I landed on the side of the building. My muscles ached after the long night. I hadn't fought any big names, but enough thugs added up and I was feeling a bit chewed up and spat out. The window squeaked slightly as I opened it to crawl in.
The lights in the apartment were off. I pulled my mask off over my head and ran my fingers through my dirty, sweaty hair. Hours of wearing the mask left my head sensitive, something I never really got used to. I made my way through the dark, the layout of the furniture cemented in my brain enough that I managed not to smack my shins on anything.
I opened the door to the bedroom, trying my best not to make any more noise. The weak street light filtered through the window and bathed Felicia's silvery hair. She always looked so innocent in her sleep, free of any sneaky schemes or devious plans. Now, most of those plans were very low stakes, but I never forgot the capacity she had for pure mischief.
I shed my gloves and my top, throwing them into the laundry hamper on the way to the bed. Everything smelled, well, ripe after patrol, but I couldn't resist running my finger across her cheek. She twitched slightly, turning her face into my touch. I dropped a quick kiss on her forehead before I walked off to the bathroom.
The day's stress washed away under the harsh spray of the showerhead. I lathered up and spent some time letting the heat soak into my muscles. My eyes started to drift closed, so I called it good and climbed out of the shower. I grabbed a pair of underwear to pull on and climbed into the bed.
I pulled her back into me as I settled into the soft pillow and welcoming mattress. She groaned. "Back from patrol?" she said sleepily.
I pulled her hair away from her neck to kiss it gently. "I am. I didn't mean to wake you up."
She wiggled her butt slightly, scooting closer to me. "I don't mind. I like knowing when you come back." She grabbed my hand and lifted it to her mouth for a kiss.
The sleep that had found me in the shower started creeping up again, lulled by the softness of Felicia's skin and the warmth of the blankets. "I'll always come back to you. I love you."
The last thing I heard before I drifted off to sleep was "Love you too, Spider."
