Work Text:
“Do you believe the war will ever end?”
“Undoubtly.”
Somewhere high up on Liyuen mountains, two dragons sat with their backs against a large tree, so close their shoulders could touch. A star filled sky looked down upon them. It looked so peaceful up there to Retuo, he wondered if the Heavens were mocking them. War was raging around them, and had been for years and years. Yet now, if only just for a moment, there was calm.
“Although, there will always be conflict. This is simply how we work; humans, gods and others alike.” Morax spoke the words with such ease, but they hung heavy in the air. Retuo could only silently agree, despite his wishes for peace. This world is a harsh one, neither of them could deny this fact.
They had been seated like this for hours now, though few words were spoken. Dense silence filled the air, but Retuo did not mind; war was loud, so loud. The mysterious night sky allured him, filling his head with pleasant quietness.
A small sigh sounding next to him brought Retuo back to the present. Looking over, he found Morax in a similar manner as he was; thoughts in a far away place.
“Something weighs your mind.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. Retuo had always been good at reading Morax, too good.
Morax seemed to come down to earth again, his head quickly turning towards Retuo. He had to take a moment to think, but only sighed again in the end. “Correct.”
The sight of Morax’s face was always a pleasurable one to Retuo; it was the first thing he ever saw, and he hopes to continue seeing it for a long time. Anything that causes Morax pain is an enemy to Retuo. If only he could take away all worries in the world, he would without a doubt.
“Then, would you allow to me to share your burdens?” A rather deep question, yet Retuo meant every word of it.
Morax could not help but chuckle at his friend’s request. It was a lovely sound to Retuo’s ears, but he knew the God of Contracts was far from happy.
“Let us not speak of unkind subjects on this pleasant night.”
Even though Morax insisted, Retuo felt there was more to it. He did not wish to impose though, so the dragon left it at that. “You’re right. We should be enjoying this brief moment of peace.”
For now, that was enough for the two. Retuo moved a bit closer to Morax, hoping to show some support through this action. Their knees were now touching, neither of them mind. The soft chirping of birds brought a small amount of peace to Retuo’s mind, their lovely yet quiet songs filling his ears. He hopes that, one day, him and Morax could sit like this again. Free, peaceful and happy. No war to worry about, only each other to cherish. He wants to smile at the thought, but deep down Retuo knows it is an unlikely scenario; erosion is tugging at his soul, waiting for the day it could finally claim him. Every second he can feel it, like more and more cracks forming on his steady body and mind, making it so fragile it can break any moment. Retuo also knows this is Morax’s fate as well, though erosion may take him later. He can only pray for more time.
Time. Yes, that is what they need.
Yet, there is nothing they can do. What a cruel world.
A newly added weight on his body pulls Retuo from his thoughts. Looking down, he sees Morax has put his head to rest on Retuo’s shoulder. A small smile forms on his face. Just for a moment, they can stay like this.
