Don’t you remember the sweet old times? Just me and you, running through the rooftops, stopping crimes and kicking asses like a badass duo.”

“The time when you were a big headache to me?” Shouta playfully retorted.

Izuku smiled cheekily, nuzzling next to the ravenhead. “ Your headache.”

Shouta huffed. “ My headache.”

A comfortable silence settled between the couple. Both leaned on each other as the night went on, all the exhaustion slowly melted away as they basked in each other’s warm presence. It was these moments when Shouta got to watch his lover up close, to trace along freckled cheeks that were painted a bright red every time he teased. It was these moments that Shouta realized he had fallen in love more and more with the greenette, just when he had thought he couldn’t have fallen more than that. Life was rough on the both of them; they had their ups and downs, had their fair share of trauma and tears. But they now had each other; and as time went on, they healed each other’s wounds. If Shouta had been more sappy, he would dare say that they were soulmates .

“-love? Shouta?”

He snapped himself out of his thoughts, meeting his lover’s curious yet worried look. He had been drifting away a lot.

“Yes?”

“Is there any reason why you called us out here?”

Ah yes there it was. Anxiety came hitting Shouta twice as hard. He was supposed to propose to the love of his life. The thought excited Shouta equally as dreadful. What if Izuku didn’t want to? What if they were not ready? What if Izuku rejected him? What if Izuku realized that he could do so much better than Shouta, could find someone who loved him in a way that Shouta never could?

Love really was driving him insane.

“N-Not that I’m opposed to this idea, I’m very grateful that we spend time together. But normally you wouldn’t do something like this, considering that your schedule is very busy- Ah! Your work! Ohmygod-“

Fuck anxiety.

Shouta was gonna woo the fuck out of his bunny and pampered him for the rest of his life. And if any villain interrupted, dear lord have mercy on them, because Shouta wouldn’t.

“Bunny.”

The pet name shut Izuku’s ramblings off in an instant.

“Come with me.”

Shouta stood up, grabbed Izuku’s hands and dragged him along. They walked to a balcony nearby, and Izuku let out a small gasp as his hands went to cover his mouth.

The roof was beautiful . Decorated by fairy lights and candles, petals scattered around the floor. Small bouquets of flowers adorned the railings, soft yellow lights illuminating the scene so beautifully. Amazement and utter love filled the greenette’s eyes as he wandered around the balcony, admiring the stunning view in front of him.

“Shouta, this is amazing! But this isn’t our anniversary-”

“Izuku.”

The vulnerability of Shouta’s words prompted Izuku to turn around. Another gasp left him as tears welled up in his eyes.

Shouta was down on one knee, a velvety box held so carefully in his hand.

“Izuku, ever since the first time I met you, I’ve already known you were an important part of my life. All those days chasing after you, it made me realize how much of an amazing person you are. You are beautiful and smart and amazing, and I love everything about you. A-And as time goes on, you give me more reasons to love you, you remind me of the biggest honor of my life: to love and care for you. Whether it was our chase every night-”

Izuku chuckled wetly at that, tears streaming down his face as his heart thumped loudly in his chest.

“-or it was our dates, I am reminded every single time that you are mine to cherish. I know that life has been hard on you, and I am so, so proud that you are here with me. I am not good with words, nor am I the best person to love. I can’t give you the promise of happily ever after, because my job doesn’t allow me to. But I can promise you that for every day we spend together, I will cherish you with all my heart. I can promise you that for every time I wake up with you in my arms, I will hold you close. I can promise you that as long as my heart is still beating, it will always beat for you. I love you so much, and our relationship is perfect. But I am a selfish man, and I can't help but want to make you mine forever. So, bunny, love of my life,-”

Izuku’s vision was blurry with tears, sobs racked over his body. As Shouta’s calloused hands gently opened the box, he could feel his breathing stopped.

“- Izuku Midoriya, will you make me the happiest bastard alive and marry me?”

When Shouta didn’t hear a response, his heart dropped. Was Izuku gonna reject him?

“Yes! Yes, please, Shouta!”

Shouta’s shoulder sagged with relief. He looked up at the crying man, love shone bright in his eyes. He gently grabbed the hand of his now-fiance, sliding the customized diamond ring onto Izuku’s fingers. Seeing the action up close caused another round of tears to well up in the greenette's eyes.

“This-this ring is beautiful, I-”

“You deserve only the best, Izuku.”

Shouta swept a crying Izuku into his arms, holding the greenette tightly as he sobbed his eyes out. The ravenhead could feel tears pricking in his eyes, which was a miracle considering his quirk. As he hugged his bunny, he knew he had made the right choice.

“I love you, Shouta.”

“I love you, Izuku.”

Two souls tangled in each other, embracing their love as the moon shone bright on them, giving them its blessing for a lifetime and even more.
