Work Text:
Kou can't help but think back to the beginning of his and Subaru's friendship. Sure it was mostly Kou initiating everything but still! He remembers the first time he suggested they both have a sleepover at the Mukami manor once their rivalry had turned into a somewhat tolerable friendship. Subaru's response to it being "what are you fucking childish... I don't want to go to some sleepover when I can sleep in my own home?!" to which the blond simply egged him on. "I think little Sakamaki is just scared because no one's ever invited him over to their house before" and that, that worked. Subaru took his bait hook, line and sinker.
"I'm not... I'm not fuckin' scared of some dumb shit like that... fuck off, I'll go. What do I need to bring?" Yes the youngest Sakamaki had never really had a friend before(he'd deny it if you said Kou was his friend though) so he doesn't know the etiquette of staying over at someone else's house over night. He liked to keep to himself so why should he need to know that?
"Oh and don't bring your coffin, Ruki will get mad if you lug that thing inside, and I'm not having you put it in my room."
Subaru clicked his tongue "Tch... who said I was going to sleep in your room anyway?! Don't be deciding that shit on your own!" The fact that he wasn't allowed to bring his coffin pissed him off but if he backed out now Kou would keep pestering him about it until he eventually gave in. "Just bring a sleeping bag or you can sleep on the floor with some blankets in my room? Or the couch but.... my brothers might bug you then? Or... you can share the bed with me? We're friends after all so what's the big deal?"
Subaru tried to ignore the thought of how sharing a bed with the guy that pissed him off to no end turned to whatever this weird friendship they had going on was made him feel.
"Oh and just bring whatever you think you'll need I guess?" Kou seemed pleased that he'd accepted (more like forced and cornered into by Kou but still.) "Just come meet me after school tomorrow and I'll show you the way. You've never been there right?"
"No?! Why would I?!" Subaru snapped back at Kou. "Perfect then I'll give you the grand tour and we can play some games or something too. Truthfully I've never done one of these with someone I'm actually close to. I've stayed at my idol co-workers places for trips but it's not really the same y'know?" The blond is practically beaming at him and Subaru just huffs, "Yeah whatever, I'll come like I said."
Kou smiled and forced a hug on Subaru, catching him off guard. "Yay~! This will be fun." Subaru can't help but think Kou's smile is nice, not that he'll tell him that. He brushed the other off. "Yeah... sure."
Subaru went home and asked Shu for advice on what to do or bring but he wasn't much help and it had amounted to "Will Yuma be there?" and Subaru just shot back "Well yeah...? he fucking lives there too?" to which Shu just answered with a brief "mhm".
The day of the dreaded sleepover came and Subaru was waiting like he was asked to outside the school gate when he spots Kou leaving behind his clique of fangirls. "What?! You told me to wait for you."
Kou just smiled. "I thought you'd try and bail out on our plans honestly! So I'm just surprised I guess?"
"Shut up!! I'm going through all this trouble to hang out with you!" Subaru then followed Kou to the Mukami limousine.
"Your brothers aren't... here right?" He asks a bit worried even if they know they're friends he thinks it's embarrassing.
"Ah? Just Azusa. Ruki and Yuma went home earlier. So just him and us!" That's fine Subaru could handle that (probably) he remembers Azusa being a bit weird but his own brothers are a bit weird so he can't judge too much.
"Ah... hello... you'll be staying over tonight, yeah? Kou's been talking about it since last night.... I hope you both have fun." Subaru doesn't know what to really make of that. "You talk about me?" He adds really without thinking. "Hm? Yeah? You're my best friend~!" and he goes on for a bit but Subaru doesn't get it cause he's brushed Kou off at almost every opportunity but he supposes Kou is that kind of guy to force his way into a friendship with you. "I am...?"
"Jeez! You're so mean, Subaru, of course you are." He's not really upset. Subaru can tell. He's the kind to brush it off anyway. Subaru guesses they are friends in the end. He wouldn't be coming over to Kou's house if not.
Subaru zones out the rest of the ride.
"We're here! Follow me, this way," and like that Kou is leading him throughout the Mukami manor. "and this is my room."
"I was expecting more pink," Subaru states as he takes in Kou's room. "Ah yeah, Ruki makes me keep it a certain way. I want to change it up but I tend to not always keep it super clean and they get mad at me. But I'm a busy idol! Who has time for that?!" Subaru can kind of relate but he doesn't think not keeping a room tidy and punching holes in your room constantly is the same so he doesn't say anything.
He let's Kou talk about his idol work though he doesn't entirely get it but Subaru is a better listener than a talker.
"Anyway! I'd love to see your room next time," Kou insists and on some level Subaru knows Kou will somehow force his way into that happening. "Maybe."
The two continued to talk well into the morning. When it finally comes time for the sleep portion of the "slumber party" as Kou called it. Subaru feels awkward without his coffin. There's just too much space around him in this sleeping bag. Kou had already fallen asleep but Subaru found he couldn't. How is someone supposed to sleep like this.
Subaru is careful to not wake Kou up as he leaves the room and finds himself in the Mukami's kitchen. Subaru thinks to himself that a cupboard is not much different than the locker's at school and he sleeps in those just fine. First Subaru has to remove what's in them though as he carelessly tosses out the kitchenware and other cooking items that would surely send Reiji into a state of shock. Subaru crawls inside the cupboard and goes to sleep all the while leaving the pans and discarded kitchenware carelessly all over the floor.
The next morning Kou wakes up to see Subaru gone. He wonders if he chickened out and went home then he hears a knock on his door. "Kou. Go in the kitchen please." Ruki is usually awake first so maybe he saw Subaru leave? Either way he follows Ruki's suggestion. He sees the same sight that Ruki saw. Yuma stumbles in on the sight of the mess in the kitchen "Oi, why are all the pans and pots and shit on the floor?!" with Azusa filing in shortly after. "Maybe Subaru got hungry and forgot to put them back....?"
That's when the four of them hear snoring and Kou curiously opens the cupboard to discover the source is a sleeping Subaru.
Ruki snorts and while they'd have liked to tease Subaru about it, they leave it up to Kou. "Hey, hey! Good morning Subaru, wake up," Kou even so kindly kicks one of the pots on the floor which makes a loud clang and rouses the other from his peaceful slumber. "What do you want?!"
"Why are you sleeping in here? Jeez, Yui wasn't kidding you really do sleep in the oddest places," Kou says as he hums to himself at the sight of Subaru crawling out of the cupboard. Damn Yui for telling Kou that he sometimes slept in his locker.
"Shut up. Don't mention this to anyone you hear me?!" and Kou just laughs. "Only if we can hang out again, okay?" and like that Kou hung out with Subaru. Again. And again.... and again. To the point where Subaru just kind of accepted it. To the point where their friendship mingled into something more. Not that Subaru ever says anything when it does. Kou was the first to initiate it into something further, and Subaru can't say he really minds it.
Every now and then Kou still catches Subaru sleeping in odd places in the Mukami manor when he's not sleeping in his bed with him. Subaru was still adamant about liking sleeping in places that didn't feel like his coffin (cupboards, locker, etc). They weren't cozy enough to him, that's all.
Though, he doesn't mind too much when he's sharing Kou's bed and the latter is pressed against him or stroking his hair because that's cozy enough for him.
