When It Was Just the Two of Us

Summary:

Back before the world changed, Lumera was all that mattered in the world to Ève.

Notes:

This was actually supposed to be nsfw, but it fit better as a sfw fic. There's something about these two. Probably that they're MILFs. But you know, it's something. There's also spoilers for the beginning of the game.

Work Text:

A long time ago, before her passing, Queen Lumera was very selective about who she invited to the Somniel. She lived there with her retainers, the stewards of the Divine Dragon. Before Clanne and Framme were born, however, there was Ève. At the time, she was the recently crowned queen of Firene, unsure of herself but sure of her goals. She wanted to bring peace to the world so that everyone could live without strife or conflict. That was a goal they both shared, as Lumera had been helping to keep the peace for nearly a thousand years. They were both queens with the desire for a world without war. There was also one other little thing that they had in common: they were hopelessly attracted to each other.

It started the day the two women first laid eyes on each other. Lumera had come down from the Somniel to visit Firene for the new queen's coronation. Everyone's eyes were on Ève at that time, so it wasn't as if her gaze was anything special. She felt an instant attraction the moment Ève entered the room, however. Her luxurious blonde hair flowing down her back, her white dress tickling her ankles, and the nervous smile on her face. It was all so beautiful, so precious. She was like a priceless piece of jewelry that Lumera wanted to polish until it shined in the sun.

Those same feelings ended up bubbling within Ève the moment Queen Lumera came to introduce herself. She congratulated Ève on her new position, but she was barely able to listen to the words coming from those beautiful lips. Her eyes were eagerly tracing every inch of Lumera's body, committing it to memory as if she'd never see it again. The same things Lumera thought about Ève could be flipped right back around on her. Her own hair was long, though it was blue instead of blonde. Her dress was white as well, though it touched the floor completely. However, her smile wasn't nervous: it was godly, and it was pure. Ève wanted to see that smile forever.

The two queens grew closer over the months as they shared their stories with each other. They would sit at the Firene coast and watch the ships sail out to Solm, chatting about queendoms and emblem rings. Ève would listen in awe as Lumera regaled her with tales of battle and glory with the emblems at her side. While her own life wasn't nearly as exciting, Lumera still listened with great interest at the day to day going ons within Firene. Even the most mundane of tasks were taken into her memory with great care. It made talking to her so easy for Ève, and she couldn't help but fall further in love.

When she got the invitation to the Somniel, she could scarcely believe it. She knew that the other kings and queens weren't extended the same invitation, so she knew it had to be a special occasion. Her heart fluttered at the thought that her own feelings were being reciprocated, but she tried her best to temper expectations. Even so, she was barely able to keep still as Lumera came down and took her to the great island in the sky. They held hands as they ascended, and even if it wasn't necessary, Ève was glad for it. Her hand felt warm in Lumera's.

After that first time, where Lumera showed her around the entire island, they spent a lot of time there together. Perhaps too much time, as she had a queendom to run, but she was young and smitten, so being with Lumera felt like the most important thing in the world. They would sit on the edge of Lookout Point for hours, sometimes in complete, comfortable silence. It was a nice spot to listen to the breeze and just be in each other's company. Neither of them had said anything to take things to the next level, but it didn't feel like either of them needed to. There was unspoken knowledge that there was something special between the two of them.

Any lingering doubt Ève may have had was dispelled the day they finally shared a kiss. It was the middle of the day, and the two queens were sitting by the pool. They were in their bathing suits, their feet dipped in the water. Ève did her best to politely not stare, but it was hard when her crush was sitting there in the most revealing outfit she'd ever worn. Her body was a sight for sore eyes: an oasis deep in the deserts of Solm. No matter how hard she tried, she always ended up drinking in that gorgeous figure whenever her traitorous eyes looked Lumera's way.

On that day, she happened to look at Lumera, only to find that Lumera was staring right back at her. A light blush came to her cheeks, and Lumera laughed, an airy, dainty laugh that made her heart do a series of frontflips. Then before she knew what was happening, Lumera had leaned in and planted her soft lips against her own. Her eyes went wide as Lumera pulled back, a smile on her face. Maybe it was the light blush on her own cheeks that did it for Ève, but she threw herself forward without thinking about it, arms around Lumera as she captured her lips in a deeper, longer kiss.

They spent that day at the pool just exploring each other's lips, sharing kisses and laughs like two women in a fresh relationship. Of course, later that night they did more than just explore each other's lips. Lying in the queen's bed, Ève could only stare at the ceiling, unable to believe her good fortune. She turned on her side beneath the covers, smiling as she watched Lumera sleep for a little. Even while asleep, she was perfect. Ève knew the truth then more than at any other time in her life: she was in love with Lumera.

Their trust went beyond the bedroom, beyond the sacred emblems they kept safe. That was the day Lumera took Ève into the bedroom of her child. The child of the Divine Dragon had been asleep for nearly a thousand years, and they still laid in bed, unable to wake from whatever dark dream they were under. Lumera got down on her knees at the side of the bed and clasped her hands together. Even as an all-powerful deity, she could do nothing for her poor child, so she silently grieved and she silently prayed. Ève could only guess at the pain Lumera felt every day: the pain she would hide from the world, a pain that now she was the only one privy to. So she got down on her knees as well, and she prayed for the child to someday wake from their slumber and grace their mother's arms once again.

Sometimes it felt like they would be together as long as Ève lived, but unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. Firene needed an heir, and the queen had not yet produced one. The bloodline could not die with her, or there would be chaos in the land she strove so fervently to bring peace to. It was with the heaviest of hearts when she spoke her mind to Lumera. For the first time since she was a girl, she cried, crying tears of bitterness and loss in front of the other queen.

Lumera understood: she always did. She would always smile, no matter what was to happen. However, the same hurt that burned in Ève's eyes, she saw it reflected in Lumera's. Her heart broke that day she left the Somniel for the final time, and it never truly recovered. She ended up marrying someone and having children with them. Prince Alfred would someday take the throne, and the lineage of the queen had been saved. At what cost, though? The meetings between the two queens had stopped, and the story of their lives had the most tragic of endings. The two erstwhile lovers never saw each other again.

The day came when the new Divine Dragon came to the queendom of Firene. Their appearance surprised and delighted Ève, as she knew how wonderful their awakening would be for Lumera. However, that joy turned to unfathomable sadness upon learning the truth: Queen Lumera was dead. She was dead, and Ève would never get to see her again. Though she was able to hold it together until her children left with Alear to try and stop the Fell Dragon's reawakening, she fell to her knees the moment they were gone. Alone with nothing but her miserable thoughts, she held her head in her hands and cried salty, bitter tears of regret.

She didn't regret having her children. That was something she would never regret. If only it could've worked out between her and Lumera, however. Somehow, someway... But perhaps they were always meant to be star-crossed lovers. A queen and a queen, so close yet so far apart. So she cried for the death of a woman she loved, and she cried for the love that could have been. Then she had to get up and dust herself off, wipe the tears from her eyes. She still had a queendom to run and a fell dragon to stop.

That didn't stop her mourning, though. Every day until the day she died, she still wore the memories of her time with Lumera on her heart. It was all she had left of the woman she once loved.
