Summary:

Guide to all things Omegaverse for both experienced + new writers alike to the popular AU/trope

Notes:

I'll possibly occasionally update this if I ever think of new stuff that I think should be mentioned

The Basics

 

so there are three different secondary genders that everyone is born with (unless you write an AU where this isn't the case) that dictate character's dispositions but… really the only ones people (usually) care about are alpha + omega

 

  • Alphas 
    • normally dominate
    • usually have personalities with loud, abrasive, or confident qualities, protective 
  • Omegas 
    • normally submissive 
    • usually have personalities that are more soft-spoken or shy, motherly + eager to please
  • Betas 
    • in earlier omegaverse works betas just appear to be regular ass people
    • honorable mention for betas sometimes actually having a use in society by basically being the one who makes alphas + omegas chill tf out
    • Recently seen betas act as a third in relationships to fulfill the A/B/O obvious shipping slashes 

 

in omegaverse each character + person has a unique scent to them that is usually a combination of two or more scents or like one very complex scent

 

examples of scents I've used: 

  • stormy oceanfront
  • parchment, ink, + plums
  • meadow filled with strawberries

 

Typically people give alphas muskier/heavier scents (smoke, wood, etc.) and omegas sweeter/lighter scents (flowers, fruit, etc.) with betas varying from no scent to having more neutral scents or even mixes of typical alpha/omega scent notes



 

 

Tropes that are (usually) consistent 

 

  • heats/ruts
    • naturally, without outside influence, omegas go into heat every [choose whatever time length you want I usually do once a month] and alphas go into rut every [insert time here, I usually do every three months]
    • heats/ruts tend to be described as being very feverish + very very horny and often times omegas will straight up be super sweaty and hot for as long as they are without a mate to assist them through their heat
    • Some fics write that omegas can die if not fucked during their heat
    • alphas in rut tend to be very territorial, protective, + aggressive (on top of horny)
    • regardless of secondary gender, heats/ruts mess with the judgment abilities of omegas/alphas so oftentimes they'll either cave and fuck the first thing that tempts them enough
    • It is also common for their to be toys specifically made to assist omegas/alphas through their respective heats/ruts
    • additionally, the scent of an omega's heat can send an alpha into rut and vice versa

 

  • scent glands
    • scent glands are typically in the inner wrists + on each side of your neck
    • sometimes people include extra glands on inner thighs 

 

  • Slick
    • when omegas are aroused they produce "slick" which is ig like any other slick discharge or etc. some women/coochie-owners have when aroused
    • when omegas are in heat the slick production kicks up a lot and is (often) described as quite literally soaking through clothing and etc.
    • varying per writer: this is either exclusive to omegas with coochies OR male omegas without a coochie will also produce this from their ass

 

  • Knots
    • knots are exclusive to alphas with dicks like literally just think of how dogs have knots while breeding and boom
    • per writer discretion, sometimes knots will only happen when: 
      • an alpha is in rut and/or mating with an omega in heat 
      • with "true mates" (which we'll go over in fluctuating tropes)
      • every time they cum/get close to cumming regardless

 

  • Nesting
    • when omegas are about to go into heat they will build a "nest" out of blankets, pillows, clothing, and etc. Usually, items are scented by both themselves + their alpha's/mate's scent because it's most comforting to them.
    • sometimes this is either something that only happens during heats OR there's always a dedicated nest set up where the omega can relax and unwind when stressed/sad or possibly sleep in (in place of a bed)

 

  • scent blockers/patches
    • this used to be uncommon but now it's not
    • think of a nicotine patch or those big band-aids but they put them over their scent glands to hide/eliminate their scent
      • feel free to get creative with it tho because it could also be in the form of a gel/paste applied to the glands or a shot (get funky with it I’ll eat it all up)
      • especially useful for omegas that are about to enter their heat since alphas can smell it on them and they don't want to accidentally endanger themselves by putting an alpha into rut
    • there are also sometimes scent neutralizers that are pumped into the air systems of places like schools, office buildings, hospitals, etc. (but I'm sure you could use them in homes as well) that completely eliminate the scent of anyone inside to avoid potential conflicts or tripping any heats/ruts

 

  • Suppressants
    • jumping off of scent blockers, a lot of people also like to write about the usage of suppressants (typically for heats but I'm sure this could also be used for ruts as well)
    • Suppressants "suppress" heats for an omega so they can still function within their society and do their jobs while in heats 
      • think of it kind of like birth control I suppose?
    • Some people also include negative effects from long-term use which can have several drawbacks, most common ones I've read being:
      • infertility
      • death
      • general sickness (vomiting, headaches, etc.)
      • suppressants no longer working

 

  • Pheromones
    • this concept has kinda been interwoven in a few of these things + back to the scent thing
    • basically, others can judge your mood based on your scent so they can tell when you're upset, happy, afraid, horny, etc.

 

  • claiming/mating bites
    • you bite the scent gland on the neck to claim your partner ain't that nifty + hot

 

  • Scenting
    • you scent them by either giving them items that smell like you OR rubbing your scent glands over theirs so they smell like you
    • oftentimes intimate between non-related peeps and acts as a territorial/claiming thing

 

 

 

 

other common/fluctuating tropes; varies per writer

 

  • omega rights
    • sometimes omegas have little to no rights or they are, at the very least, discriminated against for being the "weaker" ones or for breeding or etc.
    • Other writers flip this concept on its head and treat omegas as special/sacred compared to the rest of society
    • As an additional note, this often goes hand-in-hand with alphas near the top of society’s hierarchy 

 

  • Genitalia (male/female referring to sex, not gender)
    • option 1: all alphas have dicks, all omegas have coochies - regardless of primary sex
    • option 2: genitalia is based on primary sex
    • option 3: everyone has both parts
    • option 4: male alphas have dicks, female omegas have coochies, male omegas can have either, female alphas can have either
    • because I gotta honor the og: honorable mention for male omegas that still have dicks BUT they have some weird sort of ass vagina going on where they can get pregnant through their butt and birth babies that way but pls don't ask me for details because I hate this so very much (sorry m-preg enjoyers)

 

  • true mates
    • kinda like soulmates, usually has to do with some gut feeling + their scent smells like especially good to you or something + kinda varies per the writer what the "tell" is

 

  • inner omegas/alphas
    • I use this a lot but basically it's like an inner voice that isn't the character but is instead kinda like their baser instincts
    • example is when omegas smell an alpha's scent that really attracts them and there's some inner dialouge of "good strong alpha" "our alpha" etc. kinda hard to describe this one

 

  • alpha commands
    • idk alphas sometimes have the ability to like say certain commands with conviction and omegas find it very hard not to comply with these commands
      • sometimes this can be avoided by omegas that are claimed and/or not being able to hear/smell the alpha giving the command it honestly varies

 

  • mating bonds
    • varies once more but sometimes people write bonds, after mating bites happen, as creating a bond between an omega + alpha where they can feel each other's feelings, pain, hear each other's thoughts, etc. typical soulmate level shit ig
    • Sometimes permanent, othertimes not

 

  • pack dynamics
    • Not something I’m too intimately familiar with but a pack is oftentimes a friend group, a family, or a greater community
    • Sometimes includes pack hierarchies with one head alpha, head omega, etc. 
      • I’ve recently read a fic where pack enforcers, pack soldiers,  + den mothers exist so get funky with it
    • Sometimes include group scenting and other pack activities done together 
    • Can be chosen or born into, but also sometimes forced (depending on what you’re reading)
    • Sometimes accompanied by werewolf au

 

  • prime alphas/omegas (prime beta rights aka: the ultimate mom friend)
    • not too intimately familiar with this one either
    • they're cooler and more fertile; stronger
    • prime alphas can command other alphas, harder to resist, etc. basically crank regular alpha traits up to 10
    • prime omegas have a way harder time resisting ?? idk too much about prime omegas because usually it’s all about the prime alphas lol but they also tend to be more desirable
      • You can also crank regular omega traits up to a 10 ig

 

  • Changing Secondary Gender/Designation
    • this is one I've read quite a bit of recently and there's several ways of doing this but it's basically when say an alpha becomes a beta, alpha becomes an omega, etc. I think you get the idea
    • feel free to be creative af with this but if you like the idea of this but aren't sure how to do it here are some ways I've seen
      • people take medicine that changes their designations
        • anywhere from pills to medicinal drinks to shots
        • sometimes if usage stops the character will revert back to the original desigation
      • bitching which is basically alphas topping non-omegas (typically other alphas in my experience) and often transitions the alpha/beta into an omega
        • some people write this as an exclusive ability for prime alphas
      • naturally through pack dynamics
        • so say there are a lot of betas but no omegas: a few will naturally transition into omegas to fill the need
    • sometimes this process is painful but it doesn't have to be if you don't want it to

 

  • Animalistic Physical Traits
    • Typically I see this manifesting as having sharp canines 
    • sometimes long tongues (in honor of Rael's SeroShinKami comic w/Denki's tongue)
    • knots technically fit here too
    • I'm also pretty sure I've seen pointed ears in some artwork depicting omegaverse

 

As an ending note, omegaverse is super complex and diverse and feel free to go as crazy (or as tame) with it as you'd like and I hope this helps <33
