The Day of Night

Summary:

It seems the cycle of Ramshackle being full of life and then left to rot won't end, not anytime soon at least. The dorm feels empty now that the beloved prefect is gone forever.

Notes:

i'm curious if anyone gets what i did with the title but if not i'm gonna say it anyway, i listened to silent hill's ost called the day of night while i wrote this so i named it like that lol

Work Text:

Ramshackle dorm once had been bustling with life and students were scared away by the ghosts lingering the dorm. Ramshackle, once so lively and well was left abandoned to decay over the years.
After years of loneliness and boredom for the ghosts that inhabited the place, Ramshackle had once again been bustling with life, though this time instead of dozens of students there now were just two: a magicless human and a monster cat who breathed fire.

Many people from campus knew their names. Some liked them, and some less, but one thing was clear: they were determined and they had saved the students voluntarily or not. They were a force to be reckoned with.

The two of them had made many friendships along the way, many important memories and prized possessions that had no value to anyone but themselves.
But... who would've thought their life would be cut so short? No one had been expecting the magicless human to depart this world so soon. A saddening departure, one that nobody wanted.

The dear Ramshackle prefect that was known by their friends as cheerful and full of life was, ironically enough, now devoid of it.
And the poor Grim, now left alone in Ramshackle, his hench-human gone, had been affected the most by the prefect's lacking presence.

Nothing was how it was before now with the prefect dead, it was odd to see Grim walking so silently to his next class. The Grim everyone knew seemed to have died along with the prefect. It was depressing, really.

Even the most powerful mage in Night Raven College wasn't taking their death any easier. The prefect, the only friend Malleus had got, the only person who had not been afraid of him, was dead. It was impossible for him to believe and take this as fact. There was no way, as much as he tried to deny it, became increasingly difficult to maintain the facade. There was no denying the fact his only friend was dead and there was no way to bring them back.
Every single student could see how the prince of Briar Valley was mourning for their friend. Before, nobody wanted to talk to him, even as much as looking at him for too long was because everyone intimidated by him. They did not want to upset Malleus in any way and so, they avoided him. Now they were pitying him, but no one tried to tell him that, no one tried to comfort him because of their fear of him.

Malleus was doing his nightly routine of stopping by Ramshackle to lay down next to the glass case that contained photos of the prefect with their friends, objects that were prized by the prefect, little things that reminded the students of them, and most importantly the ghost camera that had all the moments they had deemed to be important.

Even now Malleus was waiting for them to open the front door and greet him like every other evening, as if this never happened to begin with. But all that wishing was in vain, even he, one of the most powerful mages from Twisted Wonderland, did not have a solution for bringing you back to life, and he most certainly did not want to experiment in the fear of messing up.

And so, the moon had become once again Malleus' only companion.
Life is a thin thread that could rip in any moment, but that could also tie with other threads creating strong bonds that could not be replaced. And it was certain no one would ever forget them.
