Work Text:
Once upon a time, a lazy farmer owned a piece of land in a world where magic was real.
In this world with magic, magicians could make miracles happen. As long as they put their mind to it, there was nothing a magician couldn't create.
But, the magicians didn't do their work for free, so people that couldn't afford to pay a magician went on with their lives doing it the old-fashioned way.
One of the groups of people who lived life the old-fashioned way, were the farmers. The farmers who grew their plants by planting seeds by hand and watering their crops one bucket at a time.
As was tradition, all the farmers who were done with working on the land were enjoying spending their free time in town. But, the lazy farmer was also there, and the lazy farmer was not done at all.
The other farmers talked to each other about how their crops were nicely watered and how the plants had already started to grow, but the lazy farmer had only just put the seeds in the ground yet was already relaxing.
Then one day, a proud magician came into town. A magician who asked a lot of money for their creations, because the proud magician could make everything except money.
When the proud magician showed off their magic, everyone in town "Ooh"ed and "Aaw"ed at the pretty lights of magic colouring the sky. Everyone except the lazy farmer. The lazy farmer who had only scoffed and said they had seen better.
After the fifth time that the lazy farmer was not impressed, the proud magician came up to them in a huff.
"How could you have ever seen anything better? No one in this town but me can do magic!"
The lazy farmer only sighed and looked as if the proud magician had disappointed them.
"Clearly you have not seen nature doing its work, but that is to be expected because I work on the land and you don’t. Your tricks of light cannot compare to the wonders of nature."
When hearing this the proud magician got frustrated.
"Well I'll show you how nature cannot compare to my brilliant displays of magic!"
On the land that was still not watered and where the plants had yet to start growing, the lazy farmer started their tale of lies.
"Nature is able to water these fields within 5 days, your tricks cannot compare."
With arms stretched in front and a determined look on their face, the proud magician stated for all the world to hear.
"I can do better!"
Pulling their arms back, water could be heard in the distance. Starting from the furthest part of the fields, a wave of water built. The wave became bigger and bigger and bigger till the wave got so big that it blocked out the sun!
In one huge "Swoosh" the fields were watered.
The lazy farmer looked at their land and tried not to smile.
"I see you are indeed better at working with water than nature. Still, everyone can play with water. The one thing only nature can do is let plants grow."
Stretching their arms to the ground and squinting their eyes in concentration, the proud magician shouted once more.
"I can do better!"
Pulling their arms up, a rumble could be heard from underground. The rumble became louder and louder and louder till all of a sudden, plants shot out of the ground!
The crops grew bigger and greener till every piece of land was covered in green.
The lazy farmer looked at their land and finally showed a big smile.
Applauding the proud magician for their work, the farmer admitted what the magician wanted to hear.
"Never have I seen plants grow so fast! Your magic is indeed better than nature."
The proud magician, happy to hear that they were right, left the field with a pep in their steps.
The lazy farmer, having the most beautiful plot of land without needing to do any work, went back to town as happy as can be.
