Chapter Text
You weren’t any old, ordinary witch. In fact, you were descended from a long line of Mages, magic users that could wield pure magic in your hands. No wands required, just dizzying heights of power in the palm of you hand; plus, it made a pretty cool light show when you used it.
The down side, however, was that most other witches and wizards feared you, and just exactly what you were capable of. It probably didn’t help that your mother was the most powerful Black Mage in recorded history, and had been one of Voldemort’s more radical followers of course.
But you were nothing like your mum, you were a red mage, fuelled by passion and love, rather than darkness and pain. Most people never took the time to learn the difference however; they heard L/N, and simply assumed you’d be bad.
That was exactly what happened the moment Professor McGonagall had called your name,
“F/N L/N” a gasp rippled across the great hall,
“L/N?!”
“They let her in?”
“Is… is she one of them?”
You stood stock still, just you and a set of red headed twins were left to be sorted, and you simply found that you couldn’t move. Your own hair was a brilliant shade of Y/H/C, and you realised sadly that your moment of anonymity had come to an end.
“You’ve got this, just ignore them” whispered the twin closest to you, who gave you a reassuring smile and a wink.
You nodded and stiffly and made your way towards the sorting hat.
“Well, well, well, what have we here? I haven’t had one of your kind up here in a very long time. Now, I’d have assumed you’d be a shoe in for Slytherin, but that’s not who you are at all is it? It takes a lot of bravery to come up here with a name like yours, but there are brains here too. So, what to make you? An eagle or a lion?”
You suddenly realised you hadn’t taken a breath since you sat down, and so you gulped in a breath shakily,
“I always wanted to be in Ravenclaw” you thought to yourself, completely unaware that the hat could hear you.
“Oh really? Heck, why not? RAVENCLAW!” he declared at long last, much to the shock of the hall, who had also assumed you’d be a shoe in for Slytherin.
Unlike with your fellow first years, the table didn’t erupt in cheers, in fact it stayed completely silent, except for one dark-haired, blue-eyed girl who suddenly hollered,
“Woohoo!” at the top of her lungs enthusiastically.
“Hey, I’m Raven” she said as you took her seat at the table opposite her
“Hi, I’m F/N... and thanks”
“No worries, I’ve got your back girl” you smiled widely at your new companion, glad to have made at least one friend today.
The twins were quickly sorted into Gryffindor with a great fanfare, dinner came and went, and before you knew it, it was time to ascend the staircases to Ravenclaw Tower.
You caught a brief glimpse of the twin who had smiled at you (Frank, you thought his name was), and waved at him as you both headed towards the staircases.
“Do you know him or something?” Raven asked as she linked her arm with yours.
“No, just met him, but he was nice when I was getting sorted”
“How do you know that’s the same one though? They’re darn similar”
“I have younger triplet sisters; you get to learn how to tell them apart”
“Woah, that’s a lot of kids all at once!”
You smiled at the thought of your sisters, Magdalena (Peggy), Morgana and Morrigan, three totally different characters. Peggy who was feisty, passionate and full of love and hope, Morgana who was shy, stuck to herself, and rarely said boo to a goose, and Morrigan, who was disturbingly like your mother.
“It’s definitely a busy household back home” You responded, already missing your sisters and their antics.
“Do you have any siblings?” You asked your new friend,
“One big brother and two big sisters, Jett, Nova and Ebony, they’re all in Slytherin, so I’m totally breaking the mould too”
“Ha, so we should totally stick together”
“Girl, you are so my backup”
You both laughed as you climbed the staircases together, suddenly becoming aware of just how far up you had to climb.
“Seriously, isn’t there a faster way that won’t kill my legs?” Raven asked
“Maybe we can petition for broomsticks to take us to the top” you joked as your calves began to tingle and you fell in to a comfortable silence.
“Hey, can I ask…”
“You wanna know if I’m a mage huh?”
“Is that, like, totally rude to ask?”
“Nah, it’s okay. I’m a mage, but I’m not like my mum. I’m a red mage”
“What’s the difference?”
“Black mages like my mum use dark magic and do dark things, white mages like my sister Peggy only do healing magic, and then red mages are the emotional ones, all fire, love, passion, that kinda thing”
“Woah, that’s totally epic. I thought there were gold ones too? My mum used to read us “Bertha the Golden Mage” when we were little” Raven reminisced as she took a short break from climbing up stairs.
“Oh my god, I love that book” you laughed “I’ve never heard of golden mages actually existing though, they’re like a myth or something”
“Aww, too bad, Bertha was always such a badass”
“SO true. She was great”
“Hey, you two, keep moving please!” Called the Ravenclaw prefect that neither of you had caught the name of.
“How is she not totally dead in a pile right now?” Raven asked as you begrudgingly began moving again.
“Years of practice and thighs of steel?”
“Pah, that’ll be us one day boo, Raven and F/N, thighs of steel!”
You both laughed as you playfully shoved Raven,
“Yeah, okay, I’ll believe that when I see it”.
The rest of the climb passed by in silence as you both clambered up step after step, not able to believe just how far you had to climb, just to go to bed!
But your ordeal eventually came to an end as the first years and their prefects came to the door to Ravenclaw tower at long last.
“Now, it’s become a Ravenclaw tradition, that the last first year up the stairs has to answer the riddle to enter the tower, I’m pretty sure it was a tie between you two, so get up here and get us all in the tower”
You and Raven exchanged a look, hoping beyond hope the prefect hadn’t meant you. A glance behind you told you you were bum out of luck however, so you made your way to the front of the queue that had formed on the stairs around you both.
“So, what, we just answer a riddle and we get let in?” Raven asked the prefect.
“Bingo! Nothing more to it”
You couldn’t help but wonder what a bingo was, but thought it best not to ask, instead approaching the Ravenclaw portrait with Raven at your side.
“Ahem. Hi, we’d like to come in please” You declared to the bored portrait.
“Very well, answer this riddle to pass. What gets wetter as it dries?”
“What? What gets wetter as it… That’s so dumb… That’s not… I got nothing boo” Raven turned to you; totally convinced you were about to make total arses of yourselves.
You thought for a moment, it had to have a logical answer, what sort of things dry other things, thus in turn getting themselves wet? You felt as if a lightbulb had just gone off.
“A towel!” You declared, totally ecstatic, and proud of yourself.
“Very good, congratulations, and welcome to Ravenclaw” The portrait smiled warmly as it swung open to allow you entrance.
“Nice work!” Raven high-fived you, totally impressed you’d worked it out so quickly.
“I guess I really do belong in Ravenclaw” You said with a big smile.
