Work Text:
Valentine's day was coming up, and you had an idea of what you wanted to get your Valentine. You went to the home ec classroom to ask your teacher for help. Saguaro stood there, tall and hefty. He was helping out a classmate of yours so you waited in the corner. Soon after he was done, Saguaro looked your way and smiled. You felt your heart flutter as he came your way.
"Y/N, what a delight to see you! How can I help?" He asks.
"I-I wanted to make a chocolate cake for Valentine's day," You say.
“Ah, I see. For someone special, I presume?” Saguaro ask. Blushing, you simply nod your head. He chuckles.
“I can help you with that. I believe I have all the ingredients for one. Was there anything you wanted to add to it?” he asks.
“Peanut butter chips. I think he likes peanut butter,” you say shyly.
“I definitely have those,” he laughs and then leans close to you, “between you and me, I can hardly keep myself from snacking on them, so it’s good that they’re going to good use.”
You blush and nod, which earns you a ruffling of your hair from Saguaro.
“Okay, first things first, ingredients. Can you grab the eggs, butter, and milk from the fridge?” Saguaro asks. You nod and rush to the fridge. It only takes you a moment to grab the listed items and rush back to the station where Saguaro is. In your haste, you trip and fall, dropping the ingredients. The milk and butter are fine, but the eggs.
“Oh dear,” Saguaro says as he hurries over to you. He gives you a hand, which you accept it.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to,” you say, almost in tears. You’re hurt and frustrated, but Saguaro simply puts a hand on your shoulder.
“It’s okay, Y/N, it was an accident. Why don’t you go to the cafeteria and see if the kitchen can give you some eggs, okay? We should need only two,” Saguaro says. Wiping the tears from your eyes, you nod and go to the cafeteria. Heading back, you make sure that you’re careful this time. You make it back to the home ec room with all two eggs intact. Saguaro has the station prepped and ready.
“Y/N, I’m glad to see you have the eggs! I have the ingredients ready whenever you’re ready,” Saguaro says.
“What do we do first?” you ask.
“Do you know how to preheat an oven?” Saguaro asks. You nod and go to the oven to do so. It takes you a second since you don’t do it very often, but you’re able to.
“Very good! Now, let’s mix the dry ingredients,” Saguaro says. He measures them out and hands them to you to pour into the mixing bowl. You use a fork to get them all mixed up.
“Now, we add the wet ingredients and mix with the mixer. Luckily, I have a stand mixer so we don’t have to worry about wearing out your arms,” Saguaro says, patting your arm. You blush slightly. After adding the ingredients, you connect the bowl to the stand mixer.
“We’ll want to mix it at medium speed for about two minutes,” Saguaro explains.
“Okay,” you say.
“Wait-” Saguaro tries to warn you, but you’ve already turned the mixer on, sending flour flying into your face. You blink.
“Oh dear, are you alright, Y/N?” Saguaro asks. You sneeze and nod. He brings the bottom of his apron to your face and wipes the flour off.
“I was going to say start slowly,” he chides, but he sounds more concerned than angry. He gets the last of the flour off your face and helps you clean the counter while the cake batter mixes. He takes care of the last step of making the batter, which was adding boiling water to it. (Probably for the better, since you’ve been so clumsy all day) You oil the pan.
“One last thing!” Saguaro says. You turn to him holding a bag of peanut butter chips.
“I thought it would be best if it was added after the batter cooled a little so they wouldn’t melt.”
You smile and add the chips before pouring the batter into the pan. The cake only took about ten minutes to bake.
“What kind of frosting were you thinking of putting on it?” Saguaro asks. You think for a moment before answering, “How hard is buttercream?”
Saguaro laughs and helps you make the buttercream frosting while the cake cools. It’s pretty simple; just mix the ingredients in the mixer. You decorate the cake with minimal help and look upon it with a smile.
“It looks great, Y/N,” Saguaro says over your shoulder, “whoever your valentine is is very lucky.”
You blush.
“So, when do you plan to give it to him,” he asks.
“I was thinking today. But can you come with me?” you ask, blushing.
“Of course, I can, but I won’t be much use,” Saguaro says. He follows you to the schoolyard. Luckily for you, it’s empty.
You turn around and present your cake to Saguaro.
“Mr. Saguaro! I want to thank you for being my teacher!” you say, blushing deeply. Saguaro looks surprised.
“You mean the cake was for me?” he asks. You nod. He chuckles and ruffles your hair.
“Thank you, Y/N. This means so much to me,” he says, taking the cake. Suddenly, you run away, leaving a perplexed home ec teacher. He chuckles again and goes back to class.
