Work Text:

lan wangji remembers the first moment his wei ying had come back to him. he never had any expectations of him. while he could be selfish in his own ways, he could never and would never force wei wuxian to stay. it wasn’t an easy decision and there were days where he would remember the years before wei wuxian was brought back. he would be inside the cold pools, that particular day his scars would hurt a lot more. he often wondered if it was psychological more than physical because nothing could ever be as hurtful as not having wei ying alive and well.

on that day, he had been out on a night hunt with the juniors. before his older brother got out of seclusion, a lot of the responsibilities of their sect fell on him. he needed to get out, even if it wasn’t to necessarily rest.

he was just about to retire for the evening, having eaten dinner with sizhui when he heard the sound of wei ying’s flute and their song. he didn’t drink, he doesn’t, not unless wei ying asks him sweetly, so that night, he was certain he wasn’t drunk or imagining things.

i knew you’d be here lan zhan, i’ve missed you

wei ying

i’m sorry for leaving you.. for making you wait for me, again

i would wait lifetimes

he meant every word. lan wangji had been devoted to wei wuxian his entire life, ever since the first time he laid eyes on him. only in his dreams did wei ying return those feelings, he just didn’t know it would be just as intense.

“lan zhan, what are you thinking about?” wei ying asks, breaking him out his deep thoughts. he allowed himself to lose himself in his husband sometimes. it was his guilty pleasure that no one needed to know about.

“you baobei, always you” he said, fighting the urge to smile at the way wei ying spluttered and blushed, hiding his face in his hands. he knows that if they had been sitting next to each other, wei ying would hide himself in his robes. he missed them being close and got up to walk around their table.

“lan zhan?” wei ying asked but when he wrapped his arms around wei ying’s waist, he seemed to understand.

“silly lan zhan” wei ying giggled softly, “shall we go to bed?”

“mn” he agreed easily.
